I really love watching you towing your daughter around. That procedure is necessary it doesn't mean you cannot make it fun at the same time. Your trailer really turned out nice good job.

Let me get this right, you have a 12k winch on a trailer rated for 2k, and you used gear clamps to hold the side post terminals to the top post battery. You could have saved a few hundred and got a 3k atv winch, had a lot more room in the box, and spent $10 on top to side post adaptors, be way cheaper ,and have a way nicer setup.

I'm using a 7 watt panel on diesel pickup that sits way more than it's driven. That's enough to keep the two batteries up and the radio presets in place. I guess for your application the math would be based on how much power you are drawing from the battery and available recharge time. Don't for get that modern 7-pin trailer cables include an AUX circuit that you can use to top off the winch battery on the way. If you go that way use an isolation relay to avoid the winch "borrowing" power from the truck through a 30 amp fuse. Please keep your excellent videos coming.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks that is very insightful information. I was unaware the trailer connection has the AUX circuit available. Bob
@alantschirner6063

Look under your hood for a pair of 10 gauge red and blue wires. They may be disconnected and wiretied Brad your firewall. Wiring convention is the blue is your brake controller and red is the aux circuit. Also confirm your white ground wire is large enough to carry your planned charging current. Google is full of trailer connector pin outs and installation guidelines for your particular truck. I highly recommended a thermal circuit breaker and a rated isolation relay to make your installation trouble free.

please please use this as a way to NOT do this type of project. Your "roller unit" aka fairlead is mounted to wood and has become the pivot point for the load being pulled because the winch is lower than the load. That wood will break at some point. You cut the trailer steel and didn't weld it back up you welded that little hunk of crap to it but looks like you left the slot you cut. Please don't put such terrible info out there. If someone tries to scale this up to a car trailer people can very well get hurt.

First of all great job! But just a few suggestions. I have kind of the same set up . It's better to use a dry cell battery for a stand alone for this. And yes overkill on the wench but it will work fine but you need to spool the cable. Once you do this the cable should wind by itself on the wench . Not doing this it will take its toll on your cable. Park your trailer so it can't move (hooked to your truck P brake on) You want a slight hill. Then pull the cable all the way out. Put a swivel on the end to let the cable twist then hook it up to a tractor or whatever in neutral. then get behind the wench 3'-5'. As your pulling it in guide the cable with good gloves side to side on wench SLOWLY ! Keep tension on it the whole way . If it screws up simply reverse it a couple winds and start again. I hope this helps you . I'm not very good at explaining.

I wouldnt trust that setup to be there after a short road trip much less pulling any load.

I just saw your video and I was wondering did you have to put a cover over the hole you cut in the toolbox to keep water ie rain out? That was a great job on it by the way. I'm going to install one on my trailer, but until I can get a box I'm going to make it removable so it won't set out in the weather. I'm glad I found you again. I hope your son is well!!!

Overall nice install. What's the current rating on your hose clamp battery connections? If you park your trailer outside a small solar panel would be a great charger.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
I like the solar panel idea, I am outside with the trailer. The hose clamps just hold the wire terminal tight to the battery stub. The current should take the path of least resistance so travel down the copper terminal and to the wire rather than the stainless steel hose clamp. Am I correct to assume this? Thanks Also do you know what size solar panel would work?
@danburch9989

For others, I would think you'd need cable that extends maybe 15-20 ft max beyond the back of the trailer. As each layer of cable is wound onto the winch, the capacity of the winch decreases considerably. Four layers of cable drops the capacitry down about 65%. But for your application, that wouldn't be an issue as you're not loading a 8,000 lb truck ontro the trailer.

Nice setup! I am inspired to do something similar! A question. If your winch is rated for 12,000# then how is the winch attached to the trailer? Can winch attachment withstand 12,000# pull? I didn't see how they were attached in the video? Thanks for the video.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 7 жыл бұрын
My setup could hold 3000lbs. nowhere near the full winch rating. I won't pull anything more than a ton on that trailer. In fact, that is all it is rated for. The video shows how I welded a strong bar across and used plywood as well as bolts to hold down the winch. Take a close look at the video.

That winch is way too big for that trailer, if you ever pulled anything with weight maxing that winch out you would probably RIP it off the frame. And you should really get battery terminals and a deep cycle battery.
