This is so fu**ing true! I got my best mixes when i used less guitar tracks and now i only double track my guitars and bring in more guitars just when need to. Great video as always! \m/

I'd love to see more videos on screaming/singing vocals alike. I always think I need so many vocal tracks to sound big/wide, and I do find myself deleting tracks and it sounding better, but it's still sometimes lacking the width, power I hear on professional records.

Very cool. I was always told to always double screams, it is refreshing to see a single take up the center. Cheers! Great video.

I stumbled across your video while researching that reverse echo thing that people use to lead into a scream in a vocal track. This was a really helpful for mixing/producing. Great video. I am found this out by accident on not just screaming vocals, but many other vocals as well. Great technique and explanation. Thanks!

But if I have scream vocals only on the chorus (Linkin Park style, with clean vocals in the verses) wouldn't it be good to have the stereo doubles for the choruses (with the harmonies maybe sung clean)?

@Hardcore Music Studio Can you or someone clarify what he means by "using left and right" doubles? Do you mean left and right channels by panning left and right? What does "single tracking the lead vocal" mean? Center channel (no panning) in mono?
@Mike_2501
@Mike_2501 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you got it right. Instead of recording multiple takes of the same part and layering the takes in top of each other, you just have a single mono take for the lead part. Then a left panned and right panned take, just where you want emphasis on certain words. So you'd have three or four total vocal tracks, main up the middle, backing hard panned left and right.

Jordan, thanks so much for all your useful information. I’m on the email list and your channel has proven to be quite a valuable resource for me. Quick question with this video: one of the dub tracks is stereo, while the rest are mono. What’s the reason for this? Thanks so much
@stonecoldsober08
@stonecoldsober08 6 жыл бұрын
I think he explains it at 3:12. For emphazising parts, he is using double tracks in stereo and if there is also a low vocal line, he puts it mono in the middle.
@HollerAtcherBoi
@HollerAtcherBoi 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Schattevoi Forgive my rookie questions, but did that stereo track start out as 2 separate mono takes that were somehow turned into one single stereo track? If so, why not keep them as two mono tracks panned hard left and right?
@stonecoldsober08
@stonecoldsober08 6 жыл бұрын
@@HollerAtcherBoi probably I don't know more than you. If u are recording with the same mic I guess it doesn't make any difference. Maybe he just put it into one track for a better overview?!
@hardcoremusicstudio
@hardcoremusicstudio 6 жыл бұрын
sorry for the confusion on this. They were recorded as two separate takes, and then at mix time I combined them on to one stereo track. You can do this in pro Tools by just dragging to mono clips onto a stereo track.

Less is more but the vocalist is either very controlled or the vocals are highly compressed. But yeah, a lot of time what makes a thing sound muddy or un-energetic, it's because there's TOO MUCH competing for space/sound, and so NOTHING gets the space it needs to really ring and be brilliant.
@lodougherty

How do you make a single vocal take up the middle sound beefy/thick enough without going ultra wide or layering too much?
@JTMConceptions
@JTMConceptions Жыл бұрын
From my experience (which isn't too expansive lol) I've had a lot of success simply using a combination of a strong compression with very fast attack/release and large ratio, solid EQ, and a small amount of stereo widening. It sounds like on this video with his vocal tracks, he's also using a distortion effect on the vocals very slightly just to add a bit more grit and aggressiveness to the tone, which can help, but I tend to stay away from distortion plug-ins on vocal mixing personally.

Jordan how do you record the stereo vocals? With 1 stereo mic (or 2 mics next to each other) or do you use 1 mic and let the singer sing it twice?
@hardcoremusicstudio
@hardcoremusicstudio 6 жыл бұрын
One mic, separate takes. I just combine them into a stereo track when I mix, since I want them panned out hard left and right.

Well, i don't know. Looks like very stupid idea - screaming all the time.. I mean, if you sings about something sad and then screaming, just for contrast, its cool, but yell like a half-cut all the time - its so boring to hear!

Something that is a fundamental vocal technique can’t be outdated. That’s like saying singing is outdated despite it being a core element of most music. Metal uses aggressive vocals for a reason, if you don’t like it just don’t listen.
