What gauge of silver solder is this that melts with a iron?

I'm back at your video. I bought a PRS SE McCarty 594 and played it for a few days. Pulled the strings to condition the board and polish the frets. I noticed the frets had many cuts and slices while looking through a 7X loop, so i used 1000 grit paper dry. It took the entire crown off including about .003" which is a lot. PRS frets are the softest frets I've ever encountered so be careful! The good news is that i always start on a fret at the bottom of the neck so i didn't hurt a critical fret. Thanks again for this awesome work around!!

That's absolutely brilliant. And since i can't find proper 12" radius fret wire for a beloved inexpensive Ibanez, I'm going to try that. I've figured out so many similar hacks over my life for the same reason as you, being broke! And sometimes i think it's more fun! Only sometimes though....🥴 Thank you for making the video:)

Did the same thing to my Yamaha FG 165-S using plain solder. As you said doesn't last long BUT it got me through for a while. Giving it another shot now with silver solder Paste.

Only the damaged frets need replacing. Take one fret out measure it with a caliper and order some new frets. Then use the removed fret for measurements shape a new fret and replace. Do this until there are no more damaged frets. You might need to level and profile the new frets.

Fret wire is not very expensive. I’d keep the guitar and replace the frets that get played the most. You can totally do it yourself if you are patient.

Most necks have a taper resulting in the frets being of different lengths. Measure first.

He's using silver BEARING solder, not "silver solder" (like a jeweler would use). True silver solder can only be melted with a small torch and you could never use it here. Silver BEARING solder is available at many places online. Try to get 4% silver bearing, as it will be the hardest (2% is common, but not as hard).

I just wish that frets were made of stainless steel...or at least something that's harder than guitar strings. I'm saving up for one of the new Yamaha Revstars that do have stainless steel frets.

You can buy stainless frets in most sizes. Only a couple bucks more for a set compared to standard nickel silver.

Was just gonna say; why not just spend a bit of extra time and order andreplace the frets, take it to a store and have them set them up? They have all the tools. That being said; this is a good emergency repair, if time is of the essence

I tried this but the solder wont stick 🤦‍♂️ it just turns to liquid mush and becomes watery 😑

Put a dot of soldering flux on the spot before applying the solder. It will work a lot faster and bond better.

Silver is a very very soft metal- and that is why they don't make frets out of it. Putting enough heat on a fret to melt the silver solder is going to damage the wood. And silver solder won't adhere to some metals used for frets. I didn't watch the video, but the headline screams- BAD IDEA!

It’s an ok fix for maybe a dent or two but this guitar needs to have the frets replaced. Hopefully you can afford a new guitar now.

Metal components and health effects need to be addressed here even using unleaded solder. Might be the time to learn how to fret and the availability of affordable quality frets such as Jim Dunlop, Jescar, Stew Mac, Sanko, and Polymet and there are ways doing the job with basic tools.
