What I gathered from Doug's description of his own experience: He was never submitted to any pastoral authority and was skipping around from church to church. He was looking for a way that he could be just "a little bit better" than all the different pastors where he attended. They weren't prepared and didn't know how to answer his questions about the sabbath. He was left with the delusion that he found a way he can be "more pleasing to God" by going to church on Saturday and he found his way into a delusional cult that teaches the same thing. His entire experience is based off his own works and how "great" he is, not the grace found in true faith in Jesus. What I don't understand is how can he say with a straight face that there is no teaching about the change of the sabbath in the Bible? There are entire chapters of the new testament that deal specifically with how keeping the sabbath is not part of the new covenant: Romans 14, Colossians 2, Hebrews 4. The entire book of Galatians teaches that we are not under the law. Not to mention Jesus breaking the sabbath rules over and over. The fulfillment of rest (that is, the sabbath) through Jesus is literally a recurring theme of the entire New Testament from the Gospels, through Acts, and into the Epistles.

Tradition is of no value, Doug? Then I guess we can throw out the tradition of believing Ellen White is a true prophet and carried the spirit of Prophecy, right? And I love hearing people like SDAs saying "that's not what we believe" or "what I believe!" not really knowing or caring what their church authorities are actually teaching.

We believe the Old Testament regulations governing Sabbath observances are ceremonial, not moral, aspects of the law. As such, they are no longer in force, but have passed away along with the sacrificial system, the Levitical priesthood, and all other aspects of Moses' law that prefigured Christ. Here are the reasons we hold this view. 1. In Colossians 2:16-17, Paul explicitly refers to the Sabbath as a shadow of Christ, which is no longer binding since the substance (Christ) has come. It is quite clear in those verses that the weekly Sabbath is in view. The phrase "a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day" refers to the annual, monthly, and weekly holy days of the Jewish calendar (cf. 1 Chronicles 23:31; 2 Chronicles 2:4; 31:3; Ezekiel 45:17; Hosea 2:11). If Paul were referring to special ceremonial dates of rest in that passage, why would he have used the word "Sabbath?" He had already mentioned the ceremonial dates when he spoke of festivals and new moons. 2. The Sabbath was the sign to Israel of the Mosaic Covenant (Exodus 31:16-17; Ezekiel 20:12; Nehemiah 9:14). Since we are now under the New Covenant (Hebrews 8 ), we are no longer required to observe the sign of the Mosaic Covenant. 3. The New Testament never commands Christians to observe the Sabbath. 4. In our only glimpse of an early church worship service in the New Testament, the church met on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). 5. Nowhere in the Old Testament are the Gentile nations commanded to observe the Sabbath or condemned for failing to do so. That is certainly strange if Sabbath observance were meant to be an eternal moral principle. 6. There is no evidence in the Bible of anyone keeping the Sabbath before the time of Moses, nor are there any commands in the Bible to keep the Sabbath before the giving of the law at Mt. Sinai. 7. When the Apostles met at the Jerusalem council (Acts 15), they did not impose Sabbath keeping on the Gentile believers. 8. The apostle Paul warned the Gentiles about many different sins in his epistles, but breaking the Sabbath was never one of them. 9. In Galatians 4:10-11, Paul rebukes the Galatians for thinking God expected them to observe special days (including the Sabbath). 10. In Romans 14:5, Paul forbids those who observe the Sabbath (these were no doubt Jewish believers) to condemn those who do not (Gentile believers). 11. The early church fathers, from Ignatius to Augustine, taught that the Old Testament Sabbath had been abolished and that the first day of the week (Sunday) was the day when Christians should meet for worship (contrary to the claim of many seventh-day sabbatarians who claim that Sunday worship was not instituted until the fourth century). 12. Sunday has not replaced Saturday as the Sabbath. Rather the Lord's Day is a time when believers gather to commemorate His resurrection, which occurred on the first day of the week. Every day to the believer is one of Sabbath rest, since we have ceased from our spiritual labor and are resting in the salvation of the Lord (Hebrews 4:9-11). www.gty.org/.../are-the-sabbath-laws-binding-on...

12 points well expressed that deserve a point-by-point refutation if someone sees differently. Looking back as a former SDA, I do wish there had been more thoughtful study on the full sabbath picture in the Bible - climaxing in the “Sabbatismos” of Hebrews 4 - which I eventually took the opportunity to do at seminary (using just the Bible, and not EGW.) Nothing wrong with attending church on the Israelite sabbath day, or observing the sabbath day of atonement (“a perpetual commandment for all generations,” Lev 23) if one’s conscience dictates (Rom 14), but beware God’s curses if the emphasis on law is sufficient to trample on the grace of God (Heb 10) and invoke His curses (Gal1,3), or if one ends up using the law to accuse Christ’s bride, since that is of the devil (Rev 12). “Sabbatismos” is what believers must strive to attain spiritually in the context of the New Covenant we are under for continuous and everlasting Sabbath rest in Christ. This is rendered difficult/impossible when the Veil of the Mosaic Law (2 Cor 3) is invoked and the temporary shadow (law/Sabbath day) remains stronger than the eternal substance (Christ/Sabbath Lord). Interesting tidbit BTW - while SDA associates “the change of times and law” with Christians gathering on the Lord’s Day and the devil, it does not consider in the same way its’ own changing of “times and law” as to when the Sabbath day starts/ends (fixed 6pm Fri to 6pm Sat, then fluid sunset Fri to sunset Sat). Thankfully, no Christian accuses SDA of apostasy for that 😊 Blessings to all, keep the faith ✌🏻

1. How can the seventh day sabbath be a shadow? The sabbath of the seventh day was instituted For the benefit of men before sin came into the world. The institution of the sabbath had nothing to do with salvation so it cannot be a shadow. 2. The sabbath was a sign of Gods covenant made with Israel at Sinai. This covenant was none other than the preceding covenants. It promised righteousness by faith. It was not thus received by the people who responded not by faith but by their own promise to obey God.(Ex. 19:8). The promise of the people is called the old covenant. Paul called it ‘faulty’ (Hebr. 8). God is perfect and His Law is perfect (Rom 7:12, 14; Psalm 19). So the ‘faulty’ does not refer to Gods promise neither to His law. The old covenant (the faulty promise of the people) put them under the law; under full obligation to obey the law in their own strength. This resulted in being under the dominion of sin (Rom 6:14). God intended them to keep the sabbath as a sign of their faith in hIs creative and redemptive power by which they would be enabled to live the covenant relationship expressed in the ten commandments; a relationship of love to God and men. 3. The NT commands to keep Gods Law. 4. The first day of the week started after sunset on the evening of the sabbath when the disciples prepared a meal because they were hungry. During this first day Paul worked hard. He preached during the night and went on his journey at sunrise. 5. Read Matt. 28:20. Jesus taught the disciples to keep His commandments (Christ is the lawgiver who spoke the ten words on Mt Sinai). There was never any contention between Jews and Christians concerning the sabbath. This is a convincing proof for the fact that Christians kept the sabbath. 6. Read Ex. 16 it was forbidden to gather or prepare manna on the sabbath day. God made the seventh day holy meaning He set it apart for a special purpose. he blessed this period of time. Why would He wait for thousands of years to tell men what He had done for them,at creation? Makes no sense. 7. They did not had to because it was a fundamental teaching. (Matt 28:20). 8. Paul taught them to keep the commandments. (Rom 6, Rom 8:4 and Ezk 36:25-27) 9. He is talking about shadows. The 7th day is not a shadow. (See 1.) 10. That is what you are reading into the text. 11. Stay with the Bible. 12. Resurrection is commemorated by baptism. The cross exceeds the resurrection day in importance. Why not celebrate friday?

▸ Keeping the sabbath was part of the law that Christ took away. “He . . . canceled out the certificate of death consisting of decrees against us . . .; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ” (Colossians 2:14-17). Christians are no more obligated to keep the sabbath than the other Old Testament festivals or its food and drink regulations! In fact, we are warned against going back to the Law to justify our practices. To do so severs us from Christ (Galatians 5:1-4).

@Richie2011Mr SABBATH LAW - TO WHOM GIVEN - Moses' words, "It was not with our fathers that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today." Deuteronomy 5:1-3, 12-15 - God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai. These laws were not given to everyone! They were meant only for Israel Exodus 20:8-11 - God gave Israel a sign between them because He brought them out of Egypt. Ezekiel 20:10-12 - God made known to Israel His laws through Moses. This included the Sabbath. Nehemiah 9:12-14 - Therefore, we conclude that the Sabbath observance, which was a part of the Law of Moses, was only given to Israel. It was never given to any other people.

Fearful is the issue to which the world is to be brought. The powers of earth, uniting to war against the commandments of God, will decree that “all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond” (Revelation 13:16), shall conform to the customs of the church by the observance of the false sabbath. All who refuse compliance will be visited with civil penalties, and it will finally be declared that they are deserving of death. On the other hand, the law of God enjoining the Creator's rest day demands obedience and threatens wrath against all who transgress its precepts. GC 604.2 With the issue thus clearly brought before him, whoever shall trample upon God's law to obey a human enactment receives the mark of the beast; he accepts the sign of allegiance to the power which he chooses to obey instead of God. The warning from heaven is: “If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation.” Revelation 14:9, 10. The Laws of the Mosaic Covenant are fulfilled in Christ - The Law and the Sabbath were pointing to Christ, it was a shadow of what was to come, and not the substance (Colossians 2:16-17). Jesus said that He came not to abolish the law but to fulfill the law (Matthew 5:17). In fulfilling the law, He completed the law. How did He do this? Jesus fulfilled the Law by obeying the law perfectly and by completing the sacrificial system. Jesus saves to the uttermost! In what way can we offer one more sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins? Jesus pronouncement, “It is finished,” signified the completion and fulfillment of the law.

@@pdub332 The Old Law is aptly referred to as handwritten because when Moses first received the law, he wrote it out for the people. "Then Moses came and recounted to the people all the words of the LORD and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice and said, "All the words which the LORD has spoken we will do!" Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD" (Exodus 24:3-4). Even the Ten Commandments, the prelude to the Law, were initially written by God on tablets of stone. "When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God" (Exodus 31:18). The Law of Moses was not an oral tradition passed down through the generations. It was a handwritten code of law.

The conclusion is that they should not get pulled back into following Old Testament practices because they were only temporary -- mere shadows of the truth that is in Jesus Christ. Paul isn't calling the Old Law empty traditions and philosophies of men. He is calling the teachings of those advocating following a law that God had canceled empty traditions and philosophies of men. This should not be surprising, Jesus himself told the Jews similar things (Matthew 15:1-9).@pdub332

According to Gal.3:15 and Heb.9:15-17 Christs' covenant with mankind had to be changed before it's ratification by His death, afterward, any change is disqualified. You have to show where He said " after my death you must keep the day of my resurrection holy as a memorial". The incident you cite where he told the man to carry his bed on the Sabbath is not a violation of the moral law but an ignoring of a manmade regulation. In fact, all of the supposed times Jesus " violated" the law were of the same nature. 1Jn.3:4 says that" sin is the transgression of the law." You would have Jesus to be a sinner! I would remind you of Matt.12:36,37 "But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the judgment. @pdub332 I have created a new thread saved scrolling down 120 replies 😅 Replying to the Galatians and Corinthians Question. It seems that the teachings of Galatians and Corinthians you follow may not come from the Holy Spirit but rather from a particular interpretation of the Bible. This perspective might be influencing how you understand the New Testament. The infallible interpreter supported William Miller's views on Christ's return, leading many to sell their possessions, which caused a lot of confusion. People guided by the Holy Spirit warned against this by citing scripture, reminding others that no one knows the hour! Unfortunately, those warnings were overlooked. Today, individuals inspired by the Holy Spirit continue to reference scripture, especially in response to criticism about Sabbath observance, emphasizing Colossians 2:16. However, the leaders of that denomination insist that this verse doesn’t refer to a weekly Sabbath.

As Jesus himself said the sabbath was made for men, not men for the sabbath. If the electricity or the heat of their homes stops working in the middle of the winter on the sabbath day, will they refuse to call on a company to get it fixed on the the sabbath day, so according to them, God would rather have you be in the dark and freeze to death in the middle of the winter in keeping of (his) sabbath law. @@AmegoTV23 You said: "Making excueses to disregard God's commandments for personal gain or relying on human understanding reflects the character of God's enemy." My answer: So stop making excuses, stop disregarding God's commandments by judging others over their diets and the days they do or don't observe and stop being God's enemy! You said: "The Sabbath was instituted at creation. an additional special 7th day creation." My answer: That's 100% false. The "Sabbath" was NEVER instituted until God commanded the 12 tribes of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai, and even then it was only instituted for the 12 tribes of Israel, not to non-Israelites. In addition, the "Sabbath", like the rest of the Law of Moses, was merely a shadow, fullfilled and nailed to the cross with Christ (Colossians 2:8-19) and no longer applies even to Israelites. You said: " It is a sign of your relationship and loyalty to God. And the enemy despises this, which is why he introduced an alternative day of worship and attempted to alter the Ten Commandments." My answer: Bull feathers. It is a sign that you despise the Cross of Christ and trample upon His righteousness, and spit upon His perfect fulfillment of the Law, and a sign of your arrogance in your own abilities. By binding yourself to commandments that were never given to you, and haven't been in effect for the past two millennia, you are telling Jesus "Your sacrifice isn't good enough! I have to prove that I am better than You and puff myself up like a Pharisee, so I can judge others who don't do what I do!" The sabbath isn’t just rooted in creation, tough guy, it’s also rooted in redemption (Deuteronomy 5:12-16) and this is actually one of my central objections to the truncated sabbatarianism of Adventism if you’d actually bother to listen to me on the subject and not viscerally respond. If you think Jesus said nothing about this then you evidence you don’t even understand the foundation and bedrock of the incarnation and the Christian faith. Which is to be expected, unfortunately, if you’re an Adventist, because new creation is what the entire Christian faith is about. New creation is a term that’s synonymous with redemption. Redemption was accomplished in total on the resurrection day. But it was not APPLIED in full on the resurrection day. The new creation is here but what Christ accomplished has not been applied in full yet. Resurrection, curse lifted off creation, etc. all things that come in the future. But Jesus is already presently making all things new (Rev. 21:5) by applying what he accomplished in full 2000 years ago. The new creation is underway and the Christian is in it by way of being born again. My advice would be to study the difference between redemption accomplished versus redemption applied.

Thank you for the response. I’m still a little confused. In Isaiah 58:13 The Lord says the sabbath (the 7th day) is the Lords day. And Malachi 3:6 says the Lords never changes. And how do we make sense of Isaiah 66:23? And in regards to Sunday being the new creation because Christ rose on Sunday. From my understanding Christ is just fulfilling the Sanctuary feast. Christ is our Passover lamb which is why he died on 14th days of the 1st month, and he’s also the first fruits of those raised from the dead so he’s fulfilling the feast of the first fruits which was on the 16th day of the 1st month (Leviticus 23:10-11,and 1 Corinthians 15:20), which could have been on any day like how Christmas can be on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday…ect. I’m having trouble finding anywhere in scripture where The Lord blesses the first day of the week and makes it holy. And I believe as Christians everything we practice should be found in the word of God (Matthew 4:4) I believe tradition is any man made practice that can not be found in the word of God. What do you think?

Sadly many Christians that abandoned (and for good reason I might add) the SDA church, end up also abandoning and rejecting the 4th commandment just because of their bad experience with all the fanstics inside the SDA church, but the truth is the "change" in sabbath observance does not come from the Bible, but from human traditions. First day worship based of Jesus resurrection it's a beautiful tradition, and I'm all for it, but is nothing more than that.
@answeringadventism
@answeringadventism Ай бұрын
Incorrect. I don’t reject the 4th commandment. And the Christian sabbath position isn’t a “tradition of men” unless by “men” you mean the apostles. Copious works exist on the subject and have for nearly 2000 years at this point. It isn’t “based on Jesus resurrection.” This is a truncated understanding. The resurrection day was the day Jesus entered His rest AFTER accomplishing redemption. Redemption was a creative act of God. The sabbath is rooted in creation (Genesis 1), rest (Genesis 1; Deuteronomy 5), and redemption (Deuteronomy 5). God in the original creation did a mighty work, accomplished that work, and entered his rest the seventh day. God in Christ, in the new creation (the redemption of all things) also did a mighty miraculous work and accomplished it in full. He also entered His rest, but not on the seventh day. He entered the first. The resurrection day was when it was accomplished. Paul hinges the accomplishment of redemption on the resurrection. The sabbath day memorializes when God entered His rest. Sabbath means rest. In the old creation it was the seventh day. But in the new creation it’s the first day. God in Christ entered his rest the first day in the new creation. We aren’t in the old creation anymore. So the heart of the sabbath is about Jesus and His accomplishment of redemption where He redeemed the fallen creation as the Second Adam. That’s the root of the sabbath-the gospel. So to say it’s “based on the resurrection” is not precise enough because it’s more than that. And what I described above is biblical. It’s what Hebrews 4 is saying. I’ve shown this I don’t even know how many times at this point and have yet to hear a better exegesis from those that disagree.

@answeringadventism beautiful rationalization indeed. Beautiful apologetics for something that doesn't really have Biblical support. Like I said, I don't judge you or anyone else for reinterpreting the 4th commandment, it's a beautiful reinterpretation, but nothing more than that. We Christians are famous for our mental and theological gymnastics and for our ability for reinterpreting things according to our dogmas. At least the SDA is consistent with the Bible on the literal meaning of Exodus 20:8 (but I have to admit they also totally distort the true meaning of the Sabbath) but mainstream Christianity has reinterpreted a commandment who didn't need any kind of reinterpretation. We are indeed a new creation thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ, should we need to change His law because of that? Not at all. Should beautiful traditions based on beautiful interpretations replace what God's has plainly stated, personally I don't think so. 7th and 1st day worship should coexist in my opinion. Thanks for you answer.

Those are all commandments of God found in the Bible. The fact that they were specific commandments given to other people in another time and were never given to you is completely irrelevant since you clearly treat all God's commandments as applying to all people in all times. The same is true of the Law of Moses, which was given exclusively to the Israelites (there is zero record of God commanding anyone else to keep any "Sabbath", from Adam to anyone else before Moses on Mount Sinai, and never to any Gentiles at all). Even the Israelites were only given the Law until the New Covenant was given with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. If "Sabbath keeping" was of such paramount importance, it's funny that it was never mentioned in the list of guidelines the Apostles had sent to Gentile believers after discussing the issues of the Law of Moses in Acts 15. Under the New Covenant, there is no obligation to keep any day or not keep any day, as shown in Romans 14 and Colossians 2.
