From what I can see those thingies you use to anchor the seat are called jubilee clips, I think. Cheers!

I normally use an adjustable piano seat. It works quit well for me. Of course the huge disadvantage, is that I depends of one, in case I dont carry my own, in fact it doesnt belong to me. Some people kind me saying that play lied. Great vids man, keep rocking.

I really like the idea of sitting on a low stool or chair. It would be great to not have to carry one as most venues would have a spare too.

Piano seats are too low for me...

Thank you for the review. I have the chrome version of the K&N. It is super heavy, as well as expensive. I also own the folding stool that you reviewed. The general concern that I have is how strong it is. I am a pretty good size man and I worry about the stool failing.

Yes, I agree about the folding stool. It doesn't quite feel robust enough.

Man, that's a _great_ review. I wish I had seen your review before I bought my stool. My solution: I play bass seated on a low stool, in approximately cello posture. I use a Roc-n-Soc Nitro Extended Throne. 24"-30", set at about 25 inches. These are quite heavy, about 16 lbs. I use the Xeros bass end pin strap but that turned out to be about 2 inches too short, so I had my local shoe shop to add a couple of inches of strap to it. A tent repair shop would be able to do this as well. There is no foot rest, so I use a guitar foot stool that weighs in at 1/2 lb for my left foot. Thanks Goeff!

The Roc-n-Soc stool is fairly expensive, ~$150 US.

A word of warning about welded stools. I added padding to an inexpensive steel folding stool for about 2 years. The welds broke and the stool collapsed. I was fortunate that neither I nor the bass were damaged. That's when I bought the heavier stool.

That's a great point David and I'm glad you and bass are ok.

Thanks David, great to hear you found it useful. I've also started experimenting with sitting at a lower height and I know Lauren loves that. I still sit higher on gigs, but I've enjoyed practising at a lower height with both feet on the floor. I use a stool I have for my desk that was cheap, but it's really comfy. www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/chairs-stools-benches/office-chairs/nilserik-standing-support-white-flackarp-green-art-00279568/

I'm starting back at the bass after years of not playing (due to not having one) and I have a half size that I am borrowing. Over the years my disabilities have worsened and so where I used to stand I now need to sit. It's lovely hearing that people sit in so many different positions. I'm working towards uni and was scared I wouldn't be taken seriously if not positioned "correctly". Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for the video. I had a wooden $20.00 bar stool cut to about 30" but it was so hard that I think I could have used bike padded shorts with it! These are a lot better.

Great review!! Like the idea of the hose clamps. Besides preventing slipping it also puts the stool at the same height all the time. I have this stool and really like it.

I've just bought a £15 black folding one from Argos (UK). It's not adjustable but if you're an average height it's a good value option!

@@DiscoverDoubleBass " Again a well plotted tutlary from the pedagogy Geoff Chalmers. I'm looking for a stool presently I do favor the the 3rd stool mentioned, the "Amadeus," I believe. Just don't want to spend a lot of funds, but a helpful stool would aid me due to an existing medical condition. Additionally I'm forced to think about back, support where I've had a laminectomy There are probably other searchers similar to myself returning to the large violin finding that this cognigzence proposes a patchydermatous challenge.

Presently on the search for a well back supporting stool to hold the elephant , presently looking for one, visiting luthier shops as I write this. Chalmers does a nice job of discipling both you & I and a host of orhers, "The string searchers, " whom are hungry for knowledge. I applaud you Mr. Harrison.

Thanks for this video. I have the one from K&N with the backrest and have had challenges finding the right height for playing. Thanks to this video, I now have it set at just over 27 inches and it works brilliantly. The K&N Stool is crazy expensive, but worth the price.

I've been using my sister in laws old bar stool but she move out recently and took it with. Time shell out and buy one I suppose. Thanks for the video Geoff.

...ahh that's not good. I recommend visiting sister and reclaiming it :-) I've got a couple of bass playing friends who still use stools they 'borrowed' from school.

Hehe. I could try getting it back but only at considerable risk to life and limb.

I bought an Ikea bar stool (Franklin). It is not very comfortable because the seat is made of wood, and not adjustable but quite cheap in comparison with specific double bass stools.

jubilee clips 👍 definitely pros and cons for all 3....I'd probably take the welded solid stool...I'd trade portability for stability personally. All 3 are great stools tho 👍👍👍

Thank you for this video regarding stools. At home I generally stand while playing, and I am not likely to play with community or university orchestras. So, I do not have much of a need for a stool.. I do own one of the folding stools that you reviewed. This morning I noticed a label on the bottom of the seat. It states the weight capacity of this stool which is 220 lbs, or 100 kg. That is not strong enough for my weight. I doubt that it would fail, but I just do not want to take the chance, especially on stage. I also own a K&R stool. It is sturdy, but a bit on the heavy side. Also, I am not real comfortable with the bicycle style seat. I would prefer a round one. Perhaps I can contact them and inquire about a round replacement seat. One last item to consider, especially with stools that have a fixed height is the size of your bass. I own a 7/8 Nick Lloyd bass and I have to make sure that the stool is high enough so that the bass itself does not contact the floor. That is especially so if your body is on the short side.
@DiscoverDoubleBass11 ай бұрын
I think that's a great point. A lot of the travel stools are not that sturdy. BTW, congrats on the 7/8ths Lloyd bass! I bet that's a cannon.
