Nice job finding the leak, hope you will dismantle the engine to see what was wrong, rings, piston, scored cyl. wall, etc.

Precise and to the point. I've seen way to many of these mowers that are basically a toss away once they won't run any longer. Although, the plastic carb won't rust.

Thanks you. Very straight forward. I've got a problem with the oil spitting out on the deck. Now I've got some ideas how to track the problem down. Appreciate the info.

Thanks! I was asked to look at a toro 22” similar to that one. I figured I would at least start by draining the oil and replacing the spark plug and filter. After doing that, it was still spitting oil, so I searched and found your video, which almost confirms that all hope is lost for this puppy. :( Thanks for the education!

My mower will spray a little oil out the muffler and it shoots some gas out the breather.but it been doing this for 2 years mower runs great any idea

another thing that happens is the head gasket is bad. or your valves not seating. for the 65 compression Briggs has a valve release so 65 can be good still 80 is better but if the head gasket is leaking then the compression would be lower. a good way to tell if it is a head gasket leak into the valves is run it shut it off and pull your dipstick if smoke comes out then you know exhaust is getting in from a blown head gasket.

I’ve been recording the compression of all 4 strokes coming into my shop the last month or so to get an average baseline. Briggs, Tecumseh, and Koehler. They all have ranged between 55-65 psi with one coming in at 85. Thing is, they all passed and operated fine. In your vid when you did yours I was surprised when you said it was low, then even MORE surprised when it failed the check. I’m doing this only about 18 months so I’m learning. Is there a reason why my checks are coming in “low” but still seem to pass? Thank you, and please keep up the great work. I love your vids my man.
@fleetwin14 ай бұрын
Not familiar with the newer models, but am thinking they have compression relief systems that can fool us into thinking compression is low. This oil complaint seems to be somewhat common on this style engine, perhaps the head gasket is blown allowing oil from the crankcase to sneak into the combustion chamber through the valve/push rod chamber.... Can't imagine this engine being all worn out, seems kinda new, unless someone ran it low on oil. I hope to get to mess with one of these things someday

Hey buddy do you know why a mower would spit oil out of the of the black tube under and behind the carbrator. Leaking on the frame and deck and front tire. Leaking bad. SO I FOUND OUT BY TEARING INTO THE ENGINE AFTER I REPLACED THE BEATHER ASSEMBLY AND IT WAS STILL SPRAYING OIL OUT OF THE BREATHER ASSEMBLY, I FOUND OUT THE HEAD GASKET WAS BAD. HAD A SMALL PART MISSING CAUSING CYLIDER PRESSURE TO GO INTO THE CRANKCASE.

I have the same one. I have oil spitting out of the muffler I think. What is that silver piece in the front left? According to my manual, it's saying it's the muffler. It's spewing oil out of that hole and blowing white smoke. I know what you're gonna say.... Yes, I did do a tune-up... I changed the filter and spark plug and also changed the oil. I don't know anything about doing a compression check. I may have to take it into an authorized dealer.

I tipped my Troy Built TB110 carburetor side up to replace the blade. Now im having problems with the plug turning black, clean it, it runs again. No leaking on onto the deck, When I took off the air filter plate and looked at the back side i noticed oil in the pattern of the carburetor gasket as if the gasket is bad. Probably the original gasket. I done a complete tear down rebuilding the carburetor cleaning the jets, fuel bowl, washing all plastic parts and flushing them with carburetor cleaner. Fuel tank washed flushed and dried in the hot sun. No oil on the air filter. Only a little bit on the air filter plate on the top hole. Is it normal for a little oil to be on the top exhaust plate and hose that pushes in. The main problem is that the mower will fire over and start and cut grass it'll run great sometimes stalling out due to black spark plug. I clean the plug and it fires right back up. I'm wondering did i get oil into the carburetor when I tipped it on the side to change the blade. Im also wondering if I need a new carburetor gasket due to seeing the pattern of the gasket in oil. Thanks for any advice that you can help me with.

Air coming back up through the dipstick tube could be a ring problem or cylinder scoring like you said but it could also be a head gasket...if the head gasket fails internally (between the cylinder and the pushrod gallery) then air will make its way into the crankcase and out the dipstick tube...this is where the briggs and stratton head gaskets are known to fail

That compression gauge is for cars not mowers. Also most mower engines have compression releases to make starting easier. Makes for lowered pressure values.

Likely a blown head gasket between the cylinder and pushrod gallery

That’s what I was thinking. DW6! We can’t stand the suspense, pop that head off! Haha
@doublewide63 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, because there is not oil pushing out the breather, no smoke in the dipstick, but I can check. The engine was way overfilled with oil when I got it as well.
@macknumber9 Жыл бұрын
Yes much more likely that the head gasket would fail before an issue with ring/cylinder...the air will get down into the crankcase if gasket fails between cylinder and pushrod gallery which is where they always fail on briggs... I had an engine spitting oil and smoking simply because the wrong oil was put in...turns out the lady put 2 cycle oil in the crankcase...that low viscosity was making its way right past the rings into the cylinder and burning off and then spitting out the exhaust because not all of it was getting burnt...it was flooding the cylinder with oil...

I have a question. you pulled down the cover for the air cleaner and there is a small plastic tube that runs off the full tank at the top. why would gas spill out of it when the tank is full when moving the mower. it starts to leak out of the air filter housing on to the mower deck under the air filter ?any one know ?

Check the carb needle valve seat and float adjustment. Problems with these cause gas to leak out of carb.
