Why was Doug Henning so popular ? Why did he take magic to such heights? First of all he was an excellent magician he put in the hours he honed his magic to a fine art. Second he was a showman , he made every trick his own . But most of all and one of the reasons he will always be a favorite was that he had such a great energy ,he was so likeable. I believe the practice of T.M. helped him achieve his goals and some of his goals took us to another place and made us very happy. R.I.P. Doug

The amazing Doug Henning. I watched him perform on television when I was a kid. Never forgot.

Doug Henning was an awesome down-to-earth Illusionist that never presented himself as flashy or "mysterious". A true entertainer. Criss Angel needs to take notes.

the greatest modern magician, and I think that the greatest thing from him it was that his magic became from his heart.

This shows why is he is (was) the master. He is still more entertaining then just turning a box to Phil Collins music like so many do now. My hero of Magic.

Yes! this is not a classic - Doug was the first magician to perform this illusion created for him by Jim Steinmeyer - what a gorgeous prop and charming presentation - a real gem!

Funny, I thought the same thing, so tragic. I adored Henning, as a boy, my awesome Mother took me to see the "Magic Show" on Broadway, I took up serious magic when I had my own son to share it with him...all thanks to Doug Henning (and my dear Mother of course). We miss you Doug

In the 70's, it was Doug Henning vs nobody. Henning was already a well-established magician by the time Copperfield performed his first trick on a national scale, David was just 21. Henning was Copperfield's contemporary, Henning had a sold out show on Broadway for 4 1/2 years, Tony nominations..in the early 80's Copperfield only did an annual TV special on a national scale, they weren't competitors. Copperfield moved to the foreground when Henning retired in '85.

Sad to hear him say that. "That's not going to happen in this family." Didn't he die a short time later? Very sad. Great talent and wonderful man.

Logan was right in a sense; the Origami has become a modern classic, yet it is true that this was created specifically for Doug Henning by Steinmeyer. Doug was the first to perform it, with his charming easy style.

This is a licensed illusion which costs thousands to license and perform publicly. All of these awesome stage tricks are expensive like that ($5-$20,000 or so) unless you use a public domain illusion which you can get the plans for.

The origami box is not really a trick but more of an experiment in science. Like the topological marvel of the Mobius strip, a cleverly constructed piece of paper that possess only one side, the origami box illusion relies heavily upon advanced mathematics and geometry. At the beginning of the trick both the outside and the inside of the box possess virtually the same area and are therefore very close to being the same size. However when the box is folded up, due to it's

exacting and precise construction, the surface area on the outside of the box is transferred to the inside thus increasing the surface area on the inside of the box. Therefore the surface area of the inside of the box becomes greater than that of the outside making the inside of the box bigger than the outside. The assistant actually has more room at the height of the trick than she does at the beginning and thus has no difficulty in dodging the swords while changing her outfit.
