I first started with a 500w halogen linear security light bulb but kept changing them for lower wattage bulbs when they eventually failed and eventually realised 120w was actually more than enough.

I haven't tried these led linear halogen replacement bulbs yet but I'm sure they should produce light to 120w equivalent for my needs, obviously you have to weigh up cost of bulbs and their life span as well as brightness, energy consumed and if they safely fit as replacements.

Yeah from my experience of having a security light that goes on and off at least thirty times a night, I rarely need to change the halogen bulbs maybe be one every two years, especially if you don't touch and contaminate the glass when fitting so I am not complaining.

I've found Security light PIR's are actually much more effective at head height and can actually be triggered by people walking past on the opposite side of a narrow street, which is brilliant to warn residents someone is out and about. Thick heads of hair and people wearing hoods are often not detected by a PIR unfortunately, as they're not detecting their body heat.

I gave same fixture with 3 lights; but there’s a clip-on glass shield which goes over the old bulb. I imagine it won’t be needed or fit with needs new bulbs. The insane heat reduction alone- will be worth it. 1 dead out of 3 since 2007 or so!

250watt or below will be because it is only built to withstand so much heat and current for that gauge of wire used inside it.

Halogens are extremely bright, fragile, expensive, short lived, generate dangerous levels of heat. LED replacements are great!

The halogen light in my floor lamp lasted for a decade maybe more and I used the lamp every single day. LED floor lamp bulbs would be a great alternative to halogen T3 R7 if the lumen output is the same and also because it's getting hard to find T3 halogen bulbs. LED bulbs can get really hot too I have some that got so hot the base cracked.

LED will be great eventually but I have bought some that did not last at all, burnt out in a week. I went through dozens until I happened upon a better quality brand that works longer term. I will see just how long. Halogen is dangerous.

Halogens in PIR security lights virtually last forever I've had security lights with halogen lamps for decades with them activated 30 times a night minimum being next to a publicly used alleyway, you just remember not to make contact with your fingers on the glass when fitting bulb as it considerably reduces bulb lifespan sometimes to a few days.

It's the life span of led bulbs that's worrying as the initial outlay is so much best getting from reputable store or direct from company with guarantee, many companies selling direct now cutting out Amazon and Ebay

Warning.. Don’t expect the LED bulb to last long. I bought LED replacements for most of my household applications and while way more efficient, they flicker and die within weeks, whereas the halogens last for years. Another tip-off is many LED type bulb are sold in ten packs..you’re gonna need them.

That’s my experience too. Some brands are junk. They all seem to be made in China with no way of knowing the differing levels of quality. I ended up trying several brands until I found one that is working well so far.
