Doug on 105 KITS San Francisco in 1983!

Here is a radio time capsule from 1983. This is me- Doug Ritterling (Doug Ritter) at 23 years of age-with a few condensed minutes of live radio. This recording is a telescoped late morning hour from 105 KITS, San Francisco. These recordings were called "air checks" back in the day. Hot Hits Radio was a very energized, jingle infused form of Contemporary Hits Radio, created by programmer Mike Joseph. It was a difficult format for air personalities; not only did each break have to be live, creative and different, they also had to last an exact amount of time...all under 10 seconds. No longer, not shorter-or you could receive a hotline call from Mike suggesting that you do the format correctly!
This recording was made by a fan of Hot Hits radio, a then gifted to me a few years ago. Now I share it with you.

I found KITS as a 11 year old kid in the late spring of 1983. Prior to that I was a KFRC. My neighbor across the street was playing KITS and I was wondering where that station was on the dial. Well prior to KITS all the good stations were on AM so I switched the band selector to FM and found KITS lol. I know most folks admire KITS in the “Live 105” era, but for me I was sad when KITS switched from TOP40 in the fall of 1986. San Francisco was left without a CHR station for a couple years after Oct. 1986. KMEL was already by that time more rhythmic leaning.
