The tanto is a beautiful example of a compromise design that doesn't sacrifice much in either direction, be it cut or thrust. I know that there's actually quite a variety in terms of Tanto design (mostly how pointy it gets, and how much profile tapering, but some were complete outliers such as the forward curved tanto, the yari style tanto, etc.), but it doesn't get close in the variety of designs Europeans experimented with because they tried to fit a specific purpose. Today, most think of just the stereotypical miniature sword, which is often referred to as a cruciform dagger, but for war, rondel daggers were very popular (little cutting ability, disk pommel, and very thick blades for thrusting into armor). Then, there were daggers like kitchen knives, bowies, and on the other hand, the stiletto, which had no blade at all and there were special parrying daggers, etc. etc.

I am curious about Seki Sensei's experience with grappling. I recently was at a seminar with an instructor who specializes in dagger, wrestling and armored combat, especially from the Fiore manuscripts. There were a large number of things that I got from it, but one of the major ones was wrestling in a weapons context. One thing I thought was interesting was the technique that hid the dagger looked so much like it was a setup for a wrestling. (7:53) Just saying, I LOVE these videos. I'm a practitioner of HEMA, specifically the Liechtenauer tradition of longsword. I appreciate that Japan has a living history of martial arts. Many of the techniques that I see here remind me of my own studies. One critique I have is to get some safety gear and try to make these techniques work under pressure. HEMA has a lot of equipment readily available now; though mostly styled after European history (there are some Asian styles becoming available) Also there are sparring-safe katana!!!! (they're steel) Sigi Forge and Castille Armory

HEMA neglects it’s wrestling a lot. Even though it is fundamental to fencing. Also, a person would also think that the dagger would be the most prevalent weapon instead of a sword.

@@ericfierro1693 That really depends upon where you train. I've seen schools where e.g. ringen is as important as armed combat if not the absolute base. I do agree with you about the dagger being the prevalent weapon. Ofc this is depending upon the situation but most of the combat is/ends as mainly close combat

@@ericfierro1693technically the most historically prevalent european medieval weapon is actually a spear, and not the sword or the dagger. And the wrestling/grappling aspect depends entirely on what tradition of HEMA you are dedicating yourself to. There are plenty that orchestrate many grappling techniques depicted in treatises and manuscripts throughout history, though it is true that many of the “mainstream” and more popularized HEMA groups focus primarily on blade interactions and single 1 on 1 duels

Very interesting! Tendo Ryu, as a sogo-bujutsu, uses kaiken/aikuchi & tanto in the naginata-jutsu kata. There are also separate sets of kata for tanto & wakizashi.

Interesting 🤔🧐...Well, in the US my "Tanto" collection consists of the more modern James Williams CRKT Hissatsu 7 inch fix blade with mirror 🪞 finished s/s and a 2nd one with a blacked out blade finish...And a CRKT combat folder version with speed safe type action with double locks...As well as the Heiho 3.1 inch compact folder...

I ve always believed martial arts is all about speed. When 2 opponents are equally skilled in any form, the one who hits first wins. That tanto sure gives an advantage. though less range of course, so more situational. thank you for this demonstration

Do you train with a blade in your Filipino Art ? I have some training in Japanese ko Ryu and with the Filipino PTK , I have met GT. That is a great combative Art ! The Japanese Ko Ryu arts are real but 400 years removed from real use, as ware PTK is still used. When you train in Ko Ryu you can recognize the real waza or movements that are preserved but the Japanese kata try to look less bloodthirsty ! Scott

I'm not actually a trainee in filipino martial arts, Scott, though I would love to if I have the time. I am actually hooked into sword smithing and I got interested in Japanese swords a few years ago. It's not a good irony to be a Filipino making Japanese swords, but I just love it. You know some like to take pictures of the sunset, some play the piano. I just like to spend time at my forge and turn a piece of steel into a good knife/sword. That's why I asked about the difference between types of Japanese swords. Thanks for the invitation anyway.

Thank You Seki Sensei, really interesting. Being a Woman i would gravitate towards Tantō rather than Katano but i would use Katano if trained. I am interested in the Onna-musha or Woman Warriors, times are unstable & as much as there is weaponry, it damages all life so i am of the belief that Woman especially, must learn how to defend using Sword(s) & Aikido, will protect Woman & Family... I am Peaceful but i strongly believe in Self Defense. 🙏
