Had the U.S. Navy actually conducted an exercise like that, they would have used a different submarine - one that was more easily made operational and actually Refitted like the U.S.S. Razorback SS-394, another Balao class boat which you can visit today in North Little Rock, Arkansas. She's still intact without the visitor's access cut into the hull like with the Pampanito you see clearly at the end of the film. In fact, if it wasn't for the propellers having been removed and torpedo tubes being Demilled, she'd still be considered operational! I think they chose Pampanito because she was clearly a WWII style boat... and the Razorback was still in service with the Turkish Navy as the T.C.G. Muratreis S-336...

@mikeoyler2983 Жыл бұрын
I was just reading the wikipedia page and, well sort of. It depends which sub you mean. The USS Stingray was an actual submarine during World War II and belonged to the Salmon Class submarines. These were built in the 1930s and were the first American submarines to fight in battle against the Japanese during the war. However, they had certain technical problems, so they were phased out in favor of newer submarines. The submarine that the audience sees in the film is the USS Pampanito which was a Balao Class submarine. It had a very distinguished career during and after the war. However, one of the most notable incidents is that the crew accidentally torpedoed a ship carrying 1350 British and Australian POWs most of whom died. It has been a museum ship since 1975.
