Actually, to my understanding, Sonic3 doesn't have a battery in it. It instead saves with a very early version of flash memory. As for the extra save files, I'm not sure if that's because the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge has save memory of its own, or if the two extra files are deliberately locked away on the Sonic3 cart unless it's locked onto Sonic & Knuckles (considering Sonic3 was pretty much made with future connectivity in mind, S&K being split off from Sonic3 during development in order to meet a deadline, this would make sense).

Explanation: A top S&K on a bottom S&K causes the bottom to simply "pass through" the game, like a lot of incompatible titles that don't generate a No Way!. Great find! S&K also has no internal save data; that data is held on the Sonic 3 cart, separate from S3, explaining why your saves came up normal.

That is new content, by the way, since it couldn't have happened if Sonic 3 got released in one cart. Your claim that nothing in Sonic & Knuckles is new is invalid.

As a child the year 2000 i had the sega genesis carteidge add on and was able to play sonic and knuckles complete, i didnt even know what the big cartridge was for until randomly messing with the sega one day and putting sonic 3 on top of sonic and knuckles and it worked, i then put sonic 2 on top and was able to use knuckles in sonic 2, the good ole days

You're running the cart at the bottom regardless of how high you stack them. The way it works is that S&K maps the address space of the cart plugged into it after the S&K ROM mapping, and decides what to do. The game code is stored on the S&K cartridge, using static assets (levels, sprites, etc) from Sonic 1 or Sonic 3. Sonic 2 works a little differently - the S&K cart maps Sonic 2 into memory as with the other games, but then it patches the Sonic 2 region with a separate ROM on the S&K cartridge and jumps execution into the patched version of Sonic 2. It decides what to do by identifying the cart plugged into it - if it's anything other than Sonic 1, 2, or 3, then all it does is use the cart data to generate random 'blue spheres' stages.

If you put in sonic 1, you still get the no way blue spheres stages, but you can pick the stage manually, and if you put in sonic 3d blast, due to it also using tricks to get more memory than normally allowed, sonic and knuckles looks for the header halfway through the cartridge, fails to recognize anything, and then boots up sonic and knuckles alone.

Personal experience. When i was kid in 95, i had Sonic & knuckles for mega drive and Sonic 3 for Genesis, and a cartridge converter from NTSC to PAL. For many years i always Locked on 3 cartridges. S&K + Converter + S3. Many years later i found out that when plugging in S&K, the converter was useless, and i could stack on Just S3... But It wasn't the same for me... The feeling of having 3 cartridges one on top of the other was way too satisfying!!!
