STARE, DOILY, FLOUR (thought that might be the solution), which led me to PROWL (although in hindsight it could have been "growl" which Doug also overlooked). Finished the month of April with an average of 3.87, which is my third best month. Overall average at 4.02. Streak currently at 225.

Took me five, a bit frustrating because I got the center but there were many possibilities from either side. BOAST > ODOUR > CROWN > GROWL > PROWL

A little scary but you got it, Doug. After “stare” and “doily” I had an “r”, “o” and “l”. I thought of floor and growl, already used; then, drool, flour, and prowl. I’m sure that I missed something but I went with “prowl”. So a “3” for me today. staRe- dOiLy- PROWL

If DROOL was your first guess, then why not go with it?

@@darwinthecat DROOL was the first word I thought of, but PROWL was a better strategic choice. For simplicity, let's assume that the 3 words I considered (DROOL, PROWL, and GROWL) are the only solutions. Let's also assume that my 3rd guess (whatever it is) is incorrect. DROOL eliminates only 1 word, leaving 2 possible answers. PROWL eliminates 2 words, leaving only 1 possible answer.

Good solve, Doug! Sadly, I did not maintain the small three-guess streak I had going there, but I got it in a respectable four this time, so I'm not too mad. Nice job but it could have been growl. I got it in 3 today. I only had 2 choices after my 2nd word which, like you was growl and prowl. Luckily, I went with the letter P since it is the first letter of my name. ORATE--FLUID--PROWL.
