Possibly the thing I appreciated most about this storyline is that it never truly went away. In a lot of shows, characters go through physically and psychologically traumatic events all the time, and after an episode or two they act like it never happened. But that’s not how real life works. In real life, you never forget something like this. It affects you forever. And I appreciate that Mark’s attack was a major factor in his behavior for several seasons after it actually happened.

I just watched a 5th season episode where some paramedics were joking with him and tied him to their backboard and he got triggered. The paramedics realized what they did and apologized, but it was a good lesson in what PTSD can look like years after a trauma. It was just a reminder to be kind to others because you never know what they've been through.

I think that's part of the reason George Clooney refused to come back for that episode. Plus NBC was still angry because they weren't inform that he would be making a small appearance when Carol left. They pulled it off once, I don't think they would have been able to do it a second time. They would have made a big deal about his return even if it was just a moment.

I loved the amount of detailed effort the ER writers and producers made in regards to terminology and patient presentation. Something as simple as that second "What happened?" from Mark right after it was explained to him, a giant red flag for healthcare providers in cases of head injury, in today's 'medical' shows would've been spun into some sort of high tech futuristic brain scan mumbo jumbo.

For me, he was the heart of the show. I mean, I loved almost everyone else (even grew to appreciate Benton and Romano, two of the most 'unlikable' main characters the show had at least in the beginning) but when Mark died, the show died for me, just never was the same (as in life). I stopped watching at that point but my mom watched to the end and told me about it so I still felt that those left behind and the new ones coming on board were like family.

Those of us who have been in comas understand this additional downfall of dealing with brain injuries. I am a 12 year survivor of a severe brain injury and have been through hospitalization, and two levels of brain rehabilitation. It is never an easy thing to go through because you have so much to worry about.

I know this was early in the series, so I know they had developed the storyline yet, but in reality they would have to do a head scan on Mark because of the bruising around his face and obvious head injury right? Wouldn't they had found the abnormal cells or the beginning of the tumor at that time? I just wondering about that.

GBMs take in average a year to form, as much as 2 years. This was too early to find anything.

Tumors can form a lot faster than you think. This was years before his tumor was found, he was fine back then. Hell, sometimes a tumor can appear and kill you all within a six month period. That's how fast these things can go. You can get check ups every six months, and still find it too late.

Weaver really stunk at having adequate security. Mark beaten up, Carter stabbed, Lucy stabbed to death, the shootout, Abby's kidnapping...

Not to mention an entire floor getting blown up (complete with vaporizing the patient who somehow was allowed to light up a cigarette in his hospital bed while he was hooked up to oxygen) because of pharmacy techs cooking meth, and a desk clerk who was playing with a grenade launcher and destroyed an ambulance. And the desk clerk even got his job back later. Even if some of the hospital's management seemed like hardasses, there was way too much shit that shouldn't have been happening at a hospital going on there. lol

Nope. When this aired originally, viewers assumed it was the brother of the patient who died in Episode 17, which was a controversial storyline in itself with the racial undertones. Turned out, as written, it was just some random guy after all.
