Definitely more cost intensive but imagine that handle in aluminum with a g10 or micarta strap/turtle shell. That would really elevate this design.

You aren't kidding about the steel. I pre-ordered this knife in March, for three reasons: One, I thought it looked very handsome. Two, I felt the handle design on this would solve many of the problems I have with the Griptilian. Three, I knew Benchmade's D2 was so well done that it's beaten their less well done S30V in tests before, blowing away normal Chinese D2, and I was excited to see what they would do for the CPM version. I can tell you: One, it's even more handsome in person. Two, it does indeed solve my issues with the Griptilain. More nimble and reposotionable in the hand, better balanced, better blade orientation from the handle. They're really nothing alike, actually. But Three, this blade. First, it's thinner than two of my Spydercos at the edge. It's THIN. Very unusual in a Benchmade. And this steel is FUN for a sharpener, and great to use. It reminds me of 1095 in terms of the kind of grabby-fine edge it takes. Much smoother than S30V can get. It's so refined, yet initiates a cut so easily. Not glassy, not gritty. It's so stable that it strops back on plain jeans fabric. You can splice a hair, slice paper towel, then cut cardboard, wipe it on your pants leg, and splice hair and slice paper towel again. I'd love to try a G10/Cruwear version of this, just because the Adamas Cruwear has been so well reviewed, and it would be another great choice for a coated blade this thinly ground.

I personally love this knife. I work in a warehouse opening boxes all day, and this has been my main workhorse for the past 6 months, everyday, and probably close to 100 boxes a day, along with other tasks it probably shouldn’t be put through. The CPM-D2 has held up great, and overall this knife is just a tank

Very well done review. Few comments after owing a Redoubt for a week. Frankly it did look good to me on line. In person at the local gun shop was impressed. Thought about it overnight and back to bay next day. I have traditional knives not looking for another. Modern materials utilitarian construction is an advantage. What really sold me are the ergonomics. Feel in the hand excellent. Operation smooth and precise. Weight optional too, large knife not too heavy. Deep drop clips are all I will use and it’s a good one. True the grip is textured under clip but soon learned to lift the clip a bit allowing easy insert. Drawing it’s not a problem. Particularly nice is the oversize offset lanyard hole. Easy to braid paracord short fob. Offset keeps it away from the blades action. Blade shape is perfect. Sum up its functional in every way, as a tool should be .

For me this knife rises above its (seemingly) subpar materials with a great design. the action is impeccable and razor sharp from benchmade. One of the best hard use utility knives I have and my new favorite carry

Just got mine today (08/28/2023). Says 'first production' on the blade. Great slicer. Pivot is still tight but it seemingly already wants to drop once you release the axis lock. The handle feels cheap but I love the contour. I think I'm going to enjoy carrying this blade.

Well I just picked one up today. It fits perfect in my hand. I like the new green insert on the knife. Feels like an upscale Griptillian version. Mine said first production on blade. I think blade should have been sharper from factory. This box was sealed at store. I guess I will see how good CPM D2 really is. Thanks Mr Fowler

Trouble with a more premium material is, this knife is perfectly, PERFECTLY balanced with grivory molded to be skeletonized as possible. G10 would tilt that weight WAY back, and ruin the nimbleness I'm loving so much about it so far. I think the grivory is part of what's making this knife work.

Went with the Ritter/hogue instead with the G mascus and 20CV blade. I bought after watching your review of the Redoubt. Thank you for review MC. If Benchmade would of done G10 on it or Micarta they would of had my money.

I just got mine and I'm inspecting it as I watch along with you. Even knowing the measurements it's a bigger in person. The green grivory with the bumps I'm not a big fan of but again I knew it was already like that, but worth it for me. The cpm D2 is really sharp, blade is centered axis lock is smooth. I got mine from SMKW, it shows first production run on the blade in the picture on the sight, but mine didn't, and that really sucked, but I'm over it. The pocket clip sitting on the bumps will probably tear up your pockets after a while. Thats really my only complaints. I have a proTech with cpm D2 and it works just fine. All in All, I'm happy with it

I think I like this knife....that gravel looking blade coating is cool. I honestly dont have a problem with D2, let alone cpm d2. Plastic handles....not my favorite, but I understand that its not "nice" knife, its a harder user knife. I think I like it.....knives with good drop points and good sharpening choils/cut away really get me.

I see this as a great knife to have in my pocket when I go fishing. Full size, light weight,, and plenty of grip even with wet hands. I agree however, there should be a smooth surface in the clip area. Hoping to pick one up soon.

I have had the chance to handle one. Not a fan. feels cheep, and like the buyout feels cheap but the bugout has a good feel. the scales are sharp. grip it hard, it’s painful. in the pocket, it catches oddly. the bottom of the scales, about where the pocket clip is but on the bottom of it is genuinely painful to put pressure on. the green scales also are painful. ergonomics seem pretty good but i haven’t done enough handling to give a good idea of how it feels after a long time of use.

Just took mine apart. It had a lot of lock rock. It was the screws holding the partial liners. I'm really leery about taking apart Benchmade knives especially after I totally stripped a t6 screw on my 940-2. It was the last screw and I was very careful but as I started to twist, my t6 bit suddenly spun. When I checked, the teeth on top of the screw was gone. My Redoubt isn't drop-shut unlike my 551 Grip. I have to snap-close it but it's smooth so I guess it's production tolerances.

I sent in my 940 for new omega springs, and a new blade. And ive been struggling to find a replacement while it's gone. I have the Aluminum Bugout, but it doesn't feel right in my hands. I tried a QSP Penguin, didnt like that, tried a cheap Smith & Wesson, nope. I went into a gun store yesterday and was looking around, was checking out the Griptillians. And then I seen a Benchmade I haven't seen before. The Presidio 2. Black on Black, withe a serrated mix blade. Checked it out, I love it. It was up there for a while, the knife had no oil. Dropped a couple drops in. Its so smooth now. In 1 day, it became a favorite. Larger knife, but built like a tank while still being under 5 Oz. Still cant wait to get my 940 back though. The Presidio 2 was an interesting find though. Built like a tank, CPM- S30V, for $149. Thats not bad at all.

I got the mini presidio 2 for 90 on a forum. They usually sell for 100 give or take lightly used. Underappreciated knife which is strange because ive wanted one since the first gen presidio came out.

I LOVE that blade profile and grind! And I like the handle profile and color but I'm not in love with the wrap over traction insert. I'm sure it works but I'm not loving the looks. Overall though I think I might have to have one. Oui really loik that knoif!

Damn no Liners and a Pimped up Griptilian. I was hoping for a Beast at 200 plus bucks. I do have an old Adamas in cpmD2 and it’s hard as F**K to sharpen but holds an edge like nothing else I own. I like this Redoubt though a lot better than the Griptilian and Bugout. The Barrage is about as good as it gets for under 200 bucks. Great Review

The handle feels a bit sharp without gloves. I lightly sanded the bottom and it feels like Griptilian now! Great knife

I LOVE the handle materia and the knifel!!! Its manufactured amazing, the metal liner inside support at the tip at least one inch. The Grivory material looks in real very noble for me. 100x better than stupid G10! The blade steel is great. The blade shape amazing. Sits very good in the hand with every possible grip you can think about. - Benchmade makes knifes for people that use them, very well thougth. I hope the will never obay to all that internet steel-stats fetishists putting their knife in a display and never use them.

D2 needs to sue China and get its good name back. The number of people I’ve seen go “mehhhh, D2” for this knife is staggering. D2 is a great steel when done right in INGOT form for godsake…nevermind CPM D2 from a manufacturer with a reputation for using well treated steels. If anything, CPM D2 is the most compelling thing about this model…for me at least…

@@SenecaSerpent You see a steel that’s “barely as tough as m4 with worse edge retention” instead of looking at it like an XHP type CPM tool steel that’s about as tough as m4 with good edge stability…also, you can sharpen it on any abrasive. If you dwell on the weakness, you can make any steel sound bad…ready? Cruwear barely has the edge retention of s30v *and* it’s less stainless. See?

Suprisingly, i had a green thorn hation clone in D2 that held its edge like crazy. But a SOG terminous that had meh edge retention, both reprofiled to 30 degrees and sharpened multiple times on 1000 grit KING and stropped on green compound.. Luvthemknives got a GT neon in from testing and the D2 was real and at 61 rockwell. The SOG is probably 57-59

The grip seems to look cheap. Sorry green vinyl looking stuff looks like it was made by rubbermaid. The clip extends beyond the end of the knife which is super uncomfortable with a smaller knife. Price is $185 or whatever. Is this a collaborative piece, Rubbermaid and Benchmade.

I admit the price tag isn't that offensive. But I also hate axis locks. I think they are ostentatious and eventually everyone that swears by access locks is going to switch back to liner locks and admit it is much better to simply rotate the knife a quarter turn to thumb over the liner lock and close the blade either with your forefinger or against your leg or whatever. If all new knives eventually go to access locks I will only carry antique knives.
