19:58 Doug, the only reason this car won't sell is if dealers continue with their criminal markups. Otherwise, these things will sell like crazy. Hyundai's N models are all at the top of my list, and I don't think I'm alone there. The Veloster N is finally a real hot hatch that's somewhat affordable, and the Kona N is the next best thing. All the fun but with a far more practical back half. Hyundai has clearly done some marketing research to find what people actually want. Enthusiasts have been chomping at the bit waiting for this car to finally hit the streets in the US for what feels like ages. Personally, as long as the dealers don't fuck everything up like they have been, this car will move off lots really quickly. This isn't something silly like a Nissan Juke Nismo RS that's so obscure that you can still find them for sale at fairly low prices despite this ridiculous market. These N cars are actually fun performance machines, not just economy cars with a body kit.

This was intended for Doug: Wait a minute... If I'm looking to buy a C8 Corvette (which is a new car, and retails around $70k) I can get it on your site for $25k OVER msrp, but AFTER it's been driven off the lot? Or if I'm looking for a 2022 CT5 Blacking (again, a new car) I can get it for like $50k, or $60k OVER msrp on your site! WOW, I'll be sure to go to your site, so I can pay damn near double msrp for a pre-owned new car, so the rich @$$-h0l3s who pre-order these new cars, without even having the money to pay for them, can gauge the prices and use the auction money to pay these cars off, then keep the difference, and make tens of thousands of dollars profit, by using your site to rip off stupid people??? I'll be sure to assist con artists in extracting money from stupid upper middle class douchebags, who are just trying to keep up with the Joneses, and watch the upper middle class burn their of the disposable income on a car that they're either going to wreck, or trade in or sell at a loss... While all ohf this prices young and up-and-coming enthusiasts out of the "enthusiast car" market... CARS & BIDS!, ruining it for everyone.. but getting already rich people even richer in the process! It's only partially dealers. A Cars & Bids seller just sold a $100k msrp Hummer 4 for more than double it's msrp, and they came out this month...
@axe2grind244

You can get one in any color pretty much everywhere and actually pay msrp. $35.5k is what the window sticker said and that’s what I paid. If you can’t find one for $35k you’re not looking too hard.

I own one for 6 months now and man I could never be happier. This car is extra fair package for bucks which you never get nowadays. I have a 2016 RRS blacked out that I forget about since I own the Kona. So much fun to drive with the pops and bangs you treat roads different after you drive one. I just can't describe how proud I feel to close this deal. I believe such a vehicle won't last forever reliability wise but who cares the experience is priceless. The best part is that I blacked out red lines and rear emblem of Hyundai and got red of Kona badge which makes it perfect anonymous sleeper and you see it in people's eyes when they go huh!. Not to mention the simple yet so practical interior design. You get quality and all necessity you wish for. Material are perfectly put except the plastic which wouldn't break the deal. The interior is more than you expect you get all you need with no useless tech that counts from your bill. Dude if you get the cash go for it it's one of a lifetime deal!.

So, I have had my Kona N for about 2 months now. All I can say is if you want a car that always puts a smile on your face, this is it! So an edit to this. Orginally I ordered a GR86 back in december, and well they kept pushing the arrival date back. I was looking for another car for my wife and when I pulled in the lot, there was the Kona N. I took it out for a drive and instantly fell in love, bought it and never looked back at Toyota. here's the thing, no it doesn't have AWD which does suck, I understand why it's not there though. But this thing is a ton more practical over the GR, AND everyone in my family can drive it, and sit in it. Hell my daughter is learning how to drive with it. Is it quirky absolutely, but that's what makes this car so awesome! Will it sell? yes, they can't keep them in stock in my area, i was lucky to have pulled in to see it sitting there with 10 miles on it. If you see one, I would encourage you to get in it for a test drive. Doug, you're the best!

My previous car was a 2003 Mazda Protege5. I was prepared to drive that car until either it or I died, but I my son needed a car STAT so I passed it along to him this spring. It had about 140,000 mi on the clock at the time. I took my time considering what I might get to replace it, and the Kona N fit the form factor: 5-door hatchback, same nifty wheel base. My wife, who has NEVER shown any interest in car-shopping even if she will be the principal driver, actually caught Kona N fever. We purchased "our" Sonic Blue Kona N on the last day of May: Told the salesman we weren't going to pay for any dealer add-ons or "market adjustment," just straight MSRP (which was more than fair). He asked us how soon we could get to the dealership to pick up the car.

@@ronforeman2556 We only have 2 dealers in the area that's marking up cars. Oddly enough while my wife can careless about performance, she loves to drive it. She hasn't hit the red button yet, but plans on it at some point. There are some things I don't like about the car, it's not all great. i'm not all that impressed with the sound system, and one thing all of my other cars have with the satelite is that I can mark songs/artists as favorites and will alert me when they come on, this one doesn't do that. I don't like how I can't put my favorite stations in the order I want, but I heard that's fixed in the software update that came out a few months ago. I haven't updated it yet.

Tons of tech and I slapped a JB4 on mine and it really amped up the fun factor X3! My local dealers can't get them and I had to drive 150 miles to get mine and put a deposit on it before it arrived. The Juke Nismo is essentially the only other "performance" crossover I can think of. And to be real, the difference in performance between the Veloster and the Juke is night and day. The Juke just happens to be good for gravel roads, "softroading" and gets pretty dang good mileage. My Veloster gets attention from the state patrol. :( I wish the Kona N had slightly more ground clearance and a manual transmission option. I don’t really like the design of this, but I also don’t hate it. I do think Hyundai is killing it, though. Very delighted with their offerings. @Brandon What ego boost? Having driven Veloster N's, and having raced slightly modified ones. The Kona keeps up, and surprisingly well up to about 135. Much more than anyone seems to give it credit considering it's market share. By the way, the N specific Pirelli P Zero's are heinous. Get yourself some Pilot Sport 4s's and enjoy performance. Enough to spin first, but not to the point where it makes the car physically slower because of the rubbers limitations.

I definitely recommend the GTI for others, but also give the Kona N a try, it surprises you. I drove by a guy in a new GTI, he had his windows down, and the man wouldn't stop looking at me, with a impressed yet confused expression 😉

I mean sub compact crossovers are basically the 2020's hatchback. Half of them I could argue are just hatchbacks with large tires.

Calling it now. The Elentra/Veloster/Kona N are the modern Neon/Caliber SRT's. These will be highly desirable, affordable fun cars for the every man much later if not today.

It’s a small cute little chipmunk car that just so happens to be really quick. I quite like this concept of making small and fast crossovers. It makes sense since full sized SUVS are just fighting against physics making them less useable

The fact that a compact crossover (whatever it's classified as) from HYUNDAI has better performance than an STi, BRZ, and other sportier cars, is crazy. Hyundai has done a great job lately with their cars.

Don’t agree with your comment about nobody will buy this car. More and more people are looking for performance SUVs or Cross Overs. The Kona N is perfect for me. I have the practicality and it is super fun to drive.

I love mine, it’s kinda funny though that it’s a slightly raised crossover/suv thing that they lowered. Which doesn’t make much sense but whatever, car make vroom vroom noises

isn't the Nissan Juke Nismo an example of a performance sub-compact crossover? I wonder why Doug didn't bring that car up as a competitor to this one...

I guess he hated that car because of the styling. He never reviewed it at all. I really like the Kona N, but i would still chose the Juke NISMO RS over this cuz unlike the Kona N, it offers a 6 speed manual. Something that the Kona N should have offered...

18:50 What i'd like to see is a Kona N Pluigin Hybrid, with a 20kWh battery pack and 2x20kW motors driving the rear wheels You get some regenerative braking, you get the option to mostly use electric for driving around town until you put your foot in it. It would be great to have that extra 40HP, and option to sip gas.
@chrisvalleqatsi
@chrisvalleqatsi Жыл бұрын
-but offset by the weight of the motors an battery (which fits where exactly?) I think it would be a wash at best, though maybe the straight-line acceleration (which is alrady impressive) might improve a few tenths. It might be a better sell as a boost for fuel economy.

at this point just get the kona electric... handling doesn't change at all due to the battery lowering the center of gravity a lot... I have the electric and it's cheaper upfront as well as to run it and it's just as fun to drive with the plus (for some including myself) of no noise / vibration
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 Жыл бұрын
@@kyriakos098 I dont like pure EVs because it is a waste, we could make 5x as many plugin hybrids that act as EVs 99% of the time meaning we can get more people behind the wheels of EVs with the same rare resources, also, you get the range of and simplicity of gas for road trips.
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisvalleqatsi They make 50HP in wheel hub motors, and the battery pack would be much smaller than an EV battery, if you raised the load floor of the trunk by 3-4 inches depending on how much crumple zone you want around the battery. Edit: Wouldnt be a wash because most of the time you'd plug it into the wall and hardly use any gas at all on your daily drive to work, (gas only driving accessories like power steering and brakes and hard acceleration) except for long trips where yes, it would slightly hurt fuel economy on the highway/interstate like most hybrids in general(compared to the gas only variant) where the added weight doesnt make much of a difference, but it doesnt help either because you're usually not using regenerative braking. This is a welcome offset for most people because most people spend 90% of their driving within the range of the proposed battery pack(around 50 miles on a bad day)
