Premier Doug Ford says he wants to build a tunnel under Highway 401 that would stretch from Brampton to Scarborough.
Citing increasing gridlock and little room for highway expansion at a news conference Wednesday morning, Ford says his government will begin studying the technical feasibility of building a tunnel stretching across the GTA under the country's busiest highway.
"This tunnel and expressway will cut gridlock support economic growth and help get people moving faster," Ford said.

That was the initial intention modelled after the Burlington Skyway. Collect tolls until the project is paid off and then make it free. However Mike Harris decided he wanted to boast to voters he had a balanced budget. He sold the 407, put the money into the general coffers and left the significant debt attached to the 407 to collect interest and be a problem future generations had to pay for. They have never been responsible with taxpayers money, they just repeat the lie over and over again and gullible people buy in.

Sure, let's make the same mistake Boston did with the Big Dig Project/the Central Artery Tunnel Project. Boston Motorists endured 10yrs of traffic caused by the reduced lanes, cost $2.1 billion USD, and it didn't completely solve the problem. I think Ford is getting worried about his chances of being reelected so the more bizarre projects he'll come up with. Ford whould be better off pressuring the federal government for funding to build that high speed rail network that's suppose to connect Montreal, Toronto to Windsor and all the cities/towns in between for a travel time of under 5 hours instead of a highway.
@xcfjdyrkdtulkgfilhu
@xcfjdyrkdtulkgfilhu 2 күн бұрын
That project is dumb too. 5 hours is barely faster than the existing Via rail travel time Toronto-Montreal, which is in turn only a little cheaper than short-haul flights. So what's the business case for high speed rail? There's not much market in the middle between those who prioritize the cheapest possible ticket or the fastest travel.
@sirxavior1583
@sirxavior1583 2 күн бұрын
@@xcfjdyrkdtulkgfilhu .Once you calculate the total time it takes for a 400km flight vs rail travel, statistically trains win out. You'll waste 1.5hr -2hrs arriving at the airport, going through Airport security, checking in for your flight and waiting. That's already half the travel time by train. With VIA rail you can just arrive at the Station 10min before the train leaves. Also the train is less impacted by weather, flights get cancelled to inclement winter this rarely happens with VIA rail. If they can build a new line with trains traveling 250km like in Germany or Japan you'd cut the travel time to around 3hrs. There is a market if you check the VIA rail bookings statistics for the corridor. Many times the tickets are sold out.

Of all the bonkers ideas ....look at tunneling for the Eglinton crosstown. The best part of a billion dollars a kilometer, massive traffic disruptions on the surface over the actual work, and it's taken over a decade for a relatively short length of tunnel. Scale that to a 401 bypass underground from Mississauga to Pickering, and we'd be looking at $60 billion plus, four or five decades to dig it, and big chunks of the surface highway out of business while they're tunneling underneath. To add the width of maybe two lanes each way, if they're skinny lanes. So, Doug, I'll save you some trouble on your feasibility study - it isn't feasible. Your monorail idea was less bad than this.

Adding more lanes will not work. It has never worked. To reduce commute times, you need to reduce traffic. To reduce traffic, you need to increase alternatives. You also need more cities. Just another proponent of the 15 minute city. Mass transit works for the masses, it doesn't work for individuals. Travel the world and learn about where we have been and where we are heading. Stay in a hotel in downtown Seoul. They have separate exits from the hotel to the streets, based on which direction you are heading. The reason for this is that when you pass through the doors, masses of human bodies are passing by, either going left or right and once you step into that traffic, you move as part of the masses, like rafting on a river, it's next to impossible to head upstream. That's where we are heading. The solution is not mass transit or more expansion, it's less mass, or less people. Restrict immigration and the problem goes away.
@MichaelSheaAudio
@MichaelSheaAudio Күн бұрын
@@clifflayne9073 Jumping around Seoul in google street view, I could see that the streets are very similar in design to Japan. Not Just Bikes has a recent video on Tokyo's streets that is worth a watch, even the video on Taipei. You are fearmongering about walkable neighborhoods. A life where we wouldn't need to get into a car that costs us thousands of dollars every year and go sit in air-polluted traffic just to get groceries. No one wants that. Let me know if you enjoy sitting in traffic, enjoy paying thousands for your vehicle annually, enjoy the thousands of road deaths every year, enjoy how your city has to be built around car priority. You say transit is built for the masses, and that's correct. It's a way more efficient method of moving people, it's not even close. However, without adequate transit, where do the masses end up? On the road taking up space from people who actually want or need to be there. This isn't a war on cars, cars will still exist, they still have their uses. Cars would just be one of many viable modes of transportation instead of the only one. The fact that Ontario doesn't have a provincial rail line is pathetic. People should be able to go from Windsor to Ottawa and anywhere in between without driving or flying. And that's just the main line. Connections to London, Niagara Falls, Kitchener/Waterloo, Guelph, Brampton, Newmarket, Barrie, everywhere would have a connection. Such a network would take a huge load off of the 401 and roads in general. If you personally want to live in a big house on a big lot in a car dependent suburb and drive literally everywhere because you're segregated from amenities, then go for it, that exists. For the rest of us, I'm cool with a small home that's a 5 minute walk from the grocery store. 👍

If they take the toll charge off the sections under their control , it wouldn't be so expensive and more drivers would use that existing road . 4 billion for broadband? Starlink is available now. Could buy a dish for every Canadian without internet for less than 1 billion.

Ford is lying about Crombie. She never said she would cancel the gas tax cut and Ford’s own Finance Minister is the one who keeps saying it is temporary and we are only renewing it for this amount of time.😂😂

@@JaneMurray-di3gq the gas tax money a large portion is usually spent on provincial transfers to municipalities for infrastructure, public transit and housing initiatives like homeless shelter spaces. When the gas tax is cut on one end the municipalities make up the deficit in their provincial transfers by hiking property taxes higher than they could be. There is only one taxpayer.
