Doubtest Not: The Benchmade Redoubt

Making some great knifes, BM has nevertheless fell asleep over the last 5 years. A couple HOF Blades like the Bugout are surrounded by rehashes of past designs. Not this one. The Redoubt 430 features a cool new build design, ready for mods no doubt. We will consider some past BM EDC greats and then get on with the reasons why I'd buy a Redoubt.

So the deal is.. you basically got me into knives. I was designing vehicles, but then your vids started dropping like a decade ago. I got hired by Benchmade and was the industrial designer for benchmade starting in 2013..I did the concepts for that one, the bugout, and pretty much anything designed in house for them. I left the company a couple years ago..but recently got back into the knife game with another company. Super stoked. Years ago I met you and Mrs Nutn at Shot..which was a highlight of my career!! Still love the classic KRV"s

I never buy Benchmade. After they volunteered to destroy confiscated guns for Portland. I told them that and so did in a line of people at the NRA Convention at the last Indy show.

I got delivery of mine yesterday (08/28/2023). The handle to me feels cheap but I love the comfort and the girth. The blade is very slicy. Mine has got 'first production' printed on it. Didn't take long to break in. It's drop shut. I didn't touch the pivot screw. Pocket clip is excellent. I just wish they smoothed out the portion where the clip touches the scale. Overall, it's a great design and executed very well. Could be an only knife.

The Redoubt was my first BM which I picked up at Blade Show West last fall. Now I am waiting on a crater lake blue and tan Bugout. Nice review!!!

Hey nutn, I am an edge pro apex user as well, since your original review many many moons ago. Invest in an angle cube, makes it super easy to get consistent edge angles on knives without flats. You lay it the way it lays, put the cube in it and zero it out, then put it on the stone on the arm and adjust until it’s your angle you want. Easy peasy.

I think the Hogue Doug Ritter knocks Benchmade out of the park. Both in price and material choice. I mean, you get a deep carry clip, 20CV steel, and 3D milled G10 on their standard model for $170. Pretty hard to beat that.

At this point, the only reason to buy Benchmade is to support the brand, if you're a fan of their previous stuff. I never got into Benchmade before their prices got ridiculous, so there's no way I'm buying their stuff when there are so many more affordable blades with better specs.

Except their 20CV is soft like butter. To be fair, most all production 20CV, M390, CTS204P steel is too soft. If it isn’t at least 61HRC, and frankly 62-64, it offers little to no advantage over S30V.

I'm a fan of Benchmade, though I only own a few. I'm not a knife enthusiast either so I chose one for my edc and it's the one I've stuck(heh) with. Years ago I bought a Mini-Osborne in fluorescent orange from Cabela's, as it looked like a color I wouldn't lose if I dropped it while camping. Turns out it's way easier to lose your favorite knife to the TSA when you're late for your flight than it is to lose it while camping. So, I ordered a new custom built straight from Benchmade, including the penis clip. Still my favorite even though I have the other Benchmade knives and other brands. Although I have several full sized folders, the mini has fit me the best.

Oh yeah . This with some applied weapon tech scales is legit nutn 👍. For an upscaled version . They’re a little pricey with bm tax but you pay for the cs up front if needed .for an American made classic . They’re light , thin design , good blade steel , . A good Chinese one is a cmb predator for $55-$60 , real good one for an option . Benchmades and spyderco s 👍

I’m waiting on the 748 Narrows to drop in June from benchmade. I have a 60% off code for competing the BM Boot Camo program. The 748 is pricey at $580, but with the discount, it will be about $250 which I feel is the appropriate price.

Interesting how 6 months later the price has already gone from $162 to $180 on BHQ. And checking today the full size Griptilian is $40 less. I would probably rather have S30V than D2.

I think that Benchmade knives are cool. But I don't trust pocket knives with Omega springs. I have heard of Omega springs breaking.

Hey Nutn, just wanted to drop a thank you for posting this review. I know that this type of content sometimes struggles for engagement with the audience, but I love these old school TNP reviews. That being said, $180 for an injection-molded plastic knife with CPM-D2 steel? Benchmade has lost its mind. This thing looks like it should come as the toy in a Happy Meal. Thank God they don't own the exclusive rights to the crossbar-style lock anymore, meaning there are better, more affordable options.

I'm not a steel nerd and I know cpm makes a good D2, but can't they make it in another steel? I hate coated or black blades. Love the look of the handle though.

Benchmade almost never makes a knife using non-stainless tool steel without coating the blade. Also, the knife is black class and all black class are coated because tactical. Yeah, I know it sucks, but…..Benchmade.

That particular knife looks Dorky to me. I’ll keep moving forward with Spyderco. I put down my Osborne after many years when Benchmade decided to cut up guns on their bandsaw. Benchmade and Anheuser Busch are not for me. Thanks For The Video!

My gripe, too much belly, not enough pointy. If it used the exact same blade as the Claymore, then I would be more interested. AWT does make some insane scales for this, as all their Archon series scales are just thru the roof quality. I do like the clip, although I’ve never understood the whole obsession with deep carry clips. The edge you can get with the CPM-D2 is fantastic, holds it fairly and is a tough steel.

I don't like Axis Lock and the plastic handle on an expensive knife. The skeletonised handle inside suggests the wrap around green back plate is there to prevent the knife from falling apart during even medium duty tasks. Too expensive for what it is. Thanks for the review, it was helpful.

I tend to just buy the $10 to $15 chinese copies of these knives in D2, right there on bladeHQ. They are just as good, except you have to sharpen them a little more often. So for 1/10th the price, I can get 90% the same knife. So I tend to buy 3 or 4 of them, and use one regularly and save the others, thinking I'll use it when the first one breaks, but it never does.
