It's clear the Dodge Hornet has not been breaking any sales records... but why is that? Today I get behind the wheel of this poorly selling SUV and figure out what is so wrong with it? Is there a reason its selling so bad? Or is it just being so poorly advertised that no one even knows it exists? Let's find out.
Check out our website here!

I don’t think I will ever buy a new car again. Losing money immediately, having to deal with the dealerships to get service, worrying about scratches, dents and dings, having a car payment and expensive insurance. I’m just sticking to cheap old cars I can work on myself. I spent a lot of money buying cars before I learned my lesson. So even if they priced new cars at $25k, I really don’t want them. Even putting a bit of money to repair a used car is worth it to me.

Four years ago, I bought a 2010 Lacrosse v6 3.0 with 37 thousand miles for ten grand out the door. It was garage kept and well maintained. I have put back brakes new plugs and coils. I had one coil go bad, so I changed all of them. And I put a new temp sensor and oil changes. The car runs and drives like new, I now have 57 thousand on it, money well spent. I could sell the car for what I have in it right now. NEVER BUY NEW unless you are rich and have too much money.

@@Chip-hm3ny I was buying Corvette, Lexus, a Mach 1 Mustang, Infiniti and Subaru. Living it up within a 5-10 year period. Then the career I was in changed up after covid. I saw things going downhill and sold my new car then I got laid off. I used to buy old cars and fix them up, sell it and get another. 2-3 cars a year usually. It was fine with cheap cars but when I started making good money I scaled up and threw away so much money. Now my project is an 89 Cadillac which is much more reasonable. 07 Toyota Yaris for a daily. No car payments and cheap insurance. Out of necessity and lack of income I'll probably just keep what I have now and maintain them as long as possible. Maybe one day buy a used Lexus.

The 2017 Alfas had some teething issues but the 2018s and newer seem to be very reliable. I bought a barely used 2019 Giulia Ti earlier this year and it’s been a joy to own and drive. Their reputation (fair or not) definitely contributes to their poor resale value. Used Stelvios and Giulias are relative bargains… certainly leaving room for an extended warranty if it concerns you. That said, I have also owned a number of Mazdas over the years and have literally NEVER needed a repair during the warranty period. They are great cars.

It's a Stellantis/Alfa issue right now. Lack of reliability in all their products since they released this vehicle. And now banks are not financing these things unless you have a big down payment because of the reliability issues and how quickly they depreciate. To top it all off, look and see what Stellantis is doing to Dodge/Chrysler right now, they could no longer be a brand in a year or two.

Agree. Went to Columbus Ohio ( about 30 miles north of me) to look at a Stelvio, and the dealer was shut down. No warning, like go to work and there is a sign on the door type of thing. TONS of vehicles on the lot but dealer closed doors locked. All cars there were to go to Cleveland or Cincinnati. The Dodge dealership COULD sell me one ( same dealer) and his Alfa service tech stayed at the Dodge side. They could do maintenance work, but any warranty or recall work would have to be done in Cincinnati or Cleveland. The Hornet being the exception, but a no go on the Tonale. I believe this is a Stellantis/environment problem. Perhaps the Government here demanding electric only vehicles, when the market, infrastructure and common sense doesn't support that. Combine poor management and cost cutting from Stellantis, AND poor government policies and you get this.

Here is the problem I had with the Dodge Hornet when it was first introduced in early 2023 when I was very interested in it. I went to three local dealerships and between the three the cheapest version any of them had on the lot was $44,000 and they went up from there. I think they launched the vehicle wanting to sell the higher end versions and the general public balked at it. If you have a buyer who knows and understands the likes of the Charger or Challenger they understand the high prices for the performance of the vehicle. When you have people coming to the lot to check out a new compact vehicle they were, "sticker shocked" and like myself, drove off the lot. I think now in September of 2024 they have realized their initial ambitious sales pitch of the Hornet failed and they have started offerering more of the reasonable priced units in the lower $31-33K. I am not sure where you found this one for $28K as I have not found one anywhere in the area I live that has a 2024 Hornet on the lot for that price. I agree, its not a bad vehicle, in my opinion it was marketed all wrong at the launch. Few everyday people are willing to pay $44K for a compact Dodge branded SUV that many know to be a rebadged product of another brand that doesn't sell well in the U.S. I think with bigger discounts, and better interest rates the numbers for these Hornets will improve some, but in a very competitive market they are only going to sell so many. This will never be a, "Big" seller like the Toyota Rav4 or Honda CR-V.

I rented one of these for 2 weeks or a month (can't remember. I think it was closer to a month, actually), so I got a nice, big dose of Hornet. The one I had was the plug-in hybrid version (which I DID NOT plug-in. I used it as a gas vehicle only). And, actually, I thought it was a great car! So much so, that I said, on numerous occasions, that I would BUY one if it weren't so damn expensive (I think the version I had STARTED at $48K, though). And I DID buy a car a little bit after that. But it wasn't a Hornet. I went with a Mazda CX-5. Why DIDN'T I get the Hornet? Well, I've really only been into cars since about 2020. I pay a lot of attention to online reviews. But I'll be the first to admit that I don't know EVERYTHING about cars. And the vast majority of videos on KZbin about this vehicle are EXTREMELY negative (particularly the ones from Dodge customers). From all this negativity, I gleaned that Dodge (or perhaps Stellantis as a whole) does not exactly have the strongest reputation for reliability. When you read previous Dodge owners saying things like "I will never buy another Stellantis product again!", that kind of stuff stays with you. While I enjoyed the car as a RENTAL vehicle, it may turn out very differently over the long-term. I felt that previous Dodge owners offered some valuable insight in regards to long-term reliability, so I played it safe, and got the Mazda. I agree that these will make EXCELLENT leased vehicles. I hope they find some success with it in this respect.

The market days supply is NOT a measure of sales rates. It is a measure of the production minus the sales rate. There are cars that sell FAR worse.

Hmmm. This explains that time I went into a dealer to check out a Jeep Grand Cherokee and they were trying to convince me that this Dodge Hornet was better and totally just as roomy. Decided to get an Escape Plug-in Hybrid instead. It pairs the Ford/Mazda Duratec 2.5L I4 with a Toyota-designed hybrid system and it’s way better than the little 3-cylinder ones.

Stellantis clearly doesn't understand the American car market and is destroying any market share the old Chrysler brands and old Fiat brands may have had here. There's a reason why French brands haven't really sold well in the American car market, they're not that good and they don't know how to market to us. I remember when Peugeot was in the American market in the late 1980's and early 1990's, when they tried to work with AMC. Chrysler bought AMC along with their Jeep and Eagle brands, kicked Peugeot out and got rid of AMC. What Peugeot did have in the Eagle brand was older Mazda technology and Chrysler got that and improved their cars in the 1990's with models like the Intrepid and the cab-forward design. Then they redesigned the Dodge pickups making them a serious competitor against Ford and Chevy. But anyway, I digress, Stellantis has fully wrecked Chrysler and Dodge, and I fear to the point that they will not be around in a couple of years. Chrysler now only has one Model, the Pacifica, and Dodge has what, 3 or 4 models, if that? Then they go and make Ram and Jeep, "upscale, luxury" vehicles, to where a Ram Tradesman base model work truck is over $40,000, when they should be under $30,000. Nope, Stellantis needs to reevaluate their marketing of the Chrysler brands, and either fix their marketing strategy of sell off the Chrysler brands, but I have no idea who would buy them, except for maybe the Jeep/Ram brand.

Love my Hornet R/T! Can go a day or two short drives on one charge. Electric cost per mile is about half of gas in most places. In Sport mode with it 's dual motor, it becomes a high performance thrill machine on roads where you can open it up and enjoy. Also great for confident passing and maneuvering in all modes, but especially Sport mode. Great options like heated and air conditioned seats, and sensors like lane assist and automatic multi distance cruise control.

Those claiming poor reliability don't know what they're talking about, these claims based on Alfas from many years ago, the entire contemporary line of Alfas all reliable. I own 2020 Alfa Giulia TI Sport Q4, extensively researched reliability prior to purchase, and I diy maintain all my cars for years. 2017-19 had some electrical relay issues, other than that plastic fittings which all cars have issues with these days, main components pretty bulletproof. The problem with the Hornet and Alfa Romeo in general is Stellantis doesn't know how to market, too many poor dealers, price gauging. Contemporary Alfas have Ferrari developed chassis, simply sublime, better than any BMW or Mercedes I've owned or driven. Both 2.0 Turbo and twin turbo V6 in QV's great engines, ZF transmission one of the best out there, fit and finish on mine is great. This car a blast to drive, I'll take over any of the BMW's, Mercedes and present Coyote engine Mustang. Stellantis doesn't deserve Alfa, and now with likely demise of Alfa in US, one less great car line.

It’s a 4 year old car. When I think of reliable I think of a car that can last 20 years and 200k miles or more. Any car can be reliable for 5 years, unless maybe it’s a Nissan. Not saying it’s not a good car but I just don’t think this early on we can say it’s reliable. I think most turbocharged, performance oriented cars most likely will not make it 200k miles and that goes for basically any brand. I do like the Guilia, it’s a nice looking car and have heard a lot of owners love them. Probably better than most Stellantis products currently available.

READ MY PRIOR REVIEW. THEN YOU WILL HAVE ACTUALLY NOTED THINGS THAT ARE AFFECTING THE SALES TREMENDOUSLY. It's really small. Cargo is tiny. Rear seats are cramped. Has multiple blind spots. NO ELECTRIC SEATS without getting leather. NO PADDLE SHIFTERS till 2025. No front wheel drive . AWD ONLY hurts mileage.

This guy is taking this wannabe Dodge product as if it’s good enough. Give it a few months the engine will be messed up and the electronics will fail this car is a lemon. 🍋 Still ain’t worth that much. Americans don’t want it because 1 it’s expensive for an unreliable car, 2 they have lots of issues fresh out the factory in Italy , 3 stellantis won’t fix it nor will they buy it back because they are known to have bad customer service . And 4 Americans know it’s a rebadged Alfa that we as consumers didn’t ask for. Don’t buy anything from Stellantis. Carlos is a tightwad making a fool out of our Chrysler brands.

While I have not driven an Escape, I did drive a mid-trim Bronco Sport (same platform) with the EcoBoost 1.5 liter 3 cylinder, it was Cheap with a coarse drivetrain. My Maverick with the 2 liter EcoBoost and AWD is far better than its platform-mates, and just as quick as the Hornet. $37,370 for a 2024 Lariat trim is high, but not ridiculously so, my Optima SXT (with a 2 liter turbo and lots of luxury features) stickered at $33,000 in 2016. I obviously trust Ford & KIA reliability far more than Chrysler/Stellantis/Alfa Romeo. The RAV4 may outsell the other compact SUVs (due to Toyota reliability), but it lags Far behind others (esp Mazda) for driving pleasure.

Dodge priced these too high, and dealerships drank that Hellcat Kool Aid, they believed their own hype. Dodge did themselves in. Lexus NX price for a Ford Escape car. There is nothing special about this rebadged Alfa, except the high price. Now that they're discounted Dodge is hoping to get them off dealer lots before Stelantis kills the American brands.
