As a Mexican. That loves musicals. And is bilingual. This was not it. It was made by a bunch of people that have no knowledge and made no effort to understand Mexico and its big big problem. I think Julien is way out line saying it was “blown out of proportion” the concerns raised by MEXICANS are valid and have been backed by the director himself admitting he made no effort to learn about Mexico. AND Selena Gomez’s accent was not the issue. Sofia Vergara has an accent and she is great in what she does. The difference is Sofia knows English and understands what she is saying so she can act. Selena does not know what she is saying she doesn’t understand Spanish so she is not acting she is just reading off a script that someone wrote phonetically for her. I respect that people liked it because it’s made for them it reduces a country and its issues and reduces transgender people to something that the masses can understand but I think juliens comments about the controversy being blown out of proportion is not fair and doesn’t acknowledge that this isn’t fictional country with a fictional problem. It’s a real problem that was not given the care or respect it deserved. You can like what you like but that doesn’t take away from the issues other people saw.

In her case it’s different cause if anyone who is “no sabo” really wanted to learn and had the time, money, and overall resources of someone like Selene Gomez I am 90% sure they would’ve already taken that opportunity and learned it. It’s not easy and it takes time and it will take practice but some people don’t have the luxury and she does. So there’s really no excuse for her. Not only does she have the capacity but it’s technically her job. Btw keep going! Understanding is a big accomplishment and little by little it’ll be easier for you to speak it. Don’t let people that hate on “no sabo” kids get you down.

Totally agree, specially with the part about being blown out of proportion. Also a script that was apparently translated with Goggle Translate and has so many grammatical errors, that it was obvious it wasn’t run through someone who knew Spanish.

As a Latina transwoman, I found this movie to be incredibly reductive. It doesn't even try to portray an image of Mexico outside of violence and death. Doctors would not DENY a patient because they want gender-affirming surgery because the doctor thinks that the person doesn't need it based off of 'identity' reasons; they would do it because of a MEDICAL reason. Not to mention that when someone is getting these surgeries, they do not do them in a bunch like they display in the film; that is dangerous. Also, having Emilia Perez be this terrible person before their transition does not equate to transitioning as something where you're no longer that person you previously identified as; that is not how transitioning works. Insane how they don't even try to get some of the medical factors correct, like smell. When someone is transitioning, especially for over two years, as shown in the film, they no longer have a 'man' smell. The HRT increases the estrogen in the body, and because of that, the pheromones used to create sweat will produce a different smell. This movie is terrible and is this generation's Crash.

But the film is like musicians reading all different sheet music. These pieces could be well utilize, but it seems noisy and off even an insult meshed together.

Wicked is still its own thing very grandiose. But the form is more standard. Why make a Spanish musical with non-singers or not comfortable with the language? They're monotone or flow poorly. The subject is a little jarring in the format. But if they attempted with people closer to the subjects and format, it would flow better.

I think this movie is a good example of why it’s important to not only get multiple opinions on a movie, but to also get opinions from the people/groups the movie is focusing on. Ex: I hear Julian’s opinion and respect he’s coming from a film loving angle/filmaking angle., Its just going to be harder to see where he is coming from if you heard how much a lot of trans people and the Mexican/hispanic community feel so disrespected by the movie and that it adds fuel to the fire for a lot of harmful narratives to these communities (especially trans people).

Every awards season, there’s always one that sticks out like a sore thumb among the Best Picture nominees, Blind Side, Don’t Look Up, Bohemian Rhapsody, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, etc. This year, Emilia Perez is that movie! Y’all compare it to how people reacted to Green Book, but I say it’s more like Crash where I’m sure there were some good intentions put into it with the the subjects it’s focusing on and it’s not like it’s poorly acted, but it comes off so misguided that it just feels like it’s there for Hollywood to pat themselves on the back, not to mention it’s tonally & structurally messy and the songs are terrible.

Sorry not sorry, but Demi Moore, Lily Rose Depp and Nicole Kidman (only Moore is actually nominated) did way better jobs than Karla Sofia. Just because she's trans it doesn't mean she absolutely had to be nominated much less win.Like Margaret Qualley was way better than Zoe Saldana (props to Zoe though for being able to treat that atrocious script with a modicum of seriousness, and manage an non-offensive amount of both spanish and song)

This movie is so bad that a branch of the Mexican government had to get involved lol. Basically the main movie theater chain in Mexico calls all the movies they screen "Guaranteed" and under Mexican law if you say a service is "guaranteed" and the customer doesn't like it, they're entitled to get their money back. So people were asking for their money back after watching this movie in rows, lol.

I respect Julian for being honest with his opinions and being consistent, even though I almost always disagree with him, and that’s okay. With that being said. This movie “Simple Jack”ed itself and the nominations put unnecessary heat on it. Bad movies get made every day but the question is why did this bad movie get so many nominations despite some major misjudgments? I don’t believe this film was made with the intention of being “great” (even the director didn’t care about important details) but it got the attention of the right “hipster thinkers” the same way ‘The Blind Side’ got a profit by making the rich soccer mom crowd feel good about themselves despite the film crapping on details that mattered. 🤷🏾‍♂️

In my opinion the full film was actually worse than expected from the clips because the messaging at the core of the film is so tone deaf and harmful to both trans people and men. Meanwhile the music is terrible and dull, with middle school grade blocking and singing. Additionally, the actors are clearly too talented for the script to a distracting degree. This is not a movie to be celebrated whatsoever, it should be viewed as an oddity

One word Yes😅. The longer answer: as a Spanish speaker it constantly hurt my ears. Zoe can speak some Spanish but has not the fluently needed to convey emotions while acting, as martin said it felt wooden and I know she can act but here she is so bad that it came across as someone that just learned some lines but doesn't understand what she is saying. Selena on the other hand 🤦, girl we love ,you are gorgeous and have gotten so much underserved hate lately for your weight, so I would love to be kinder but cant lie, she is the worst one, she cant pronounce more than two words 😢, I was having a hard time understanding the movie by hearing her talking, and its such a shame since her character was central to the plot, but she was so distracting and annoying, unbelievable, how anyone from the production team said anything and saved the movie. The actress that played emilia is a spain spanish person that considers herself as Mexican, but saldy she cant speak Mexican Spanish either, it was also distracting as she was supposed to sound as a Mexican cartel lord but sounded like someone with a nasty cold😂. The localization was awful, some lines and songs lyrics made no sense with sentences like "que quiere mi marido usted no querer que?" 😂😂😂😂. Like that, every scene had non sense dialogue to the point half things made sense. How was this nominated to 13 Oscars!!!!!!???? It should have been nominated to razzi 😂

Speak-singing works well when the material is specifically written that way, like all of Henry Higgins’ music in My Fair Lady was written to match the natural ebbs and flows of a male voice. So when you speak the lyrics, it compliments the accompaniment
