I have been paralyzed from the neck down for nearly 18 years, and I experience major anxiety constantly. Being a c4 quadriplegic means that I am unable to move or feel my body below my shoulders, making me susceptible to bedsores. I have dealt with bedsores in the past, and I worry incessantly about the possibility of developing another one. The only time my anxiety subsides is when my caregiver repositions me in bed and checks my skin for red marks. My heart even races as I await my caregiver's assessment of my skin. Coping with this situation is a constant challenge that consumes my every waking moment.

You are a champion. And you can bravely discuss your situation so honestly. I'm impressed. Hey if you ever want someone to chat with feel free to respond and I will give you my phone number or e mail. I'm not sure what I would do if I was in your situation. I don't blame you for anxiety. I have so many questions. I can't help but want to help. Maybe because it's a fear of mine. Do you know joni Erikson tada ? She's also and a quadriplegic from a diving accident at the age of 17. Her videos are powerful. She does not sugarcoat your very real situation

That sounds awful. Pressure mapping has come a long way over the past 5-10 years. Have you looked into smart cushions for your w/c or smart overlays for the bed? They can alert in real time when pressure has been applied too long.

He’s the first person who has said that the anxiety begins in the body and i so agree. My reasons for anxiety have passed but i get anxious and upset over small challenging things and even when there is nothing to be anxious about the alarm is there all the time. It starts in my body.

Thank you as always Doctor. I'm learning that disconnecting the alarm, and my thinking, separate from my core. My core is always safe and perfect. I go right to my Spirit, which is just above my alarm zone (solar plexes) and work only on unhooking the alarm, and my brain from each other, and then from my Spirit, which is not a part of my core.

Spot on with anxiety stored in the body. It literally is a part of who you are. As trauma is a result of something terrible and anxiety is based on trauma, good luck resolving it. I have an anxiety disorder starting from birth, more later at age 8, etc. Being a naturally happy person allows me to compartmentalize anxiety, which isnt healthy, but its the best method ive found for me. I do the box breathing method often, which helps to center myself and break anxiety explosion that would normally spin out.

@Guys_Love_Each_Other

Yes, that is likely part of the reason. Our brains have not changed much over thousands of years, while technology has changed rapidly. This mismatch can lead to feelings of pressure and overwhelm. Social media and smartphones, in particular, have a big effect on our lives and our overall mental health. So, while technology has made many positive changes in our world, it has also caused some negative effects. As with many things, it is important to find the right balance between the benefits of technology and the drawbacks.

I'd say that's why people with complex trauma, anxiety etc aren't as successful doing affirmations as people who don't struggle that way. There's often some toxic positivity that comes out and it's very triggering for people who struggle with positive thinking bc of how their brains are wired.

Speaking for myself, I've had my alarms (tight abdominal wall and clenched jaw) since childhood. It's not until the last 5 years that I came to discover these chronic body stresses. In my day-to-day life, these alarms are on 24/7. I have to remind myself to feel for them to relax them. It's a constant and I've only learned to focus on them after seeing one of your videos last week. Is this the best practice to get into in an effort to access my dysfunctional frontal cortex?

My father mad schizophrenic too, no mother either, she disappeared; i have really bad anxiety, depression all my life; I have a lot of pills, but best thing and it works so well, is 🏊‍♀️ swimming; then I can think and relax and I am not wound up and irritable, mind all muddled, also meditation clears mind but sometimes I can't stop moving to meditate plus I have bad backpain often by afternoon, drawing, painting are also soothing and settle the mind, swimming can make back worse though, its definitely in the body, so true!❤Got to stop the uppers and downers, I am an addict too!🎉😂😢

Same here I think asking ourselves realistic questions and only controlling what we can is a start I’ve learned to do . We have a choice on what we allow ourselves to enter our mind . It’s work but it’s worth it definitely !

He referencing something talked about in polyvagal theory. People need social connection to help create a feeling of safety. It's working fine for you. It's subconscious, so it's not something you can turn on or off. You just know when you feel safe around certain people and not around others.

Dr Russ how do I find the right therapist with your approach ? I have a person who disclosed trauma, sexual assault in past , unaddressed and now manifest as persistent alarm. I am not sure current therapy is actually working for this person . What you are saying makes sense to me. I would like this person receive the therapy they need and deserve.

Dear Doc, you are saying no one can have had this brilliant love and all of a sudden if 25 years old, I start saying I can’t be connected to people and I can’t love WITHOUT having a trauma in the childhood. What if someone didn’t have a trauma and the relationships diminished? Could it be a mental illness “without a childhood trauma or drugs or bad lifestyle ?
