SS is not a stoplight drag car. That’s the Dodge. The SS is actually a road course/winding road car. It beat the Hellcat around Willow Springs. Road & Track rightfully compared it to the E39 M5. Then Motor Trend went and did the same thing in a video... calling it the new benchmark sport sedan. If you think it’s merely an American drag car, you don’t know the SS very well at all.

i don't know what you guys are smoking, but the chevy ss is basically an australian family car. here in australia, the holden commodore was predominately manufactured here as 6 cyl family car since 1979 and this is the last evolution of the commodore. it's a model that what has been successful here since 1979 and thats what australians wanted and yes it was also offered in wagon version as well and in later years as a ute as well as sport V8 versions as well and that was a recipe that worked well for alot of australian families. but mostly when you see the car on the road , its most commonly in a 6 cyl auto format. and when you say the car is a failure, please take into consideration the size of the australian population of 23 million people that was what the original plant was designed to cater for, and the population of the US of over 300 million. the factory here is an old plant and not all that big compared to big international car brands that have plants all over the world building the same car. I myself ordered a new VF commodore ss ute early last year and i had to wait 5 months for it because the demand here is very high for them. so there was a great deal of backlog orders to fill as well as the plant to squeeze in building batches of export cars into the schedule. if you also did your homework about why they are closing the plant down is basically, the cost of production in australia become to high and non feasible to continue, mainly union issues eba agreements and other contributing govt related factors. australia is not a third world country and the cost of labour is high as people do not have to work for tips as in some career choices in the states. there may have been some contractional agreement to provide x amount of vehicles to the export market for a number of different reasons. market testing for future models etc etc. so back to my point, I believe you maybe trying to dissect this story of the rebadged holden commdore to a chevy ss a little too much. the US version is a great car and thats you guys see. You are not taking into consideration the origins of the model as a 6 cyl australian family car nor the the bullshit politics going on in the background between GM and the factory and the Aust govt leading up to the factorys demise as well as the home grown Aussie commodore. I believe the SS for the US market was not designed as a sleeper as much. It was most likely destined for the very same reason as it was here as the Commodore SS and Commodore SS Redline. It is catered for the family guy that wants a little bit more performance than whats offered or targeted at family commuting. for example, a 4 door sedan that can perform well in all conditions and as well with the sound and grunt of a V8 engine. As other sports cars offered in the US are likely to be in a 2 door version format not making them too practical for family use. So the SS is kind of a allrounder without the husband harping onto the wife about buying his own 2 door camaro, corvette , mustang or hellcat thats only going to have limited use in a family scenario thus using up funds in a household that has many ongoing expenses. its that simple, so if theres extra funds in the family budget for sports car, then get your corvette or your mustang , if not get a SS. simple. so thats my rant. thanks for reading this far, cheers

100% Correct even without paragraphs and spacing. This is a VF Holden Commodore and is exactly the same car underneath the body panels as a Camaro, as the Camaro was built on the same VF platform (chassis wise) which was designed and built in Australia with this in mind.

The SS was not a failure. It did what it was supposed to do. GM had a contract with Holden to import a certain amount of cars to be sold as the Pontiac G8. Once Pontiac went belly up the and the G8 went away the contract was not fully fulfilled as they didn't import enough cars. GM created the Chevy SS to import enough cars fulfill the contract. That is why they didn't market the car or advertise the SS. It was created to bring enough cars to complete the contract GM had with Holden. There was no incentive to sell this car in big numbers. GM's marketing/promoting was so bad when I was shopping for my SS half the Chevy dealer salesmen I dealt with didn't even know what the SS Sedan was.

Wayne M dude, I know. And for the record, I am a fan of the SS. I am also an old school 96 Impala SS fanatic. To us Impala SS guys, the Chevy SS means something else. We want Chevy to try harder and get back to its muscle car roots. The only reason I use Dodge as a comparison is because they are proof that the market exists.

Hey, I liked your review, but I thought I would make some points clear as I have my own views: 1) I live in Australia and I work at one of the Holden dealerships. I own a Holden Commodore SS-V Redline in Light My Fire orange (or Chevy SS Orange Blast Metallic) and I am proud to own one. Listening to people repeatedly stating the car was a failure, makes me cringe a little. The Holden Commodore sold well for 40 years, but due to Government issues and cutbacks, the GFC, and GM USA only importing approx 3000 per year due to tariffs to protect their local manufacturing, well GM USA decided to close local manufacturing in Australia in 2013. The last VF Holden Commodore or Chevy SS was the best one they had built, but GM USA chose to only import 3000 per year. This number was decided way before they chose to stop manufacturing of the Holden Commodore. 2) Naming it just SS seems to be the biggest controversy. SS = Sports Sedan. It's not a muscle car as I have been told that the name was used in the 60s and 70s, but the SS is not a muscle car (watch some other KZbin videos and read some forums - their words not mine.) Maybe it should have been MC = Muscle Car? Nah.. 3) The variants could have been a little broader. In Australia, we have these variants in the VF Commodore range: -- Sedans - Evoke (V6), SV6 (V6), SS (V8), SS-V (V8; dropped for 2017 model), SS-V Redline (V8), Calais (V6/V8), Calais-V (V6/V8) = 9 variants -- Wagons (Sportwagon) - All the above in a wagon variant = 9 variants -- Ute or utility - SV6 (V6), SS-V Redline (V8) = 2 variants -- Caprice (V6/V8) = 2 variants -- HSV or Holden Special Vehicles - Clubsport, R8, Grange, Maloo, Senator = 5 variants = Total 27 variants -- these are the common everyday production variants, and this does not include all the special and limited editions both Holden and HSV produced -- Chevy SS (V8) = 1 variant 4) I agree the styling may be a little bland or Malibu-ish, but the styling of the Redline and HSV variants with the various colours made the car stand out. It was a bit unfair to state that the styling of 2018 was a little out, as the styling was complete way back in 2012 for release of the Chevy SS in the NASCAR and release of the production car itself in 2013. This car is based on the GM Zeta platform which was first designed in 1999 and released with the VE Commodore (Chevy G8) and VF Commodore (Chevy SS), and to redevelop a new platform would cost a $1B+ and I think the writing was on the wall after the GFC circa 2009 and the final announcement of the manufacturing closure in 2013 (read wiki "GM Zeta platform".) There, I said my bit. I think you summed it up at the end with your comment, "It failed because of Chevy, not because of the car." As far as I have read and seen on KZbin, there was little to no advertising of the Chevy SS at all. Not many of the Chevy dealers knew much about them. In Australia, there has been no advertising of any Commodores for the past few years, as people knew about the brand and model and Holden focussed on advertising their other models. The supply for 2016 and 2017 Commodores were limited, and the demand was always there. So onto the next Commodore which will be released Feb 2018 and will be solely imported and not locally manufactured. So no more Commodore V8s :-( I will be posting some videos of my car soon.. but I had been saying that for a while..

The ss is a sports sedan that dispite its size can still handle the windy roads like a champ. Performance wise this thing competes with other sports sedans from the likes of audi, BMW or Mercedes. I'm happy with my 2017. The car is more than a muscle car.

Failure? They said they would only ship over 1,000 cars for the final 2017 model year, they shipped 4,000 instead for 2017! Each year they had a certain number of cars they were shipping over, as of now all brand-new SS’s are sold. Also the “SS” was a 4-door concept car from 2001-2003!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIfRloadbtuJoqc Also, It’s much, much more refined than a GXP, the entire body/chassis was reworked to be lighter and stiffer.

Like the G8 it is a rebadged Holden Commodore from Australia. For a while Holden reintroduced the "Monaro" a 2 door sports version. In 2002 Gary Rogers Motorsport in partnership with Holden, buit the "GRM 427" the car won the Bathurst 24 hour & caught the attention of GM America when it backed up the result with a 1, 2 finish the following year. They were rebadged as "Pontiac GTO's" in America & shortly after were produced by pontiac. When Pontiac was dissolved the 2 door version disappeared

You will get people (car enthusiasts) who go out of their way (and time) to stop by and ask about this car. I have owned one for less than a couple of months and it already draws people in. Most of them think they can get a 2018- or a 2019- Model, but I educate them on what it is and when it was available {new}. It most certainly does manage to turn heads.

Great video. But the SS in its Commodore guise in Australia has always been known for its unreliability and major ongoing issues that were never acknowledged by the factory. Major issues from driveline failure, engine failure and gearbox/transmission failures have plagued the Commodore brand name for the last 20 years to the point where people just werent purchasing any Holdens just because of ongoing issues thru the entire model range. The car, in its last 10 years, just became irrelevant to the Australian population and sales severely declined. I eventually crushed my 2016 SS with an excavator rather than sell it as I didnt want someone else to inherit its problems.

The thing most people seem to miss when talking about this car...Chevrolet/GM never wanted the Chevy SS to be a big success. They were meeting an export deal they made with Holden to keep the Australian government happy. At the time the SS was introduced in the US, GM already knew they were shutting down Holden production. They car had an expiration date before it ever hit the US shores. All they wanted to do was sell the numbers they had agreed to export out of Australia.

The SS, was not suppose to be a direct competitor to the charger as far as performance, it was suppose to be more of a competitor to the 5 series BMW. Also, Gm knew they were going to shut down the holden plant in Australia and knew they had a great car being produced there, which is why they imported the previous model as the g8. The SS wasn't meant for high volume sales. After shutting down Pontiac, why let a good platform go to waste.....update it, put a chevy badge on it and sell what you can until the plant closes. For those that own either a g8 or SS, they have instant classics, being that the g8 was produced about 2 years and the SS for 4. I own an 09 g8 GT and a 14 SS. They are amazing. I still get offers from people wanting to buy either car from me.....even offers from major dealerships.

I just saw that video. At the end of the day, it's a bad ass powertrain with a lackluster design. If the SS had more style I don't think we are talking about the price. 45k is not cheap, but GM's interiors still have more quality than Chrysler's and to Doug's point it is loaded giving you a tremendous value. But Doug got what he wanted, views. I watched because of the title.

Some great comments on this vid. Urban legend(?) has it that GM had some kind of agreement with Holden that they had to dump some of the Aussie cars on the American market to try to keep Holden above water. Thus, knowing that only a few cars were available and maybe even sold at a loss, why even bother to spend marketing money on the SS? The upside? IF you want a 4 door sleeper and do not want to have Smokies giving you summons just for what your car looks like... PERSONALLY, I think the Flamboyant Metalflake LIme, Gilbert Grape and Angry Yellow Jacket paint schemes look like they were created by 6 year olds high on crystal meth. Thank G*d if cars were dumped, they were SS. So, even IF the SS was lousy (which it certainly is NOT) the low numbers mean that the SS may hold its value tenaciously, while all the used car lots in America are overflowing with Chargers, Challengers...

The V8 Holden Commodore was never intended to trick anyone. It’s just the V8 variant of an Australian family sedan. Maybe Americans can’t get their heads around that. There are sports variants of this car in Australia that are more aggressive looking and with more powerful engines including supercharged models. In Australia, the SS Commodore has been around for many years and iterations. Chevy didn't just slap on the SS badges, they were already there. Basically in Australia the Commodore is marketed as a family sedan not a sports car. With this model (VF Commodore) there is a cheap base level V6 model (Evoke), then a sportier looking version (SV6), then the SS which is the V8 version, then the more luxury Calais which has either V6 or V8 versions. From there you have the aggressive HSV variants (Clubsport, GTS) and luxury HSV variants (Grange and Senator). I believe the Chevy SS is a "frankenstein" SS Commodore with the Calais features from Australia. So don't think of the Chevy SS as a sports car, even though it has the performance. It's a family car. If you want to look at what the aggressive performance Commodores look like check out the HSV range kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHLPp4RrfdmGkLs BTW Hi from Adelaide, Australia (the home of Holden) ;)

Both you and Doug are close but not quite in your analysis about the SS and its marketing. Because the SS was built in Australia, the foreign currency exchange rates definitely came into play. The US Dollar's increasing strength made each car was made with either small profit margins or at a loss. Combine that with Holden operating in a deficit domestically, and you have a situation where the business case for this car was never going to be a mass-market or even decent volume niche market car. If I remember right, there was an agreement between GM and the Australian government to produce and/or export a certain number of cars. The number of SS sedans and Caprice fleet cars apparently met that quota. When you take these things into consideration, it's plain to see that Chevy did the bare minimum to bring this car to market in minimal numbers. Not only is it the best car Holden produced, but Chevy failed to capitalize on a car with a lot of appeal.

America is dumb ,,Ford had a huge chance to bring our Falcons in too , great car as well but wouldn't. more powerful and better in many ways than the mustang gt in stock form and with two great engines..America hates having someone else doing a muscle car better than them ..

Rodney McGiveron BINGO!!! I lived in Germany for a few year's knew a few people who worked for Ford dealerships in Germany that also holidayed in Australia being Ford guy they hired the Falcon.... a couple were big dealers in Frankfurt and apparently questioned why wasn't the made in LHD form and sold in Europe and the States.... The reply was prior to the announcement of Ford shutting down in Australia was Ford USA doesn't like the Falcon because they CANNOT build a car with the same quality as the Australian product and were worried about it taking sales from the flagship Mustang.

I think the SS is sexy.. smooth lines like a woman. Its not angry or aggressive which is totally separate from sexy.. i mean a 911 is sexy and its not aggressive on any bodyline. There's a lot of people that are embarrassed driving a car that's so loud. I think the car did what it was supposed to do and assist Holden. I am proud to own one. The styling is the Holden VF not a Chevy (it wasnt built by chevy). Look at the camaro and corvette, very aggressive. Aussie cars arent really aggressivly styled.. Holden didn't have the means or motive to export 80,000 or they would've marketed and sold 80,000... I agree and disagree with a lot of this. Love my SS. Understated and Sophisticated.

Bro you just don't get why it's here in the 1st place. It's not here to stay. Or compete. It's It's own thing. And they did it to fulfill a deal with Holden that's it. Yes the charger is nice but I see it every where I looked. So I'm OK with my boring ss with a built motor and a turbo couple of settings. 800 to 1400hp street car. And it's holding value and going up. Can't beat it. My friend got a 392 new. 1 year later he lost almost half the value with only 20k miles. 392 Daytona too.

Dude it's named the SS or Super Sport because that same spec vehicle here is the SSV, It is the highest spec Holden, the Clubsport, GTS and Senator are higher spec than the SS, but they are HSV versions. Though all are based on the Commodore S, V6 auto which sells way more cars than the HSV. It wasn't design inspired on anything American you idiots, it's styling screams Commodore and is as subtle as a sledgehammer. This video is the highest spec Commodore that HSV ever built, it's styling is a bit more aggressive than the SS, it is the GTS/R W1. It runs the LS9 from the Corvette and has a supercharger on top and it couldn't be a subtle if it tried. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZjSpJtuoNmsqKM

Some points I can agree and disagree on. Although I kind of like the sleeper aspect (not to mention the Holden badge conversion I did confuses a ton of people...”what kind of car is that?”)...I do wish they had kept up with the aggressive styling of the G8 hood in particular (considering that the SS is the newer model of the G8 in terms of being a Holden Commodore). And maybe I’m not quite a fan of those little brushed seat inserts on the driver and passenger seats. I do however have to disagree with the sales comparisons to the Charger being used as a “failure” point. Had the intent been to sell as many as possible, I’m sure there would have been different engine models (that supercharged LSA would have been beautiful), trim packages, options, MSRP...however the car couldn’t be called an SS probably. Drop a Vette motor in and call it an SS...SS? Lol! Advertising and marketing points, in relation to the fact that the intent was only to sell around 3000 units, kind of get thrown out. Spend more money advertising than you’d even make selling your limited production (or import in this case)? Bad financial move in that aspect. In terms of what the car can do...how it handles, the power, the options it has...I’d say success. I think the failure lies more in the naming of the car. Especially when given the fact that the “SS” branding is no longer iconic to big horsepower engine American muscle like an old 69 Camaro SS! Example being that they slapped that badge on a Cobalt!

Fellas you need a little education. But I do like your style. These cars were never meant to sell BIG in the USA. NEVER NEVER!! Chevrolet SS is a fucking US ICON; like Peanut butter and jelly, George Washington, Smith and Wesson, Chevrolet.....No Never. Check out Australia's V8 Supercars, these cars are made for the race track in the touring car category in Australia. Commodores had a long tradition and was as our leading production vehicle for many years. They have raced against Ford V8 production cars for years until 2013/14 when other production cars where let through the door. GM fucked Holden over for years, got Holden AUS to build a few thousand Commodores, sent them to the US as Pontiac G8s when they wanted to fuck off the Pontiac brand, just to right off some debt i suppose.(LAPD was going to buy a shit load and GM fucked Holden again closing Pontiac etc etc) Then they went and did the same again, sending a few thousand VF Commodores as Chev SS to USA simply to keep the numbers up, to keep the line running to the build of the last Commodore, through to the kill date OCT 2017 when the Aussie Holden plant closed. Ford closed over here 2016, Toyota as it happens closed also in Oct 2017. US Police departments looked at the Aussie Caprice as a cruiser for a few years... but stayed with Ford. Most were asking why back then?? It was made in Australia not the USA??????????? The car Doug baby reviews is lame to say the least. Doug baby should be wripped a new arse hole for that. Search Images for Commodore VF colour "light my fire" with black trim....Even look at VF Commodore SS RED...Doug Doug Doug, OK it was your mates car, but fuck, wrip wrip mate. Taj Check Chicago Holden Connection, they have some great cars. The Holden badged SS in their BBQ video. The Holden HSV Clubby....Looking at their vehicles the choices certainly were on the table. People who own the car are right to pissed with Doug baby..I mean he even told people how to turn the launch on without even knowing about it...if people get that wrong and simply turn of the stability control feature they will find out about it very fast. With it on the 400KWTS sticks like shit to a blanket. Without stability control you have 400KWTS on roller skates. So fellas watch this years V8 Supercars in Australia and watch some previous years...It sure beats watching the cars go arounds and around and around and around. Love a work Taj :).....and around and around and around.....

All then cars I just said they are not American cars making that clear but I’m not a holden person but I defend my Aussie cars and why they only sent that many per year is because holden Australia had to convert them two left hand drive two USA it really did well in London more then it did in USA when holden sent it to other country’s and use only got the ones I said but when it came two the Vauxhall vxr8 and so forth uk got our Australian car but got the performance models and why it was so high because the ss holden use got was over 34 grand in Australia and Australia needed two make money on it why it was that price in us

Bullshit. It had nothing to do with wages. It was that the government refused to subsidise the car makers and GM holden made crap cars. If workers having low wages is the reason for a car manufacturer to be succesful, then how come the germans have a succesful car manufacturing sector even with high taxes and high wages.

The fact that you repeated the lie that Doug Demuro started about the vents not working tells me all I need to know about how well informed y’all are about the Chevy SS. Wanna know why the Chevy SS only sold 3,000 units in one year? BECAUSE GM ONLY IMPORTED 3,000 UNITS IN ONE YEAR! 90 percent of all SS’ has been sold, that’s not a economic failure. Aesthetics would probably have changed the minds of guys with micro dicks wanted to compensate by adding a few extra millimeters to their fender flares but it wouldn’t have changed the import deal GM already had in place with Holden. The goal was never to continue to car. The car is not a American car, hence the bland engine cover. The Holden plant, just like the whole auto industry in Australia was collapsing even before the 2014 SS hit American car lots. GM never had plans to retool any shops to continue the car even after 90 percent (which is a economic success) of the SS’ shipped to the states sold.

Brock Venture Thats what i been thinking. Did Dodge or the STI or any of these other four door sedans sell 90%? So no one sells more than 90% then it's a failure? I bet any maker would be happy it sold 90% of the cars, trucks, and suv's it made with minimal to no advertising. Chevy did not design they way it looked so u cant knock them for that. Not everyone wants to scream hay look at me my car is fast. Flying under the radar is alwasy key when u got a fast car. If u want to stand out, punch it and the the world hear your sweet exhaust note.

they should have given it the lsa supercharger like the Gen F GTS got...it would have sold right there with the hellcat , chevy just needed something to fit that market and once again didn't listen to buyers...it was barely profitable im sure after the usdm changes and the transport...I mean chevy barely marketed it even less so then they did with the caprice ...not alot of people even knew about the ss unless you were already on the holden/chevy train...essentially chevy screwed it all up and used as much as they could of holden before shelving an entire nations economy.

The SS was a total failure...mainly because of GM decision to bolster the Pontiac brand with performance cars in an effort to revive the brand. The GTO, G8 GXP, and Soltice GXP were all great cars, but not great enough to the rescue Pontiac from the chopping block. GM still had to fulfill a contractual agreement with Holden. So they again rebadged the Holden from the defunct Pontiac G8 GXP, added a few bits from the Corvette parts bin and called it a Chevy SS
