Everyone is freaking out about what went down at the 2024 World Series of Poker Main Event final table. Jonathan Tamayo had a group of friends on the sidelines who were using laptops. Further investigation shows that they had poker engine software, and it's clear that they were coaching Tamayo on how to navigate this prestigious No Limit Hold'em Tournament. But is this against the rules? If so, what are the repercussions? And if not, what can we do about it? Let's dive in.

hey doug the white thing passed to the guy look at it close its the end of headphone jack that has a mic as you look closely. my first thought its some sort of adaptor that plugs into the headphone jack that will allow 2 way coms. that could easily have a small rumbler in it to signal him on things on the table. and would be very low power. the gaming commision needs to review all of the tape and him side by side and see if they do something on the laptop or another device and see what his reactions are and how quick. plus pull that guy who is not cheering as he one thats guilt LOL speaking as a father its written all over his face he was doing something wrong.

@lou-meatskavitch - it would be a pretty straightforward ruling and would only serve to rack up attorneys fees. If you had an un protected hand and the dealer mucked it, it would be on you for not protecting your cards. If you suspect collusion, it’s on you to call the floor. If you are being angled, on you. Not nearly on the level, but I was playing 2 weeks and a player at the table folded his cards by pushing them with his chip stack. I said: you angle shooting bastard, had I been the hand the floor would be on his way over. The dealer then warned him. The point is, most rules violations that we see, have to be called by the player for a ruling. I have no doubt, that had Griff called the floor over, action would have been taken. It’s a bit of a shame that it happened to an amateur who started with a 4:1 chip advantage and got picked apart. Most pros, even the ones that have a habit of walking to the rail excessively would have been curious about what was going on, or would have sent one of his pro buddies on his rail to walk over and investigate further.

@@ColtonWilson3000 Well I have really bad news for you every player there has a rail and most have other pros on that rail reviewing the previous hands and giving advice. The software was NOT being used in a hand, it was being used to review hands from before. As far as live poker dying off, are you daft? Really do you think anyone in the tournaments you probably play at have a team of GTO Wizard pro's standing by to review hands? Really you think that? Also since very few tournaments have cams and steamed play with hole cards where will the $1000 buy in games you might play in get all that data? I certainly agree that this is an extreme example and should never be allowed at the table or within the event hall. But what will you allow? If I have friends by the rail and I ask them "Hey what did you think about my bet size on the turn card", and I do that between hands am I cheating? If between hands if I choose to read "War and Peace" would that be OK... well what about if I instead read a book on GTO poker? I just wonder where the line is drawn, and how is it enforced. You are only going to see this level of "help" at the highest level games and that should and can be policed by the floor.

It’s been happening for many years. Laptops, tablets, etc on the rail to watch the stream and relay the big hands to the player. Thats been happening forever and WSOP has known and doesn’t care. Obv this is different, and there needs to be a more clear rule. There shouldn’t be electronic devices used on the rail, or at the very least the player can’t look at one no matters whose it is. Just make this a very very clear rule. Send an announcement about it on social media, remind them at the FT, etc. Then if it’s broken, a warning is a one round penalty immediately. That’s first and only warning and it’s not a no penalty warning, blinding out a round is rough. Do it again? DQ. It’s that simple. If that was in place and they told them it was in place at the FT, this never happens. Nobody puts one ounce of blame on the numerous top casino brass that was there including the head TD, and the billion cameras. If they saw something they didn’t like, they should’ve said something. There’s a 0% chance they didn’t see it. They said nothing.

No come on, people fold queens pre in deep stack cash games worth a quarter of the pay jump he was looking at. You can’t rope legitimate ICM pressure into using a solver on the rail. The sim that his rail was running had real time stack depths. I don’t mind the paywall, but I didn’t pay. I was surprised to learn he overcame a 4:1 chip disadvantage. Can’t say data didn’t play a role in that.

As a fan who is terrible at poker but enjoys watching it, the idea that I could imagine myself sitting at one of those tables is alluring despite the inherent absurdity. I can imagine myself signing up for the tournament, flying out to the tournament, checking into my hotel room, and then last, but definitely not least, going on a sun-run to end all sun-runs and cashing. What I cannot imagine is organizing to bring two friends with a laptop, a solver, an earpiece, and a sub to the live stream, who are all committed to sitting on the rail and coaching me through the entire thing. I would say, at the very least, this breaks the fourth wall in a non-comedic way and tarnishes part of the mystique associated with Poker.

This is a legitimate issue that needs to be addressed. It's assanine and horrible for the optics of the game. It completely goes against the spirit of being heads up against your opponent, it should only be you against your fellow man, no assistance, no one else providing input. Do all the studying and solver work you can stomach ON YOUR OWN TIME prior to being at the table. Imagine being able to consult Chat GPT in the middle of a fucking exam, lmao. This will crush the poker economy and only acts as a deterrent to those who are curious about starting out. Pretty soon it will just be robots vs. robots, which is insanely sad.

Before hitting the like for your shockingly harsh and much too rational "one person, no tech, no talk, no coach" proposal, I had in my stupid non-poker head the idea that Poker was an individual sport. You know like.. like Golf.. like Bowling.. like Hot Dog Eating. But really.. to see no action or interest in your SIMPLE SOLVE TO DISADVANTAGE ADVANTAGE, thus making out "fairness for all" as being on the same NO-BRAINER LEVEL mirroring another of the presumedly unarguable poker rules that calls for everyone beginning play with the "same-sized stack" of chips. Silly.. so silly of me. They allow sunglasses indoors to hide tells which all the wearers DENY as any advantage. So much sometimes, they argue it's ONLY to get into an opponent's mindset. Not advantageous? Okay.. the right to fashion trumps it. Same with Hoodie.. but what if the right to Fashion.. comes with an earplug to the coaches? Doesn't Patrick Mahones wear a solver piece in the huddle, not for fashion, and he doesn't separated from his money for it? But everyone can use the hearing aid.. if none of other final table guys don't care.. does that not override any regular rule? Instantaneously in effect.. when the six other sunglassed hooded actually wired up to universal cheat sheets or outside calculations or feeds or (just?) playing mind games.. when all the guys there.. agree to abrogate the existing legal guidelines and delineated penalties.. then it's been "declassified" by me and my friends? For forevermore usage.. and YOU CAN'T STOP IT.. CAN'T STOP US.. so get over it.. SNOWFLAKE? Any of this.. extrapolated.. sound at all familiar. Seemingly, if some of your consenting friends have regular jobs.. like say on the Supreme Court.. this is just like "other violations of liberty" getting STUFFED DOWN THROATS.
