Historically Insignificant - Training Grounds
Today we will be exploring a couple of abandoned houses side by side. Both homes were built in the Tudor style in the 1920s. The first home was most recently used as a hair spa and massage therapy clinic. Its neighbour was used as an office for the Ontario firefighters union.
The properties were bought for redevelopment and the current proposal suggests the homes will be replaced by a 7-storey apartment building with 141 new rental units.

Absolutely loved the turquoise bathroom! Liked the work space table in the second house. Loved the stained glass window and the nice large kitchen. Overall I preferred the 2nd house but I did absolutely love the sunroom in the 1st house.

I believe the small furnace in the first house was for hot water radiators, rather than a boiler for steam radiators. Not uncommon in smaller houses in the states in the first half of the last century. Much less expensive to build and maintain than a boiler system. Wow, that bathroom in the second house! Love the concealed toothbrush holder. Was that leaded glass window in the kitchen a pass-through for serving, or just decorative?
@StaticSpaces
@StaticSpaces 4 ай бұрын
Interesting, I didn't know they had hot water furnaces, thought they were all steam. I am pretty sure the window was built in and didn't open. It may have actually been an exterior window originally before an addition was put on, but I'm not sure. Thank you very much for your comment!!

Wow! Nice homes. And of course slated for demolition. Boo! You just can't beat the look of natural wood. The trim and doors in the second house look so nice compared to the white painted woodwork of the first.

The first home with brick looks like the home I grew up in. Magic chef was an appliance brand I think started in 60's. I was taught in middle school cooking classes early 60's on a magic chef stove everything was centered around that brand all cookware even cookbook to promote brand. Cooking was done in a sponsored room in a building by magic chef

Not that it matters but what I meant was the cooking classes were in a building in our downtown that were extra classes outside of school we could take for extra credit

Couple of cool older homes. It would be so nice if more of these homes could be lovingly restored back to their beginning states. If that is impossible perhaps everything that could possibly be reused could be salvaged. Some of those really nice doors along with their cool for knobs and perhaps some stained glass windows or even stair railings. Would make more sense to me than wasting them. The painted over bathroom tile wasn’t all that great. The thought of seven stories of apartments replacing any homes is kind of repulsive, unpleasant to me. Guess I’m a bit opinionated on the subject. I’m glad there are explorers to share these once beautiful homes before they’re gone! Thanks James for sharing these two. And another thing I would want to salvage are those interesting wood beams in that sunroom. I’ve never seen nor imagined anything quite as unique! Thanks and see you next time!

Ya those painted tiles are horrible. As for the boxes in the sky, I'm not a fan at all either but maybe one day we will all have to live in them. But hopefully not. Glad you enjoyed it Karrie and thanks very much for your comment!!

Hey James, hope you had happy holidays. The second home you showed was my favorite. It’s sad that such nice large older well built homes days are over. I don’t know how to put it into words why it makes me feel sad, but it does somehow. Very interesting and just because I hate their days are over the damage was sad too. Thank you James for sharing these with us. Maybe it’s the weather we are having in the States is effecting my feeling sad for these beautiful older homes?

It seems to be split about 50/50 as to who likes which house better, I'm surprised. The weather here in Canada is no better right now, it's hard to stay positive in these dreary and or extremely cold days. Thank you very much for your comment Cee Cee!!
