You are so talented! It’s a joy to watch. I used to sit on a stool in our garage and watch my dad make wonderful things from wood and veneer. Beautiful intricate designs on wooden boxes. I thought everyone’s dad could do that. Ofcourse I learned later in life he was an artist finding an outlet for his talent. I’m turning 69 this year and to think I have had 6 more years on earth than my dad. Thanks for bringing those warm memories back.this morning as I watch you work your magic.

Hi Doug, Brilliant! You now see what I meant when I told you I couldn't get bass wood lol. I now have a gang of 6 little men and because of the isolation thing over here in the UK they are getting bored and squabble all the time so I've almost finished a policeman to keep order Ha Ha. Bass wood USA , Lime wood UK . It's the same wood.

@@johnpin8465 Basswood is Tilia - also commonly called Lime or Linden (different from 'citrus' lime) and is a common UK tree or bush. Although, since Tilia isn't of any real use for anything but carving there may not be much of it in timber merchants though. Tilia doesn't really exist here in NZ though (early settlers didn't bring it in because it wasn't used for building) and Basswood is really expensive to bring in here as those little precut blocks we see being carved here - roughly GBP10-15 per block with freight.

I have restarted my whittling projects since the lockdown over here in the UK, you an Gene Messer gave me the whittling bug to start with many moons back, i am carving a Kingfisher as the main realistic project and also carving a chess set from branches as a fun project too but using my SAK hunter as the only tool allowed. Hi Rokh &Roll, I'm in the UK and have just found Doug and I'm so inspired by him. I did some of his simple Santa's for Xmas this year and they came out OK for a first attempt. The wood for these came from Amazon and was advertised as Basswood and it was OK for a beginner. Can I please ask you which wood you use and from where you source it? I've recently purchased some Lime wood on line from a UK supplier in block format as it's cheaper than individual small blocks, but it is very hard for a beginner like myself. It is very difficult in the UK to source North American Basswood as Doug uses, which seems to cut so much easier than European Lime. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Doug my first medium for carving was scraps lumber I learned literally hard way can't carve a knot but incorporated it I always has a swiss army knife razor sharp ready to go ir my barlow pocket knives I always keep my hand made strop you show me how to nak handy after normally 20 mins i strop ny knife depends on how hard wood is too great content stay awsome 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊🇺🇲

My first project was "So You Want to Carve a Bear" based on that video I went on Amazon and bought a Mora 120 which you had shown. I carved 3 bears, two Easter Bunnies, a little man, two chicken sticks and an ET before I listened more carefully to you, returned the Mora and bought a Helvie 1 1/4" and a 1/8" v-tool that made life so much easier. A total of 26 carvings followed. Thanks for kick starting me back to carving with this video. Great job.

Started carving/whittling in retirement. I'm 70 now; lordy how I envy you the hand strength and fine motor skill! Still, I enjoy it, and as you said, it passes the time. I've learned that more detailed knives is not the answer. It is learning to strop, strop, strop to a truly sharp edge. I've come to sharpening knives for my kids and grandkids....it passes the time. I am always fascinated by artists who can sculpt or "see" the shape in a block of whatever before they start to remove material. You actually inspired my son and I to get some carving knives last year but I'm still only carving "wizards". It's a lot of fun to practice though.

Doug, thanks for validating my first carving experience! While at camp with my son's scout troop a couple summers ago I found myself looking for something to do while the boys worked on their merit badges. I had watched my first few Doug Linker videos a week or two earlier, so the choice was easy. I picked up a decent looking piece of pine branch deadfall from the forest floor, and started in with my swiss army knife and its factory edges. It took me most of the week, but I ended up with a little guy I was willing to display in my workshop once we got back home. And yes, I did buy all the remaining basswood blocks in the camp store before we left, which I hadn't discovered until I had a couple days invested into my branch man. We were the last camp session for the summer, so I didn't feel bad about cleaning them out. I also bought a Flexcut knife after we got back. You can imagine my relief as I started on the next project!

I have a Mora 120 that, to be honest, I haven't found a use for in whittling as yet so I use it at work as a carpenter for all sorts of things, from scraping wood surfaces to trimming Lino - but this video brings a whole new meaning to whittling for me. I get loads of cut-offs that could possibly be used to make little figures but I've never thought of using them for that - and I probably won't again after the first attempt. I'll see how it goes.

I watch some, but I also listen to you as I carve whatever. Good company. I have all the knives and such a man could want. Plenty of wood...bass, pine, horse chestnut (buckeye), and wild cherry. No virus in my county yet (Lincoln Co, Kentucky) but I've stopped driving the Amish for the time being and plan to stay home till the storm passes. My mother is 85 and the last thing I want is to bring it home to her. Keep the faith, sir, as I'm sure you will.

I started carving with a Swiss Army knife back in 1973! LOL Went to carving gouges. In the late 80's I picked up a Mora Frosts 2-5/8" clip point sloyd knife with a laminated blade served me well until I picked up a Mora 120. When I joined a local carvers club they thought I was a little crazy. I always liked the flat plane carving so the Mora 120 always served me well. Now, 25 years latter I have all sorts of knives! LOL Some day I may even get a Helvie,

But, your calm voice, without distracting music in the background, was such a welcome break from all the madness on KZbin. It was so relaxing I did some binge watching! Now I have finally decided what to carve in some of the standing dead trees around here en masse. Not just a few faces watching my "campsite" (on property but away from house). Sasquatch! We have a lot of tales of them around here bordering the Ishi wilderness. Sometimes camping out there people hear someone/thing off in the distance beating a tree with a log or bat. Not a 200lb nocturnal woodpecker. There could be wild people out there too considering it is where the last surviving wild tribe in america hid out after their slaughter. Not likely other campers since its a very long and rough road and you often need a chainsaw (winter tree-falls) and a winch (rock slides too big for 50" tires) to get there. Just need to find a cheap hatchet replacement. Been using an old vaughn roofing hatchet. Neck is splintering but it holds an edge well enough to get by. Anyone have suggestions for a super cheap budget hatchet for carving? When I say budget, I mean I am on SSDI and they give me below cost of living and I trade off a week of food money for a 50$ purchase, kind of budget.

i carve with radiata select, sycamore, eastern pine, poplar, cedar... Use to carving with these woods, unless i can find some linden or basswood dead fall.... I really sympathize with those that carve Southern Yellow or some chippy wood really meant for building.

Thank you Sir, I carve pine spruce and such with a couple of knives I made from sawsall blades. I did some snowmen from sycamore branches. I enjoy carving the “Christmas “ trees just 1x3 white wood whatever that is you will learn to watch the grain. The sycamore carved O.K. just had to let it dry a couple months but it was hard. Very nice video!! You are one great carver😊 Just a little tip. When you carve their shoes, chip away a piece under the toes. This give the shoes a little bend upwards, making it look more realistic and a nice shadow effect👍

Hard pine is not as 'friendly' for sure. I learned that on my first carving, before I knew about Bass. It was a ball in a cage too! Rough. Yours of course looks up to par. I think your little community could use a little Finn! 🙂

I learned my lessen with no carving glove this week. I got a small cut on the side of my left thumb, nothing bad I got 2 days ago and it is almost gone, then yesterday I was carving with my Mora 120 and poke myself in the top bend of my left pointer finger. I think I am going to start wearing a glove on my left hand, it has taken some abuse.

I've been carving some poplar and that stuff is hard and not so easy to carve, but it seems to take well to detail. It is some green firewood that we cut and is drying. Cool carve. Stay safe!
