Nice job making commercial cages more suitable for degus! Your guys look super happy 😊It's great you put two cages together since degus need maximal horizontal running space as opposed to vertical climbing space (we all know they don't live in trees!). Just a friendly recommendation that I would sprinkle the treats around or give them to individuals quickly in succession instead of holding a pile for them fight over. Better to avoid this stressful situation and sprinkling them around has the added benefit of being fun enrichment as they have to forage ☺

I finally found this particular habitat, size 36" x 24" x 63" (91 x 61 x 160 cm) for my two degus. So far, they love it! They are running all over, playing and eating. I purchased a Giant 12" (30.5 cm) wheel, and that was the first thing they went for.

Every morning when I feed my girls one of them will sulk if she doesn't get her morning cuddles. I open the cage she jumps right out and snuggles into my neck whilst I get the food ready for them. They are rescued and I have 3 amazing girls. 2 of them are so so shy the run and hide but they have made huge progress. The one that loves cuddles she was super aggressive at first and would pretty much hiss at her if go near the cage. Its taken 5 months to get this far, may not seen like much to some people but they this is huge progress in my eyes

One of my degus loves snuggling, if he dosen't get his mornings scratches he can be really mad at you in the morning haha. Did you bought all six at once (i thought it was six in there but might be wrong) or did u buy a few at time? If so was it hard for you to introduce them to eachother? The one thing I'm learning? Do your research, such as watching videos like this, before purchasing any small 'rodent' animal. Don't listen to pet stores employees, unless they themselves have or had these pets at home; they'll tell you ANYTHING to sell you stuff! Many don't think about the fact that these are live animals and they need proper care. I purchased two degus around Christmas time for my child and I'm realizing that I purchased the wrong habitat for them. My dumbass listened to the pet store employees. And I can't return it. Either I need to add a 35" x 18.25 x 24" high-rise to it (which I'm having a hard time finding) or purchase a brand new habitat, such as the one in the video (if I can find it). I've had gerbils, hamsters, and dwarf hamsters. I was very successful in how I cared for them and they lived a long time. These degus are a completely different ballgame! Not only are they runners, they are jumpers and successful climbers. Thank God I have a stairwell that they can run up and down on, until I can get a better habitat for them.

Sorry for such a late response, but those mats are called shaggy bath mats and you can find them on the internet on eBay or find them in Ikea. It takes me legit 3 hours to deep clean the entire cage, but I only do that once every 3 weeks. I spot clean the cage every other day 🙃

How many degus do you have
@fishfossils88585 жыл бұрын
Few things First you're using the wrong type of bedding, you should use grass or hay, they like to chew on it and the shredded wood can give them bumble foot Second use pretzel treats it allows you to give them more if you like because they make those much lower in sugar content (or from what my experience is) Third this was a great video and that's an awesome cage
@fearlesspinata38825 жыл бұрын
The bedding is soft aspen which is not known to cause bumble foot - I do agree that straw and hay are good alternatives. My degus ages range from 8years to 6months, and they all have very healthy feet. I do weekly (if not more often) health checks on all my degus.

Hi! Heres some things I would recommend putting it: A dig box. This can just be a small storage box filled with hay or bedding. Have 2 wheels so they can both run. Provide lots of chew toys and huts Sorry it's not much, but good luck with your babies!! :)
@deguskatzentipps72594 жыл бұрын
Hi iijxss, here are my tips: • don't give them fruits to eat ( Degus can get diabetes quickly ). • They really like to eat hay and herbs (no pellets). The favorite food mix of my degus is this: deguladen.de/degus-familienschmaus-771.html?c=437&number=80040010 • Degus need a stone where they can short their claws • don't touch their tails too hard. My degu Twix had to have a surgery to remove the half of her tail because I accidentally slighty stepped on it. • don't give them a lot of cereals (makes them fat) or fatty treats. My degus are getting oilseeds instead which are more healthy for them. I hope this is of help. Best regards ♥️

I’m not sure if you mentioned they need to be in pairs? I’ve never met a Degu fine on its own. I work in a small pet “ shop “ and we have two Degus. Sadly our small breeder paired a female and male so they keep breeding and breeding - we are wanting to neuter and spay or either or. We always paid the babies up, so far we haven’t had an odd number. We try to pair same genders. They get so attached they NEED to be paired. If they can’t even see eachother on either side of the wheel they’ll scream and scream. Update- just saw you mentioned it xx This is the topic I can’t mention enough.

I think degus are one of those species that shouldn't have been domesticated at all , they were so happy there in their habitat in south America and we humans felt the need to have them as pets too , seems like nowadays there is no a single small mammal that is not possible to have it as a prisoner in our homes . I have a guinea pig , it's different though , guinea pigs have been domesticated by the incas for thousands of years , in fact they don't rely exist in nature . But Degu ... I don't see the appeal in having an animal so fast that would have been much happier free than in a cage
@The.MoNsTeRs Жыл бұрын
It’s because degus are at a really good starting point and can be semi easily integrated into a human made replica of their natural environment unlike fox’s, wolves, and tigers. With proper care humans can definitely keep domestic degus happy and healthy just like we do with Guinea pigs. It’s really nice to see people being more open to stopping the wild animal trade though! ❤️
@charg1nmalaz0r512 ай бұрын
To be fair in the wild they tend to die before they reach the age of 1 and in domesticated situations they live until 8. As long as the owner is aware of their space needs i am not entirely sure what you are complaining about
