Of all the videos you have produced about retaining walls, this series so far I have learned so much more. As a homeowner and DIYer I am planning on a small (20' long 2' - 2 1/2' high) retaining wall in the future. The girlfriend was impressed with the brick patio I did following what I learned from a video of yours posted 2 or 3 years ago. Thank YOU, Stanley "Dirt Monkey" Genadek For not only the entertainment but for the education. Edit: As a veteran, a big thanks goes out to Mrs "Dirt Monkey"

Why don’t you use filter fabric between the dirt and the 3/4 stone? Won’t it eventually mix over time?
@kirkswenson75664 жыл бұрын
Will Flynn I had the same question.
@JohnnyRocket544 жыл бұрын
I'm glad someone else was thinking the same thought I was having. Yes it will. Everyone should watch the demo with the glass jar that's completely 'full' of rock, then adding more pebbles until 'full', then adding more sand until 'full' again, and then adding water? All of the fines in the soil behind will eventually end up in settling in the stone backfill and the finish grade above will sink over time. But this won't happen until the home is sold many times and this project forgotten. Filter fabric would be $20 well spent for longevity.
@209Control4 жыл бұрын
I hope he sees your comment and gives feedback.
@Dreddy724 жыл бұрын
if i remember correctly, hes covered this detail before. i believe that they said they dont use the cloth because it tends to get clogged up first on its own, and prevents the water from getting through to the drainage, defeating the whole purpose. I dont know if any real testing has shown this, but this was based on real world repairs he had been doing in the past, so possible it was all just poor installation in the first place being very common in his area.

Great video on this project Stan! I have watched all of your retaining wall videos and you have convinced me that Versa Lock is the right blocks for the wall I need to build. My local distributor is telling me I need a vertical fabric between the undisturbed soil and the back fill gravel. This is intended to keep the gravel clear (we have heavy clay soil.) I know how adamant you are about fabric behind the wall but what about behind the gravel? Thanks and keep up the videos they are great!

The ground around Dallas Texas moves entirely too much for stone foundations. I repair those all Sumer long. Everything I do gets done in concrete if it’s intended to say. Tree rings and some flower beds get done with sand since tree roots will lift the wall out at some point.
@rodcampbell55074 жыл бұрын
Maybe try tying back the retaining wall for added strength every 3 feet in height. Just a simple use of plastic snow fence and 2x4' s hammered in and covered.
@TheWiseDaws4 жыл бұрын
Do you not need to have filter cloth between the aggregate and the dirt behind the wall that way the dirt doesn’t plug up the aggregate and prevent it from allowing water to flow through it?
@robertvannicolo44354 жыл бұрын
No never put fabric between the soil an the stone. Fabric holds water back will push wall over or at least bow it 12” clean stone only is needed
@JoeMaxFpv4 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree with other answer. I’ve been a mason for 26 years. Up north we use fabric to separate. Otherwise silt and clay contaminate the stone and it weeps through gaps and will constantly cover a patio making for a real pissed client. With all our snow and frost I have never had a wall bow or fall over using fabric. But I have replaced walls that leaned without it because of saturated mass. I always use stone and perf pipe with fabric to separate the drainage system. But what do I know. I went to Stockbridge for landscape architecture and hydrology. And have done over 1500 walls in 26 years.

Joe I had an experience with filter fabric on a wall had engineer from EP Henry come out and told me never use fabric because of the reasons I stated before 12" of clean stone done properly is sufficient just in last 6" of top stone I use fabric raping the top layer secured by the glued or cemented top cap that is why I don't use it anymore expensive lesson learned but everyone has there own opinions and experiences
