from my HEMA experience, I find that when using shorter weapons against a longer ones, it is better to counter-strike. especially if you have two because you can defend and attack at the same time easier than with one weapon.

Yes, always. When I use an arming sword and buckler against a longsword, attack initiative is never mine. At most I bait the longsword user into a perceived counter so I can block with one hand and simultaneously counter with the other. Trying to hit first with shorter weapons, even if you have 2, rarely ever ends in your favour.

The Aoshi swords are actually referred to as "kodaichi" in the story. Today they are more often known as "chisa" or "ko-katana". Apart from that, I really appreciate this video. This is such an unexplored method of katana combat as far as I've known.
@brandon2559
@brandon2559 Жыл бұрын
It's kodachi. Kodachi and wakizashi are interchangable words for the most part in Japan. Chisa and kokatana are words mainly used outside of Japan. Depending what period you are looking at in Japanese history they had different length katana. Some samurai generations had pretty short katana. I forgot the name, but the era with the shortest katana never called it Chisa. I've never seen any evidence of any special category for short blade, long handle swords.
@infinitemartialist
@infinitemartialist Жыл бұрын
@@brandon2559 fair enough where history was concerned but in reference to the story coupled with current usage, ko-katana, chisa, and kodaichi are interchangeably meant to signify a very particular kind of katana. Namely one where the handle is that of a full size katana (10" or so) and a blade that is typically between 22-24". A "mid sized sword". Most wakizashi handles don't go past 8" in my experience and the blades usually hover around 18" if I remember right. So while history speaks its facts truthfully I'm sure, the word usage in today's katana market along with the Kenshin story signify different types of katana at pretty specific lengths. That is how I referenced it.

Yesss finally someone using Double Wakizashi. You see, dual wielding is very interesting, but is often overlooked, people tend to attribute Dual Wielding ONLY to let's say Rapier and Dagger, Katana and Wakizashi. But they never explore Dual Wakizashi, Dual Shortswords, which actually is effective in combat. If you are able to track your distance correctly, position yourself correctly, you know? since you have a disadvantage of range, and little to none parry power compared to Two Handed weapons like Longswords, Katana, etc. Dual Wielding is effective for a combination of multiple attacks at the same time, and defending and attacking simultaneously. Nice video as always, i love how diverse this channel is with the content!

I did notice that the dual wakizashis were often used only one at a time... but when used like in 4:08 and 5:03, as mentioned they can be scary deadly (one weapon deflecting and locking the longer blade just long enough to get *really* close and personal, where the wakizashis have the advantage). It would be interesting to see how this would play out if the dual wakizashi wielder was given more time to train with this fighting style. Or if they're all used to the katana rather than dual wakizashi, maybe they could try a friendly sparring match with other martial arts that *do* specialize with other weapons? Like perhaps arnis?
@Chris09978
@Chris09978 Жыл бұрын
Well ninjutsu does have that dual fighting style, also the dual wielding is a great thing but the samurais only used it if they’re in close quarters so like their home, supermarket l, or even at a bar. But however if they are in the street and such or woods they’ll use the katana. There are few historical documents of samurais duel wielding but it’s very very slim. The only one who used it were these samurais from 1584 - 13 June 1645, Shinmen Takezō, and Miyamoto Bennosuke , there the only ones who used duel wield techniques, both of them have won successful duels and multiple of them.

I am formal international sport fencer from Malaysia and my coach felt that I was a bit too bookish for Western fencing manuals so he gave me 5 Rings by Miyamoto Musashi (read over and over again forever) generally my only qualification answer your question is the Daimyo has not order me to commit sempukku for shaming bushido and its practitioners 😂 Anyway, Samurai’s favourite weapon is whatever his Lord requires him to weild. In South East Asia we forge the best metal weapon because our steel is good. Japanese steel - kinda bad so they do need to import but our people haven records the Japenese purchase huge amount of our long-rifles (lantaka) and blunderbuss (penawas) the also bought a lot of miniture handcannons of brass - they designed for two men or one man lighty armour to take out a full armored target (like the one Mulan used in the cartoon except is a cannon) The they had weapons all asians actually feared most for a sarrisa lance and hunting bow - both used on horse back. And if you want terror stories its actually most like the start of Last Samurai. Is how it goes down mobile and spread out maybe marshalling auxillaries and conscripts then at the call of their lord the will attack a single target like flying lawn mowers. After that they have a stilletto tanto to kill another samurai in full armor. And lastly you have their katana and wakishi. The katana isnt usually the weapon of last resort - there is no weapon of resort. There's just your target and orders. But if your orders were to say... The challenge to a duel to draw out his Lord/avenge a dishonor then yes. The samurai have like a gentlemen's coat room - they must deposit all weapons including the katana and display their wakizashi and proceed. So you only expect two-handed fighting out doors. Miyamoto Musashi says this early in 5 rings and I agree after 15+ years handed and two-handed are not decided by style or opponent but by intent: If you wish to kill dual wield one blade even a wakizashi. If you are to take prisoner(s) even if to ask their names only after then dual wield. And it's rather an explanation of why it's true. But it's really true for me with blunt weapons - one to kill, two to take them alive. A dual wakizashi is not something any one samurai would do. What might happen is say the Daimyo has a samurai family who live nearby to dispatch the local Lord by calling their honour to the bufuku. And this usually father-son and or two brothers and failure is not an option. And say the corner the Lord in his chambers and he is a open space stand at the door while the other two samurai are in the corridor halway. The father/elder might the other to pass his wakiszashi and the first will attack-contrattack and the second will slip into the room or just duel weild stab katana (what i would do, I would not take a positioning step instead of attack on the attack-contrattack beat with family member engaging the enemy)

Just me, but I see a lot of katana dual-wielding in media here and there, but I feel like short swords would be more effective since they don't have much weight and are lighter to maneuver around. In this case, wakizashi and/or kodachi, but also seen with butterfly swords from Wing Chun and bastons from Arnis and the such. As always, love your stuff and keep up the good work.
@penttikoivuniemi2146

Even more than the weight, the shorter length makes them easier to maneuver around each other. Although to be frank, katana are pretty short as well... In their case the long handle is probably the bigger issue than the length or weight of the blade.

I feel like if they put as much time into training with the 2 wakizashi as they do with the sword, this might have gone rather differently. Granted you do lose some reach, but, if you got good enough to be able to consistently block with one and attack with the other, the sword would lose its advantage soon enough, that ability to block and counter is huge
@podolsky6246
@podolsky6246 Жыл бұрын
As I know, most effective techniques with longsword/katana is deflecting and striking simultaneously. It's more difficult than block and strike, but with two handed weapon it's easier to engage the line of attack because you have more leverage and slightly heavier weapon, and if you dualweild you limited by defensive tactic, so you lack versatilisty. So I assume that with two hander you have some advantage anyway, not so huge though.
@EmperorAdewale
@EmperorAdewale Жыл бұрын
Full power strike of a longsword is going to break through blocks too often for the style to be that effective, you could get a few wins with it but once the weakness was figured out people would still gravitate toward the longsword plus it’s always cheaper to buy and maintain one blade over two lol
@wauzers

Not every stroke can be a power one plus not every block needs to be a block for example deflection and parry techniques. Southeast Asian martial arts have been using double blades as well as sticks for centuries and has worked well.

I found your video very interesting. I'm part of an international fencing network, which use multiple techniques from different martial arts, and we fight with 3 different weapons (long sword, double short swords and double edged staff/sword). I'm trying to focalize my skills with the double short swords and i felt in combat many of the situations captured by this video on camera. Using only one short sword at the time is the path to failure and defeat: it's hard but the key is to become fluid and proficient in doing things (offensivly or defensivly) with both weapons together but if necessary asynchronicly. Another key aspect is to gain control of adversary's weapon with a longer reach before going to close: our strenght is multiplicity, but our weakness is reach.

I love using two shortswords. You can parry and attack simultaneously, or you can feint and attack with the other. When you get in range, it's almost a guaranteed victory. To get there however, you should seek the bind (parry and keep one of your weapons in contact until you get in range for your attack).

I think the advantage of dual wielding is neutralised by the length of the katana. The katana basically forces a certain guard position bc otherwise it takes the easy win with a head-slash. From that position there's only one attack sequence that gives the wakizashis the win. However from that position the katana has so many attack sequences that led to the win. The only way for wakizashis to win with consistency is either fight in a reduced space in which the katana has troubles with horizontal slashes or basically overpower the rival with massive speed.

I think wakazashi cutting power is less than single katana. if opponent wears armor it's going to just scratch it :) to increase its power the user needs to do more thrusting than slashing, or slash only at weak spots.

The usual problem of testing 'unorthodox' but good weapons... In order to not be at a disadvantage against the opponent using a normal weapon that they are trained in, you have to actually drill in what to do when someone attacks you in various ways, and those drills don't really exist in any conventional martial art. On the HEMA side of things, Skallagrim fell victim to the same exact problems when trying to use dual sickles against an opponent with a sword.

IIRC arnis/eskrima also use dual short sticks. do they have methods to fight a long sword?

Arnisadors are trained in parrying/disarming enemy weapons and delivering quick attacks and counters. They use short bladed swords and are at disadvantage at long distances, but are fast and deadly when reaching up close. In short they have parrying techniques and fast counters in their advantage. I think this channel had a video featuring Arnis, plus those that feature them against HEMA, you can watch that.
