In my experience most of the problems with those small mower engines are the result of bad fuel and the resulting damage it does to the carburetors. I'm fortunate and have easy access to reasonably priced non-ethanol fuel, so I have hardly any problems with my lawn equipment. I'm actually surprised at how bullet proof these small engines are these days. They won't last 50 years like they used to but there's no reason you can't get 20 years service out of them with simple maintenance (oil and air filter changes and by using good, clean, fresh fuel.) Thanks Bob for taking us along on this one.

Thank you so much for this fix. My bowl was not floating correctly, stuck open. Resulted in mower dying and fuel gushing out the air box. Changed the needle seat gasket now everything peachy! Mowed for over half hour without any issues. Now on to fixing the tranny cable and belt. Good times. Thanks again, keep up the good work!

Talking is good; a running commentary explaining what you are doing is, IMHO, beneficial. I dislike those videos where they don't speak, and shake things at you or point and whirl their finger around the object in question. My neighbour dropped his 'sit-on' for me to look at with just this problem, so the blowing and Q-tip tips will be put into action. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great video. I have a Lawn Boy mower with a Kohler XT149 engine that leaked gas out of the carburetor. The gasoline also made the air filter rubber gasket swell up and not fit in its housing properly ... I ended up buying several air filters until I fixed the gas leak. I checked the carburetor float and cleaned the needle valve and seat per another video ... although they were clean. The problem was the fuel bowl O-ring and maybe the small O-ring on the fuel bowl drain screw. Since I have a new carburetor coming in the mail, I used gasket sealant on those O-rings that were not as supple as they should've been and they were getting thinner and becoming a little brittle. After the fix, I put fuel in the tank and the mower started on the first, easy pull. Perfect!

Doublewide6 Repairs Just went through this same issue on my Toro. Didn't have any parts so I got a new carb. for 13.00, checked it out and found the float is the problem. Looked just like the one you had, not quite level. Any way, it runs great, those plastic floats just don't last. Good video, thanks.

I've gotten bad cheap carbs often enough to avoid them. Even worse, customers often come in with brand new cheap carbs and insist that the problem can't be the carb, because they replaced the original $75 carb with a $10 carb off of ebay. I've gotten lucky before myself, and not so lucky more often.

one thing I do when working on a carburetor is after u remove it from the mower take a screwdriver or marker and put a line/mark on bowl below the fuel inlet so in case your bowl gasket happens to be questionable and its midnight you can put bowl back in the same place and still use the carburetor until you can get one.

You can punch a small hole in the nail with a paper clip burnt to red hot. The haematoma below the nail can be drained. In good hands, no anaesthesia was required, no sterilisation was needed. Of course, washing of the dirt from nail surface was required. Dressing by a band-aid is sufficient.

The common small rubber seats are the same. Usually red for Briggs and green or white for Tecumseh, at least the originals. There are a couple odd carbs that use a larger size- it's hard to find. But I often get Briggs in with green or white ones and Tecumsehs with red ones. Someone else put them in and they worked for years until they swole from ethanol gas.

using a heat gun to warm up the plastic to bend the tang on the float really works well . its just like when you take your glass's to get repaired , they put your temples in a heated sand to warm up the plastic and make it more pliable . this process works until the next time it needs to be adjusted . so you really cant get away from this problem until the use something other than plastic . I did this on a 19.5 briggs motor that some one threw away cause it kept flooding out and the motor was carboned up but after fix and sea foam it ran great and started right up .

Good job man, nice shiny end result on the carb too. Hope you don't mind me giving you a tip that always worked for me with customers, when returning the goods clean them before, make it look good. Customers can not always see where or what you did, and probably don't care apart from it works again, but if it's clean then they feel happy to pay the bill. This I did for ten years running my own garage, human behaviour haha.

Excellent, and one question. My Murrary Briggs 6.5 HP has never had problems. Suddenly, wouldn't start, so first I replaced the Champion spark, new air filter, but this time, the gas flowed through the air filter. I searched a collection of KZbins (Thank Heavens you exist).Question. At 7:44 you removed the carburetor bolt but you had already removed the entire carburetor. What I watched for was around 15..suddenly the bolt is on the bottom and carburetor back together. Some vids remove the bolt first, before removing the carburetor, and then use thin wires to clean various holes in that bolt which supply the fuel. With some, that was all they did, put the bolt back on and the lawn mower worked perfectly. I didn't see where you cleaned the holes in the bolt.

Organized shop pays off in dividends, and keeping it that way is not always easy. I smashed my middle finger with a crowbar and it was about 40% black. Read online and the rule of thumb is if about 1/3 is black, do not drill nail to relieve pressure and remove blood. It took five months and finally part of the black fingernail fell off with new growth underneath. It hurts st first and it is a slow process, but try to be patient. Nice fix on float.

If I'm not mistaken your engine uses a 498260 carb kit....Those kits come with 2 different bowl gaskets and 2 different air box gaskets..... Your EZ start / Auto choke carb uses the thicker bowl gasket and the simple air box gasket... No need for the gasket with the hole in it.... Save that one for a primer bulb style air box and save 4 bux like that for another carb job... Ok now to the nitty gritty........ I don't think your float was bad.... Both floats were out of level the seat was swollen... I am wrong a few times and I might be wrong now..... I have seen those seats go bad tooooo many times.... Ethanol gas will do that all the time ...... But you got it going and it doesn't leak so you got it whipped.......... I use the smaller kit 398188 a lot of times.... That is just the needle and seat kit and it's 5 bux instead of 14 bux for the whole kit.... I am a Briggs dealer so I keep both those kits in stock and plenty of them tooooo... That Etho gas is keeping us in business for sure ............. Plus Tard Mon Ami ~!~! BTW... YES more narration helps a video a lot ..............

Quick way to relieve a blood blister under your nail like that is to heat up a needle over your stove, holding it with a pair of pliers, than all you do is just barely touch the nail with the needle. Opens it right up. Plus the needle is sterile from the heat.

I hear you, man, about keeping the shop cleaned up. You might like to know it's an old, old problem. "Socrates: And suppose you have two people. One has every tool in the book, but he can't find them when he needs them. The other doesn't have so many but he can find them when he needs them? This because the latter just throws them down anywhere when he'd done, but the other has everything arranged, each in its appointed place. Which one of them is better equipped? The one who has a lot of tools but can't find them, or the one who has few but knows where they are?" Xenophon, 5th century B.C.

Same thing's happening with my Craftsman 5.3 mower. My dads getting up in age and gets his lawn done now so he gave me his 5.3 craftsman mower and his 32cc craftsman weed eater. Both leaked fuel. I replaced all the gas on the weed eater and it fired right up. The lawnmower however, I filled it with gas. Try to pull start it like 20 times and nothing. Then I noticed the garage started smelling like gas all night. I went to check why the mower smelled of leaking gas and I noticed the deck of the mower was a little wet with gasoline. Looked to see where it was coming from and noticed the filter is wet with gas as well. Would this most likely be the same issue you had on your customers mower??

When I was working a shrimp boat many moons ago a friend dropped a cable guide on his thumb..... 25 pounds worth of steel ........ His was worse than yours.. He took his Buck 110 knife and drilled the nail to relieve the pressure... The weight of the knife plus a lil hand pressure made a hole to relieve the pain...... Hey man that pressure on your finger is almost as bad as a toothache..... Plus Tard Mon Ami ~!~!

worked for me! except, my float was angled. in fact, I got another float, and that also angled too. I just had to replace the tiny rubber thing.
