Down Hermit Across Tonto Up Bright Angel [10h32m]

Be Advised, this hike was more than 24 miles (40KM) total. I don't recommend this for anyone to do in one day. This is often done as a backpacking trip, where you would spend multiple nights. Do your research, talk to the park staff, be safe out there.

Thought you might like this comment... in 1972 my parents and I ( I was 10 at the time ) did this exact hike. I can tell you we were at that time allowed to drive to the top where the hermit trail starts... I believe today you must take a shuttle.... I took us 4-5 days as I recall.... we did it during the summer, and it was hot at the bottom. There were very very few people the entire trip, up and down both trails..... also, I recall from Flagstaff north, there were no gas stations, the hotels and all the gas stations a few miles south of Grand Canyon Village did not exist. It was much like it had been in the 1940s / 1950s compared to today. It truly seemed like a remote place , at that time compared to a few years ago when I re visited after 45 some odd years.... Glad you got to do this.... It is a bucket list thing.... I think.

That's an adventure. Amazing that you'd got in the Canyon at such a young age. I didn't show up until my 30s and I'll do everything I can to help promote less development. The world definitely needs to preserve the remote nature we have left.

That you! I was really burning that "new year" energy last January. The plan was to build up to my first Rim2Rim2Rim in less than 24 hours, but 2020 wasn't my year for that. Hopefully this year (2021) I can go for it.

Great video and thanks for the historical and geological perspectives. I did that hike (with side detours and days along the river) as a 5 day trip. Amazing you did it in one day. Dont recommend this for most folks! First couple days killed me I was unprepared to be honest. Still, I think that it is worth it, spending whole days and nights in different parts of the canyon, and certainly by the river. Seeing the full moon rise over the canyon wall and then seeing it glowing red in the morning sun, sitting in the cliff staring at the river below while ravens caulk. feeling sudden storms blow in followed by rainbows, camping out at the beach with a beer, watching rafts capsize in the rapids, all worthwhile endeavors that take a lot of time.

Oh that's a good hike Krocky! The scenery was beautiful. I thought so much time had gone by I worried about ascent, but sure enough Tonto came out near Indian Garden much higher than I thought. I LOVE your videos! As time has gone by, I don't think a hike into GC is possible anymore for me. I am still hoping though. The thin air kills me. I am def a flatlander.

Wow....I remember the situation at the bottom...wondering and back tracking a little bit - trying to figure out where exactly the trail was. Amazing.... you did this in one day. We stayed one night just at the bottom of the hermit trail by the rusty equipment...the bottom where the cable lift thingy was.... The next night was down by the Colorado river by monument rock. The final night near the bottom of the bright angel trail..... Amazing video....

@@GrandCanyonTV Yes. Lived in Phoenix 1963-1966; then grad school in Las Cruces,NM. Started with the Boucher; quickly fell in love with the canyon. I led several trips with Southwestern Mountaineers, our campus club--Hance-Grandview; Tanner-Hance. Last major GC walk was Nankoweap, the only one that unnerved me--just myself and two boys--but it turned out fine. After that, I lived in Wisconsin and Maine so GC became harder. Finally became a decrepid old fart but KZbin brings memories. I'm happy that the trails still look much like they did 60 years ago.

The ones I'm using in these videos are YakTrax (not sure what they call the type or model, I can't find them online right now), anything strong and spiky will do well. I like the simple rubber slip on kind, because you will likely be taking them on and off. And it's nice to have something lightweight to clip on your bag when they're not in use.

Awesome! That will be good to spend a few days doing it. There are taxi services in the park. Xanterra Taxi Service (24 hours) 928-638-2631, but I'm not sure if they service hermit road.
