11:50 if anyone is really interested, I'll try and make this as approachable as possible The simple answer is that large language models are basically really good at predicting the next most valid word. If a sentence starts off with "This is" the next thee likely words are "a" "an" or "the". Large language models essentially have created the most comprehensive version of that through simulated decades of training just to do that. Now if you simply think of code as another form of language, it makes sense. The issue (for large language models) with math is it is absolute. 1+1 always equals 2. But if the model has been shown a lot of examples of number + number = number, then it uses it's reference for the next most valid word as a number, without realising that's a math problem, not a language problem. So while it (most likely) won't mess up 1+1, since it might have seen a lot of examples of 1+1, it can't exactly manage a memory or do a bunch of calculations very precisely, because it isn't "reasoning" through a sentence like a human is. It is simply being given every single word of a conversation over and over again, and asked to keep printing words till it thinks a "response" is complete. I hope that's a decent explanation, and I am willing to elaborate if people are interested. I will warn that I am a game developer by profession, so I may not be able to tackle more complex questions :D

Coding's a lot harder to eyeball, and a lot of people making it produce code themselves also aren't that great at coding, so it reaches a bar of 'close enough good enough'.

This is basically what coding is but its a list of instructions for a computer to tell the computer what to do. For example, a videogame might have code that gives the computer instructions that when the left arrow key is pressed, it should move the videogame character left. Math is the process of making calculations with numbers. Example: 2 + 2 = 4. Though im sure you knew that. The thing about computers is they are very good at doing this on their own. You can give computers the instructions to do math, and it will do the math. A calculator in fact, is basically a really really basic computer. The "code" is the numbers you put in to calculate values. The instructions on what math to compute. A pattern is something that is regular and repeated. Such as common code structures, I.E. common instructions you give to a computer to get it to do something. LLMs (large language models, I.E. Chat GPT, Claude, ETC) are if nothing else, great at recognizing and repeating these patterns. "Junior level" is a work term, as in different jobs generally have different levels, entry level means that someone needs no experience to apply, Junior implies up to 2 years of experience. So basically I was saying that Chat GPT could write code on the level of someone with about 2 years of coding experience. AAAAAAnd after typing this all out I realized im the fucking stupid one because youre making a joke. XD

As someone that works as a back-end developer and pretty much pair programs with ChatGPT I found that it hugely depends on how you lead it to the code, if you just tell it to code something it'll be as you said, junior programming at best, but if you send it database models and ask precisely what you want it to do, with some structure examples and taking into account your objective and variables, then it can pretty much code you perfectly usable and intricate classes and functions I view ChatGPT less as a magic programming shortcut and more as a tool I gotta configure to do what I want it to do, it's almost like you program ChatGPT so it can do programming for you
