I've run into this kind of thing (tough teams in wave 5) in CW maybe 10%-20% of the time. The "underpowered" teams, the ones with purples, have their team level jacked way up to compensate for the lower color level. This means skills that have a team level chance to fail shouldn't work. But at orange color levels, you can overpower them without the team level dependent skills.
