Exclusive previously unreleased footage of Doug Marcaida from LA 2016 seminar teaching third hand principle: Karambit vs Straight Blade.
I have hundreds of hours of previously unreleased footage through my years of travelling and documenting FMA masters from around the world. As my journey evolves, I am finding renewed appreciation for the knowledge, skill and artistry contained within my hard drives. I intend to release them over time as a service and presentation to the FMA community.
The footage will stand on their own merit. I will not impose my thoughts and opinions of them. They are documented as they happened and they will be presented in the same way. I hope practitioners of the Filipino Martial Arts will find them useful and valuable.

That would be sick disarm if someone pulled it off in an actual fight. I wish i had a place to train some of this stuff because most martial arts places don't train for blades.

FR no one here does knife fighting training, bullshit. At least I had a spook friend teach me some good and useful skills. Hard to find a competent local teacher...

Honestly, it makes no sense to disarm someone if you have a knife too. We should just assume that they aren't playing around. Why should we? Parry the knife ,create the angle, and slash the neck. Don't play with your food. The only reason I would ever go for the disarm if it was someone I loved,but any one else is sliced and dice.

I seen a guy do something similar... but it worked because the guy with the knife got stuck in his plate carrier. We'd breached through a door and my buddy was first in, I was second. Guy was already with the blade at ready... we'd been fighting through I think... 3 or 4 nearby buildings? something like that). He came straight at my buddy and that blade went hard into the plate (after action showed the blade slid across the plate and got caught by a magazine and some MOLLE) and my buddy had just learned that move from me a few weeks back (been doing kali since I was a kid, we had just been fucking around and I wanted to show him something cool), so it was still fresh in his mind. I saw the actual stab, disarm, and the reversal. He grabbed the knife from his cradle and jammed it into the guys throat. It was pretty brutal. Bad guy didn't survive. I was completely jealous. Infantry guys are always gunning for a knife kill if they can find the opportunity. His was one of the coolest I've ever seen.

Less philosophical/ hypothetical and more integrity interms of "teach what you use" DM has a fear of "metaphysical" and legal repercussions , meaning not knowledgeable of law so takes position of "teacher/ lover" not fighter. As a social Scientist, the question of purpose always looms akin to leaders that recruit for wars they wont fight.

The karambit, is not just a cool looking knife, it’s actually a perfect weapon to apply for self-defense. For me it’s not about its look, rather it’s applicability to real-life self-defense situations. Self-defense is not meant to be “pretty” … it’s meant to work by any means necessary. There are plenty of knives we can choose to carry for this purpose, the karambit is just one of them. 👊🏾

@@steveabraham3052 The karambit is a farming tool pressed into service as a weapon, and not even a good one at that. Can it cut, sure. So can a parry knife. But if you look at knives purpose built as weapons, they look completely different than the karambit. Given two fighters of equal skill, a fighter with a Fairbairne Sykes dagger is going to bleed a fighter with a karambit dry 9 times out of 10, because the dagger is much better designed as a combat implement; namely, the blade is straight with the tip directly inline with the center of the handle so it is more instinctive, it has better reach, and more cutting surface. The dagger was never a farming tool improvised into a weapon like the karambit, and we have thousands of years of martial history with the dagger, so we know it is very effective.

@@MTMILITIAMAN7.62 I don’t disagree with you about the dagger. Agreed, any knife can be applied as a self-defense weapon. What’s more important than the weapon applied, is the person behind the weapon. You don’t o ow who you’re going to encounter in a self-defense situation, but what you “should” know, is your ability to weld the weapon you choose to carry. If your proficient with your weapon, then be happy with that. Also, if able… don’t just carry one 🤪

Always the same with this guy and his drills.Pedestrian pace , compliant opponents and overly unnecessary trapping and slashes. Why do we never see this stuff pressure tested? anything goes(punches, kicks or throws) fight where you both have 10 seconds to inflict a fatal wound? Practicing what was displayed here you will never use for real and understandably those that teach it can't as they'll get killed or end up in prison. Keep it simple but deadly?

This is completely true for many martial arts. But, I believe one important thing to note here is, Doug Marcaida is not teaching an advanced knife class in this video, he is teaching what seems to be normal civilians. He is attempting to teach a principle that is useful in some knife practices. And the important word is teaching. It is much easier to teach something at a slow pace, rather than a fast one. It is also easier to teach martial arts when someone is compliant. One last thing to note here, is that this is one small clip, and I have yet to find a full class taught by Doug Marcaida, but, there is most likely more that we have not seen that makes more sense of this. Just wanted to point a couple things out.

I train silat and kali and the real answer is this is just demonstration and seminar theatrics. A real fight on the street with bladed weapons wont last more than a few moves. Eyes and throat shot and running the other way is preferable. If you cant escape then i would be trying to control that weapon hand while going for vital targets and not trying to pretzel the guy up in locks and waste time. Best way to disarm someone with a weapon ? Take out the person holding it. Not saying the finesse, openings and techniques here are totally useless. Theres a place for everything and its good to train a wide skillet so if the opportunity presents itself you can capitalize. But in all martial arts there are 'low percentage (high effort, high risk and slimmer chance of pulling off) techniques' and 'high percentage techniques (bread and butter fundamental techniques that you know you can pull off most the time on most opponents)' The low percentage stuff is the fancy and intricate moves that attracts seminar goers and casual martial arts people that want the 'cool and trendy super deadly' flash which makes money and attention, but isnt whats most useful in combat and reality.
