Looking good so far! Nice to see something like this built from scratch. I have an old(er) Sandvik back saw that needs the blade cleaned up, plus a new handle that I'll be doing soon, so I'll be watching yours with interest.

why buy shim stock and not sheet stock of 1095 whats the difference
@albertrasch479310 жыл бұрын
No difference, but the technical name for steel stock that is exactly its measurements, in this case .020 inch, is "shim."

How much for the shim stock?
@mikescncshop10 жыл бұрын
McMaster Carr has.020 x 6"x 25" 1095 spring steel shim stock for $18.12. Should be enough for 4 dovetail saws. I think they have some smaller sizes like 6" x 12" also. So you can see that compared to the price of a new saw, this stuff is pretty cheap. Bontz saw works sell kits with brass backs, bolts, and a blade with teeth already cut. You have the option of sharpening it yourself or having them sharpen it for you.

Haha that's funny, I was recommended Mcmaster by my local steel company. I ordered the exact item you described plus a small single cut metal file. I'm just having difficulty finding a brass strip now. Maybe I'll order it from that site.
