*** Please read *** - March 28th 2024 Over the last weeks I've been getting more and more private text messages regarding James Cherry - unfortunately in negative ways. I understand that me and James are seemingly the only riders, who are talking about double posi soft boot carving techniques on KZbin in English, which, if it is true, doesn't mean at all that nobody else can explain it or that we're doing it well!!! - The fact that James and I had the talk we recorded and uploaded to our channels means nothing but sharing a passion for the same thing. I am asking my subscribers to look at me as an entirely different entity than James instead of throwing me into one bucket together with his attitude and opinions. His video called "End Of Season Rant" upset quite a few people. And then some of you actually got to listen to the first version of it on his forum carversconnection. I did, too! And I was left speechless.... It revealed a hurt, angry, mean, self righteous ego that is incapable of applying the badly needed nuance that the internet has eliminated, which has created so much division on all ends on all topics. _ So I'd like to make very clear that whether I share some of James's opinions or not, I do not share or like his approach to this entire softboot carving content! In fact I think he's contributing to the division between snowboarders of different kinds/stances/styles by keeping the unnecessary elitism alive that some older hardboot carvers have shown here and there over the years. I understand that the hardboot/double posi community got simply kicked out of the game by the snowboarding industry starting about 25 years ago with the withdrawal of sponsor money and gear, and that that community may well be upset about that. Without freestyle entirely taking over we could have seen a much better development of gear that caters more to turning/carving. It was basically put on hold within the mainstream for a solid 15 to 20 years. And snowboarding could have done with that diversity all along... But let's just be happy that it's all coming back and we're now at a stage in this sport where we're seeing a much broader variety of styles and gear than 10 years ago. And it's getting better, season after season! So leave that anger behind everyone and go for a few turns, slide down a rail or pop a 5 off a cat track.... It's all snowboarding!

Nonsense. Anybody who actually watched your videos knows that you never even hinted at that. For me it is a joy to watch someone share his knowledge in an honest way and that is exactly why i love your and Cherrys Chanel. You focus on a specific type of riding and really clear on why and how. No need to be butthurt about anything James ever said. So you just do what you do. 🙏😎

Looks brilliant. Keep doing what you’re doing James @cherrycarves, you’re an artist taking your speciality to a super refined level and personally I liked the bossy teacher approach, keeps my attention 😬. Only one thing I’d say, bear in mind that some of us have to fly to the snow so while I have a quiver I can only take two at most, and they have to do shitty snow, groomers, slush, ice, trees, moguls and whatever, so I gotta compromise on board choice!

Your advice and delivery style are second to none. You’ve given me loads of thoughts about how I’ve been riding and my set up and some great ideas that I want to try when I’m next back on the slopes. More than that, your detailed technical explanations on board set up are invaluable. So often either I’ve set my board up badly, or the shop have put the bindings on wrong, but following your videos after 30 years boarding I feel like I can confidently set my gear up for a range of conditions. As for the “snowboarding community”, as someone in their late 50s I’ve refined my superpower of not caring too much what others think. Keep up the fantastic work, I and many more love watching your videos. As you said, it’s all about fun.

Well…..that gentleman did not listen attentively. You are always saying that their is many different way to ride and many different set-ups, and that posi/posi is not always the best in certain conditions (you even talk about it with Malcom Moore) . So please, let’s relax, it is only snowboarding, even if we love it ! This gentleman should watch some older videos of Craig Kelly riding …..their is some learning there. Also, I totally agree with your observations working in the industry, their is very few people riding switch more that 10% of the time ! Finally, I really think that you are a fantastic ambassador for your sport and for Stranda by your demeanor, your enthusiasm, your respectful dialogue, your knowledge and your fabulous riding. Whoa... That's intense. Ya sure I was trash talking, but it was all meant in good fun. People shouldn't take me so seriously, I'm just a snowboarder... The truth is that I have love and respect for carvers in all genres and all stances: soft or hard boots, duck or posi-posi, Knapton style or skwal style, I don't discriminate. I'm the guy who will chase you down if I see you carving a snowboard, I'll offer tips if you're struggling and let you try my board if you're goofy! I have made so many great friends through snowboarding and especially carving. I'm a member in good standing of the old school hard booting community in North America, I've been to so many events and helped countless people with their stance, equipment and technique, just as I received help from this community when I was starting out. I'm working even now to bring knowledge and gear to carvers everywhere, trying to grow the sport and save people the years of work and research I had to do to figure this stuff out. If people want to dismiss all that and focus solely on two short sentences in a video introduction, that's on them, but don't cast me as a hater. That's would be a mistake. Let me acknowledge too that there many, many tens of thousands of snowboarders who can do all kinds of things on a board that I will never do, and I want to say I have the utmost respect for their style(s). I only have two tricks myself: toeside and heelside. I'm trying to teach those tricks to people who are interested to learn. The rest is just hype. There's enough divisiveness in this world; let's all just be snowboarders.

I've learnt so much from what you've shared and I have no doubt others have too. There are very few other snowboarding content producers who go in to the technical detail that you do, and there is a huge community that enjoys that level of detail. Being a middle aged rider, I also have no interest in freestyle or switch, so my fun comes from hunting powder off piste when the opportunity presents, or otherwise trying to continually improve my carving ability and that satisfying feeling you get from it whilst on the piste.

We all share the mountains, and we do it in our own ways. I look out for anyone with skills when I’m on the chairlift, I love watching good skiers carve, I love watching boarders with skills I’ll never have whatever their style… I skied before I boarded and I wasn’t much good at it, I learnt to ride posi in the 90s and then went duck, and I couldn’t get that to work for me, but I’m a big fan of Malcolm’s channel just as I’ve watched loads of Knapton vids and learned a lot from those too even though I couldn’t dream of riding like that, but I’m just glad to see people doing stuff about this way of riding and helping me ride the way that I like best. And we’re all just as diverse in the way we come across,say things that maybe we could have said another way, maybe dry humoured remarks get interpreted differently and so on, but it’s clear to me at least that you guys are just talking about how to do it the way YOU like to do it, and sharing that experience with the rest of us who love snowboarding in whatever flavour. I’m 60 now, seen a lot of tribal stuff on the snow, had to defend my choice of planks sometimes but it’s live and let live, there’s much more acceptance and I don’t have time for divisiveness on the slopes any more, I ride with skiers mostly and we’ve all just got to get along and be nice to each other whatever style we choose to follow. Personally in your livestream I thought you were both extremely respectful of different styles and exponents. Keep it up!

In any of your videos there's nothing from there that I took as ridiculing duck stance. My main take away is that riding posi-posi makes it easier to move the torso fore and aft and that movement helps with carving. How the rider achieves that fore and aft movement over the board - whether it's posi-posi or duck, is up to them. Again, I would like to thank your input and insight into the technical details of carving and snowboarding in general. It really helps the community to be provided the tools to achieve their riding style. I come from the sport of rock climbing where a route or problem can be climbed in endless ways depending on the climbers' body type and preferences. They have all these different techniques they can use to climb to the top. As you said, it's the same with carving - there are so many different ways to carve.

You and James Cherry convinced me to try posi/posi and, in just 3 or 4 days of riding, I've made more carving progress than in 7 seasons of duck. Your explanations were well formed and required the viewer to simply give this stance a try. I thought I was laying trenches with duck, but double posi really made the board rail. Let the duck fanatics squeal. You're not hating on them, you're just making the openminded riders better.

Joys of the modern world and the game of 'who can be the most offended' of social media. Many moons ago when i started snowboarding it was all posi/posi riding and i rode for years with duck stance but cant now as nearing 60 with shot knees, its all about riding with minimal knee pain. It great now to see you and others speaking about posi/posi riding and showing younger people there are more options on snowboard setup and ways to ride. At a base level, its all about having fun and enjoying yourself riding down a mountain.

The best part about snowboarding is that as much as it’s a sport that requires certain general techniques, it’s also very much an art form. Everybody’s body work different and there are also individual preferences, like stances, and that’s what gives everybody their own style. The best thing to do is watch videos from the experts like Lars and John, among many others who put this amazing and invaluable content like this up for free, and take in as much as you can and try to visualize doing it yourself, and then experiment and practice with these different things until you find what works best for you. Don’t try to exactly copy somebody’s style, but most importantly, don’t be close-minded and think that what you do is the end all be all and that everybody should follow everything they do. If they get butthurt because somebody else does it differently and can take a light hearted joke, then they’re not a snowboarder at heart.

One could choose to ride posi posi one day for carving hard packed snow, and ride ducky for bumpy slush. There's no right or wrong between the two, they just serve different purposes slightly better or worse. The end goal is that all of us snowboarders can challenge ourselves and enjoy the sport. I didn't watch many of your videos but I do feel the valuable contribution you're making. Don't give a s*** about those small minds.

Lars, I loved that talk with you and James. I think James has a certain kind of sense of humor that some people just do not get. Of course, James likes powder days. I believe that he has talked about them or written about them (in the comments section) on his channel. I have a Gentemstick Superfish which I am working on carving with. Totally different approach but James was able offer some insights on how to adapt his carving tips to riding a Japanese snow-surf style board in a reply to one of my comments. Good stuff. He is not close-minded at all. In fact, I like both of your approaches and take a little from each of your methodologies. Gosh - sorry you went through that - I think people are entitled to share their experiences, and be confident on what they felt they learned. It’s generally true that other people will have different experiences which might lead to dissonance, but it’s important to grow out of taking things too personally & allow for conflicting opinions. For me, watching your video inspired me to experiment with my riding stances. Personally I found that I found moving more positive lets me lock in the back knee to a more perpendicular plane to the snowboard, which reduces knee rotational stresses and makes a difference in my current circumstances.
@ericking9263
@ericking9263 10 ай бұрын
That has also been my experience. I’ve had a re-constructed and therefore less stable right (back) knee in my 20s. In fact, that’s one of the things that attracted me to snowboarding from skiing (less rotational stress on a knee). Double posi has always been my stance for everything out of necessity. I have friends that ride a light duck stance that are trying to get me to try it. I only ride directional and never in a park. It could be a benefit in trees but my knee isn’t comfortable twisted like that. We do what we can.

Hang in there...your videos have helped me. Being a little more Positive in both feet isn't mandatory for all riders, it just makes carving EASIER...I'm pretty flexible for my height and age, but If I had really excellent hip flexibility I could do it in duck stance too. But that's your point...it's just easier for most people. That's the lesson: Don't get caught by negative vibes...Keep everything( mentality and stance) as positive as possible!

Nice one! I think expressing aversion and being able to disagree as well as expressing negative emotions and what not is super important. We can't just suppress all that stuff... people would start killing each other in wild outbursts of all the stuff they've been holding back. It's all about the way we do it in! And instead of yelling out a big f-you some people need to learn to seek conversation. Being offended is a choice. I chose to let this get to me. He chose to let my content get to him. So we're both 'weak'. The difference is that I didn't actually speak to him and was very neutral in my video, while he spoke directly to me telling me off... Really, it's all good. :-) I figured this would be a good video to make, because the community is so split between stances... which is so silly!!

I love your videos and how you make suggestions instead of saying everything else is wrong. As long as it's fun is how I approach it... I love how snowboarding is something that everyone can do it differently but still accomplish the same goal. This is year number 34 on a snowboard, and I have spent much of that experimenting. I love that I can watch a lady in her 60s do picture perfect carves with a duck stance, where I do the same thing on a 183 GS board with hard boots. I have plate bindings on all of my regular boards, and my boots are as stiff as I can get with the power strap cranked down tight. I like the board to feel like I'm part of it. I even ride twins with a forward stance and the hard boots cranked to the max. I grew up needing that support, and now I have it. I also live for groomers but i love to get my 181 twin out at night when the hill is a lumpy choppy mess and pretend I'm surfing. My setup and style is completely the opposite of my best friend who I've been riding with for more than 30 years, but we still manage to have a blast.

This is not a snowboard community issue, this is just internet. People get offended about anything, let them be, it’s their problem. Thanks for your content, it’s great. On a wider picture, i think that one of the reasons for carving being back in trend, is simply that snowboarders are aging 😅 I am a 49 years old french rider, started snowboard as a teenager basically when the first boards became available. I have been more freestyle oriented for a long time, however with injuries, but also just time passing, my knees can’t really handle jumps anymore. I guess i am not the only one, snowboarder from the early days of the sport, turning back to more carving as a natural evolution. Even though carving is clearly very demanding, i think it’s obviously less brutal for the body than landing, or not!, a big jump or falling on a rail. I think there’s a generational thing here. Let kids spin in the park, while we carve the slopes, there’s plenty of fun available for everyone 😊

Looking around the slopes as a 3 year old since 1975, 99.99 percent of the skiers doing it the same way...facing their hips in the direction they're mostly riding. BUT riding SWITCH is not a problem... Riding powder... Not a problem... Riding park... Not a problem. I'm now really considering to mount one binding switch on the ski, to create the evolution of the duck stance... The "ballerina stance". Maybe this "punk approach" offers a whole new world to be different... Then giving me the possibility to diss the rest of the ski world. (ironic wishes from Germany)

whats your thoughts about jones free carver ? 9000 have you testet the board?
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel
@Justaride-Snowboard-Channel 9 ай бұрын
This is a slippery slope, because I am a Stranda ambassador but also simply a snowboarder with an opinion and experience... So anyone who reads this, please don't mistake this for bashing another brand!! I've ridden Jones for ten solid years before I found Stranda as a hardgoods buyer and simply fell in love... So... Freecarver.... I haven't ridden either one of them, so anything I say here is anyways to be taken with a grain of salt! However, I had a 6000 in for a tune up a few weeks ago, and it surprised me... The core thickness of the board is diminished between the bindings, and when you flex the board, it somewhat folds in the centre. It's quite soft in the middle. Pushing into the centre, the tips barely flex, while the centre folds... This is a flex pattern that allows effortless torsional twisting of the board through the feet when performing sliding turns. For carving - from everything I know and perceive on snow - this is entirely counterproductive. It's the tips that need to bend into a turn shape, and it's the centre that needs to maintain torsional stiffness to keep the board's turn shape through a turn. Torsionally soft boards are much more sensitive to bad grooming or rider imbalances... The unwanted twisting of the board in a carve changes the board's turn shape on snow - the line the edge draws into the snow! Since carving means that the tail follows the same path as the nose, this is obviously better with a torsionally stiffer board! So the Freecarver 6000 is clearly not that and IMO shouldn't be called a carver at all. The 9000 I haven't seen properly yet, and I'm not gonna make any assumptions. Watch my video on 'What makes a good carving board' here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYakmZWMg5ZngLssi=t7dcj3QLmJTpw1Vg Another thing I've experienced first hand at demo events with Stranda is people telling us "Wow, your Biru carves so much better than the Freecarver 6000" - although the Biru is an allmountain board and not meant to be a pure carver. Stranda and edge grip are a love affair! They simply figured it out - and that is why I moved away from Jones, which, don't get me wrong, always rode fantastically!! I do think, however, that the pressure of growth for an ever growing company like Jones forces the design team to cater more to the masses and prioritize 'easy to ride' over 'specific purpose for advanced riders'. But carving is advanced snowboarding, and why not make stuff on that level? I'd love to try both Freecarvers and I hope I'll get the chance at some point! That was a long answer.... :-)

I'm sorry you had to go through that kind of case. Sadly that's how internet tends to be. The interesting bit is that the techniques you and James teach are really game changers for duck stance carving as well. I've said the same thing in many comment sections but I'll say it here again. Rotation really is something that is missing many times when I see people carving duck stance but it can absolutely be applied to duck carving and that takes especially the heelside turn to the next level.

I was a breakdancer before I was a snowboard instructor and experienced similar in that community too. Interestingly, more so in the west, meanwhile Asia was pushing boundaries with their extremely supportive community. I notice a similar trend in the snowboard “mainstream” community (recently a flare up between TheButterDojo and AngrySnowboarder). On a brighter note, the replacement board I got from Rome, a Ravine Select 157, is my new favorite board. Does everything I need so well. Great all around board. Had 3 good days last week at 49° North. Went to Silver for first time today. Most of it was garbage. But we found lots of untracked powder on side and trees on chair 2. All feeds into speedy groomers. Quick laps but worth it. Friend had a super old k2 clicker setup. Boot came apart. I did a pro duct tape job. This is another pro for traditional bindings: security. Friday and Saturday I’ll be doing my first Splitboard touring over at Snoqualmie Pass. Baker was just too far for me. Should have good snow for next Tuesday/Wednesday at 49° or Silver. Going to Schweitzer 5th and 6th. Ikon pass gives me 4 days there. Plus the company that owns restaurant I work at, gives me $50 rooms and they have a hotel in Sandpoint, ID. The more you know, the more you know... ;-) Adapting to terrain is key, otherwise you become a one trick pony that can only ride in certain conditions. I used this occasion to 'defend' myself, but more so to point out that me and James have those different approaches for the same outcome, which I find amazing

Don't apologize when you've done nothing wrong. -Jordan B. Peterson I came to the content you and James provide because I want refine and improve my carving. I've been riding and carving duck stance for 30 years. You and James laid out the truth - it's done better in a positive positive stance. The science, anatomy and mechanics make that a fact. I never took it as it can't be done. Because of you two, I'm in search of a new setup and direction in the sport I love The negative exchange you had was not with a snowboarder... like you said - we're a community and love all aspects. Your exchange was with an insecure ego, who happens to own a snowboard and yes - carve. Plenty of people think the flat earth conspiracy is real....they are not worth your time arguing with, questioning and analyzing your own content, let alone apologizing to. If they're offended - that's their problem. Please continue to focus your time and energy on the content we all love and that you have been providing prior to this video.

Great comment!! Thanks! I agree with the JP quote. I don't think I'm apologetic here. It was more of an attempt to reflect on the fact that some people do take my content in a weird way and me making that public to state again that snowboarding has so many faces..... I also agree with the functionality aspect of carving and posi. The guys who are doing it extremely well in a duck stance (like that dude who challenged me to this whole thing here) are all very twisted in their heel turns, and I'm simply saying "If you don't ride switch much, why do this to yourself? Just ride an open position!" - But you know this already... :-) It's weird that the dude is a brand ambassador for a pretty highly regarded brand in the carving scene - soft and hard boot. It's just immaturity!

This guy must have not paid attention to your videos. On every occasion where you discuss posi posi you underline that you don't regard any stance to be any better than other, and that there are a multitude of approaches to snowboarding. Love your content, don't let guys like this get to you!
