Here is a thought I had. Since Maria, (that 🙋‍♀️) student obviously knows the answer, one benefit of going ahead and calling her is that if for any reason the the other students don't understand the topic the way we the teachers explain it, maybe Maria can, will and/or does say something in a certain way to where it makes sense to her peers.

In cases like that what you can do is after Maria gives her answer to call on a kid that didn’t understand it at first and ask them to summarize Maria’s answer. If I have a student that repeatedly tries the “I don’t know” answer I’ll keep coming back to them every other student until they can at least repeat the right answer.
