John Patrick Shanley saved my life. I was suicidal after my mom died in 1990 and then I saw Joe Versus The Volcano. The man's writing/directing ability put everything in perspective for me and my situation. God Bless John Patrick Shanley.

I loved his acceptance speech after winning the Oscar for "Moonstruck." A real person, very young at that time. The movie "Doubt" is one of my favorites and now I know he wrote it.

He wrote and directed Joe versus the Volcano - every time I sit down to write I just think of that film and it stops me in my tracks. It is my favourite film of all time, there is just so much going on at all kinds of levels. I think what he teaches you is that it can't be taught, it has to be original.
