John, Do they have the lottery in the UK? If they do, you should go play it and win a ton of money! When I was working with 3ph motors, I only wired one up correctly once. The others (hundreds) always ran backwards and I would have to flip 2 leads! Good luck with your new VFD! I'm sure you will and your mill will be very happy! Thanks for sharing your work! Have a good one! My best to Debs and your Dad! Dave

Hi Dave. We do have the lottery over here. In fact we can also play the American lottery, so lookout all your money could be coming over here. :-)) regards.

A very nice improvement to working with the mill. As you say the jog buttons will be great for tapping.

John, I use the same inverter on both my mill and my lathe. If you have a tach, you can calibrate the speed readout in RPM instead of frequency using parameter 37.

Very nice bit of kit there John. For most of my work, I set the belt on next to the slowest pully, this will give extra torque to the low speeds. I rarely have to change the belt. When I'm doing power tapping, I use the forward-reverse switch. I have the braking set for 1 second, which works well. I'm sure you will enjoy the next set up. Cheers!

Nicely designed rig. I'm planning to install an inverter-run motor on my lathe. I think I will steal the idea of having a run/jog switch and single "go" button, rather than having separate run and jog buttons. It just seems safer to set it up that way. I will probably program the control to run the motor between 50% and 150% of nominal speed. This will give me a 3:1 speed range on any given belt setting. I expect I will need a digital tachometer, since all the old belt-arrangement/speed chart will no longer apply.

I'd get a cheap chinesium Tacho and add that to the setup so you can get the exact speed. obviously the Controller is setup for one range on the pullies but you'll not get full torque low down on slow speeds. I've Got a VFD and My Boxford and still change the pullies to give a better range and use the back gear too them very slow running is needed.

When I bought my Bridgeport, the machinist had it running on true 3-phase. I mentioned to him that, if I bought the machine, I would have to buy a VFD to run it at home. "Oh, you mean one of these?" he said. reaching to the back of a shelf. "It came with it when I got it--I was going to throw it out. You can have it." Of course, this guy had already thrown out the original x-drive.

It will interesting to see how much torque your mill now has at low motor RPM. I expect that you will find that you may still need to use the pulleys to get torque at low speed.

You should be able to go up to 100Hz or beyond with no problems. Motor might sound a little "busy" but should run just fine, saves on changing pulleys. Oh by the way could you please show a picture of the Quill downfeed handle on your mill somtime.

Hi John, I'm wondering if you need to keep the intermediate pulley arrangement. It does seem like a faff when you need to change the belts around. The ability to control speed at the turn of a knob makes that arrangement obsolete from what I can see. I upgraded my Boxford to a one HP motor and did away with the counter-shaft and now run directly onto the intermediate shaft. There are very few occasions where I need to change the belt position or even use back gear now.

Any value in building a bracket to put the motor where the middle pulley is now? That way you could push the mill back toward the wall six or eight inches.

Hi I think the harrison has a two speed motor and if so it would require a different type of VFD and unfortunately a much more expensive type, but I could be wrong.

You should ideally have an appropriately rated fast trip breaker or a semiconductor (fast blow) fuse between the supply and VFD.

Hi there, i have a similar inverter to yours and what looks like the same pendant but where you have 8 wires coming from your control I only have 7 and the one missing is the purple wire. I cannot find any information on how to correctly wire this into the inverter, do you have any guidance for me before I hand it over to someone else? Kind regards. Chris.

Great video John, though it is an inverter, i believe it would be more accurately described as a Variable Frequency Drive. I have the same Mitsubishi VFD setup on my Colchester Bantam lathes. I have two Bantam lathes (one metric, the other imperial) and i just use the one VFD with a changeover switch on the motor wiring so i can select either lathe 1 or lathe 2. My control panel (also Mitsubishi) connects to the VFD through the ethernet port with a standard network cable so i can easily switch control between the two. Those VFDs can be setup to do all sorts of clever things if you read the manual, adjust spool up and down times, electronic braking time adjustment, torque factors and all sorts. I can run my lathes down to 15 RPM and plenty of torque for tapping/reaming ect. I can also now increase the maximum RPM of the lathes from 800 to 1600 RPM by ramping up the frequency. Cutting threads is much easier with the ease of speed control/instant stopping and reverse at the touch of a button. Fitting a VFD was like buying a whole new lathe and totally transformed my machine and my machining. I'm looking forward to seeing you get to grips with this new toy! My milling machine puts on a small firework display from the motor brushes and lays down a smokescreen under heavy loads, has done for a while now. I'm just waiting for it to pop so i have an excuse to treat myself to another VFD :-D

Regarding the 3 phase and motor direction, if it doesn't turn at all, swap the middle wire with one of the outer ones.
@EVguru

It's a three phase motor. If you supply it with three phases, it will always run, no matter what order they're connected in.
