I have cut all my dovetails by hand for years now but circumstances recently have me about to use one of these jigs. I became a very talented craftsman under the tutelage of a very good Englishmaker from the Barnsley shops. English makers are indeed real excellent craftsman. Here he is no exception...a very good maker and instructor...thank you for the upload...

There is no doubt that hand cut dovetails, done well, are both beautiful and strong. However, for many of us those days of care and precision are long gone and a template is the best way forward. Many thanks and good luck. Peter

This video inspired me to dig it out and try again

Hi Patrick, No router work looks good on plywood and I would not recommend it for dovetails. Stick with solid wood or even MDF (although one does not get a very strong joint). Peter

@xoncention32659 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Great Presentation. The VRS Vacuum attachment is a nice addition to the dust collection process. The only limitation I have found is with routers with larger bases i.e. OF 2200, the fingers that capture the router base on either side don't permit the movement of the router to each extremity on the support. To overcome this I remove these two guide fingers and position the vacuum capture intake manually within the routing area.

Hi Peter. Great videos on the Leigh Jig. I upgraded my D4R to the Pro status but have not yet used it for the single pass HB dovetails. Just a mention about the VRS dust attachment. Mine came with 2 dust hose adapters that will allow the 27 and 36mm hose connections. I have also found the VRS to be great with one exception - when using the 5/16' (8mm) upcut spiral bit instead of the straight cutter, it produces great results but the chip extraction is upwards and then the standard OF1400 dust collection works better. Regards Les

@@NewBritWorkshop I bought an old dovetail rig and whilst I can join boards edge to edge, I cant make right angle joints, it can clamp both boards at right angles, but the top board stencil is 1.5"' away from the board and no way to rotate it (Like you need a route bit with a very long shaft), any ideas what this type of jig is and what its use is? I would action requests for plans from there and delete comments to protect users' email addresses. For the last 3 or 4 weeks I have not been receiving any requests for plans which is very odd - I usually get about 5 a day. I have sent a message to KZbin about this but they have not replied. @@NewBritWorkshop So the OF1400 arrived today. I have to say I'm blown away by the quality and accuracy. I fitted the Leigh adaptor. There is a tiny bit of play. Whether this would effect the cut, I'm not sure. I read on a Forum that Festool engineer said to push in a wood tooth pick an snap it off. I did this. It is rock solid and these just pop out when you release it. Takes about ten seconds to put them in. So if you compare this to having to screw this out if it was a fixed version it takes a lot less time. I placed it on my Leigh jig and it feels a lot more solid than my Trend T7 with no side to side play. I'd say it will be perfect. On top of that, the quality and accuracy of the fence and depth stop makes me think this is going to be an awesome all round router!!. Thanks for your videos, they are very inspiring and very well articulated! You have a great teaching method!

I tried to do some fingerjoints in plywood and the first try of making a box was amazing. Maybe it was beginners luck, but after that I keep getting lots of tearouts (I know plywood is hard in that way) but worked perfectly on my first box. I'm wondering if I did something genius the first time or it was pure luck? - Any good suggestions?
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonas, I can only guess from this distance but it may be that you were being very cautious the first time and took things slowly. If the tearout is underneath then you could try a sacrificial piece under your wood. If the tearout is at the side then it may help to take the cut down in stages. Is there a chance that your first session took the edge off the cutter? Or, maybe as you are using plywood the grain of the outer layers is running left to right instead of fore and aft. Peter
@JonasJCom7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thank you so much for your great reply. I think that helped me to find my mistake (I'm still very very new to woodworking) - half the boards I have cut so the grain is turned the wrong way. They are all still intact since I have only worked on scrape pieces so far on this project, but I can see the scrape pieces with the grain in the wrong direction are the pieces with the problems, the once with grain in the right works fine. Do you think I can save them by having an extra board in front of my piece when routing them? - or will I run into trouble no matter what having turned the grain the wrong direction?
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonas, It may help to have a sacrificial piece on front and it would be worth trying it with some of your scrap pieces. Good luck. Peter

Peter, do you have any plans for your Leigh D4 storage box? It looks a great idea and I could do with something similar for my D4 jig. I also have the upgrade kit and the VRS adapter too.
@NewBritWorkshop10 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, I do not have any plans for the D4 storage box but I can produce something next week. I am away from home until Monday and have no access to the box or my main computer. Please send me your email address by private message (reminding me it is for the D4 Box plans) and I will do my best to get something to you later next week. Peter

Hi Peter, that would be great thank you, not sure how to do the private message thing on here but will work it out. Ed.

Peter, I very much enjoy your videos. I know this is an older video, but if you still have the plans for the storage box, I too would love to have a copy. My email address is thrpydon@gmail.com. Thanks very much, and please keep your videos coming.

Hello Peter again. Can you tell me. do you use the Leigh guide bushing or a generic brand? The Porter Cable is a bit shallow and I fear riding up over the template Thx again
@NewBritWorkshop8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, I use Leigh guide bushing - they designed the jig and know what they are doing. Peter

Hello again Peter.. Well my good wife got me the VRS for Christmas and today I cut my first dovetails.. half blind. I AM SOOO excited! The very first one came out literally perfect! No room for glue. So I adjusted the bit depth and loosened it up a tad. You are right on the money about the manual! Oh my it is the BEST written instruction Ive ever read! Here is a link to my dropbox if you would like to see the pictures! Thank you for your inspiration friend! www.dropbox.com/sh/u33050u6tx7k4wm/AADvlRhupBPsZWg85e_ntgGya?dl=0

Peter, how can I get a copy of your plans for the jig platform/storage case?
@NewBritWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Hi David, In order to get plans or to contact me via email I need your email address. KZbin no longer has a private messaging service and so in order to get in touch you need to place a comment on this or any other video with your email address. The KZbin software should identify and send it to the spam folder for The New Brit Workshop. Nobody will be able to see your email address except you and me. I will then send you the plans and delete your comment so that it does not end up in the public domain. Were we to do this the other way around then my comment, with my email address, would appear for all the world to see. Please let me know which plans you need each time you get in touch. Peter

Informative videos, Peter. Thank you. Are we able to purchase your plans for the case that holds the jig? We have no way of sending PMs now.
@NewBritWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Hi Malcolm, Now that KZbin have removed the PM capability it seems that normally comments that contain an email address get put in my "Held for Review" section and not displayed to the world. I respond to these if they are requests for plans and then delete them in order to protect the email address. You now should have your plans. Peter

Did you happen to make a video build of your Leigh Jig box? I really enjoy watching your videos... very informative as well as superbly produced! Keep up the great work! Cheers
@NewBritWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, No I am afraid not. I built that box before I owned anything that could shoot video ! I do supply the plans free of charge and include a few images of the box that will help construction. All I need is an email address in order to send out the plans. Peter

Great tutorial thank you. Quick question.. Do you not cut both the pins and tails simultaneously as you do on a Porter Cable Omnijig for example? Thank you
@NewBritWorkshop8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, No I do not and that is how the original D4 was intended to be used. However, you can now cut both if you wish with the latest machine but I prefer my pins and tails to vary in size. Peter

Thank you Peter. I picked a D4 up at a public auction and am anxious to start making sawdust. Great tutorial btw.

Why did you do the tails and then the pins, instead of doing both in one pass at the same time?
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
+matermark My original D4R had to be used in two separate operations; tails and pins. The new D4R Pro does allow tails and pins to be done in one pass. Peter

+New Brit Workshop (Peter) Thanks for your reply. They have an update/upgrade kit that includes a plastic spacer clip that offsets the vertical board a half finger and a plastic length of rod, similar to a coat hanger wire straightened out, that goes through the fingers acting as a limiter reducing the depth the router can travel in the fingers... plus an adjustable router bushing that is oval which gives you more fine tuning; it's the most expensive part of the upgrade kit, which totals ~$29US. I could only afford used, and recently got a good deal on the Super 18, with both the full router bit set and the VRS kit. Haven't used it yet, still learning the manual! Take care and don't lose any fingers!

It’s a whole lot easier just to cut them by hand......This is a nice demo though, thanks for showing this.
@NewBritWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, Hand cut dovetails get more difficult as the old arthriticiness sets in though and some people prefer the ease of a jig. There is one point about this that everyone should understand - hand cut dovetails, done well, look so much better. Peter
