The sad thing is that the HBO animated series based on Harold and the Purple Crayon does a proper job at expanding the book's premise. Each episode Harold goes on different adventures depending on his mood and experiences of the day and kept him a child. While it was short-lived, it was super sweet. And that was also made by Sony in the early 2000s.

Harold and the Purple Crayon actually gained a short-lived animated series which aired on HBO Family back in the early 2000s. The series does a proper job at expanding the book's premise since each episode is driven by Harold's mood and experiences he went through that day. It's super heartfelt and is beautifully narrated with Harold only saying brief moments of dialogue (which is not often) in some episodes. He's also established as a real person since each episode begins and ends in the real world and has his own mother. Harold only travels to a world where his drawing come to life around bedtime. It's much more respectful to the source material than this movie.

I grew up with the HBO Family show and when I heard they were making a movie, I hoped it was closer to that or even the book. For me, it should've been a movie where it's a 5 or 6 year old kid who goes to his world done in 2D drawn animation in different shades of purple with his dog and goes on a sail boat, the circus, up on the mountains, across a big city and a parade, or faces a dragon on a skyscraper. Go wild with a kid's imagination. I guess if you want to add stuff for conflict, maybe Harold has a sister or brother and maybe discovers what Harold can do in the middle of the night and gets jealous and naturally tries to take it over but in the process, ruins Harold's world. A fantasy adventure of siblings going at it. I think kids could relate because we all have arguments with our siblings. But in the end, the purple crayon is snapped in half and that's when you can have the classic moral of learning to share, share with others' creativity, and learning to love your siblings and admiring their art and blending them to something greater. And ends with them returning back to the live action world to go to sleep together. Simple, charming, timeless and sticks closer to the original book/cartoon's overall feel for all ages and captures the nostalgic trip of being a kid again. But nooooo, of course we can't get something like that because Shazam is hip for kids and Sony... well, just being Sony. 😞

The sad thing is Sony previously worked on the Harold and the Purple Crayon animated series that aired on HBO Family back in the early 2000s. The series was actually respectful and stayed true to the source material while expanding on Harold's world of bringing his drawings to life.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t just make this into an animated movie or something. Give it the same art style as the Captain Underpants movie, easy peasy. Also I can’t believe Zachary Levi played a man child twice. Gee, and he wonders why his career took a plummet lol.

I liked the movie actually. It was fun. Also, there's a video game it reminds me of called Max and the Magic Marker. I played the sequel of that game. I kind of remember the book growing up as a young child. Zachary Levy has this type of film on lock with Sham as well. Hope he gets to do more types of films though. That Joe Montana movie is pretty good

Does it explain why Harold had to grow up? Probably would’ve been more charming if it was a kid

I remember reading the book when i was in elementary school back in '93 and yes its in the book as well. Its a great read.Like with the book where the wild things are.So the book is better then the film sometimes.Had to edit,im talking about the animated short to the book is similar. Not this trash of a film.

There's also an animated series that aired on HBO Family in the early 2000s which expands on the book's premise. I remember loving that show a lot as a kid. The episodes are sweet and relaxing and reminded me of Little Bear.

I liked that they shifted the view to an empty chair. As a viewer it makes you project your own interpretation of an image.
