My Trainer told me to wake him up before I got there, it was night time, I decided to give it a go, but it became so foggy I had to wake him up and he actually had to get out and walk the line about 8 feet in front of the truck. I swear though, we heard a truck go by us very fast, never saw a thing, he said something about it being the "Ghost Truck".

Did my first solo Cabbage westbound in winter. The weather was sh*t so I waited out the chain laws and followed the plows. July and the one going into SLC (forget the name) are a little crazier to me due to traffic, but I agree with the other posters about the East. While the hills are shorter, running 7% + grades with 45,000 lbs of paper in back will suck me to the seat every time.

The only thing ya have to worry about with such a light load is losing traction on wet pavement. If it's wet, just excercise caution. Wind is also an issue between the base of the Cabbage and The Dulles, so check ur weather for any high wind advisories. Other than that .... a light load should make the first trip down the Cabbage a real easy one! (Assuming it's not snowing). Hell Canyon runs from Baker City to (mm304) through approx mm255, The actual highest point is about mm248 or so .... it's higher in elevation than Cabbage Hill. The canyon gets nasty snowfall and ice if the weather is bad. Carry chains of course, Oregon requires all tires on Drive Axle chained, and also drag chains on the trailer (two tires on opposite sides of same trailer axle). Make sure you have the proper chains with you for any winter driving in Oregon. I've seen the DOT set up at mm265 and write tickets for those that aren't prepared. They even cruise through the Flying J there and spotlight parked trucks looking for the ones they can write as soon as they venture out of the truckstop, There is a rest stop at the mm228 that is a good place to do a final brake check, and also one by the weigh station at approx mm224 if you don't want to leave the highway. You'll be fine. Its a short grade compared to others. I-80 from Reno to Auburn is 40 miles of downgrade, compared to Cabbage at 6 miles. You got to be really in trouble to have brake problems on Cabbage if you are doing things right goin' down. Take your time and watch out for the others (4-wheelers & Big Trucks), coz they are the ones that can hose up a good day. When reacting to what others are doing it can cause you to break your pace or force you to perform unplanned and unwanted braking. If no other traffic it would be easy to get around on these mountain passes, The traffic is what generally screws ya up! Let us know how it went!!! Good Luck!!

Back in the day we didn't have trucks. We had mules. One of the mules was named "Jake" and every hour we had to give him a rest. We called it the "Jake break". He made a lot of noise going down the hill on the way into town. Woke everybody up. People got mad but what could they do? We were carrying beer. And the mail. And now and then, a freelance dancehall girl. Wound up selling Jake to a rich fat chick. Rumor has it she had an act in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in which Jake played a significant role. Delicacy forbids me from relating exactly what that role was but it was banned in every state except Kansas.

My dad said Cabbage Hill, Donner Pass, and 4 July Pass in a truck would make his butt pucker and stick to the seat an gray hairs on top in the winter.He flat out does not like driving in the northwest during the winter but, as he said someones got to do it.But, I got to say as a drivers daughter more power to you and be safe out there on the road. By the way has anyone heard about when the E Logs are going into effect? Thank you. Amber
@SurviveTheTime10 жыл бұрын
Yeah Amber ... some of these grades can be a bit scary in the winter for sure, but "generally" speaking it's managable. Most brake failure accidents are a result of improperly adjusted and/or maintained air brakes ..... Most accidents involving loss of control are a result of excessive speed for the conditions, and this too is a factor that the driver should be able to control. My biggest anxiety on the highway (in any weather) is "the other guy", whether it be 4-wheeler or another Big Truck ... ya just can't guess what they might do, which introduces a big UNKNOWN into what should be a managable risk. Stupidity Kills. The new ELOG rules are still being written and finalized, and I think last draft was adopted in March 2014, and scheduled to be implemented in 1st qtr 2015 unless it gets derailed sometime between now and then. Thanks for your great comment!!
@FortWorthPro201010 жыл бұрын
You are right about the 4 wheeler's out there they just do not understand what is like to drive a Big Truck and watch out for other drivers.I was just talking to Dad yesterday on the phone and he had talk about proper brake adjustment and air brake system maintaince ( which when I work in the shop with him that was always the first thing that we did to every truck before leaving the shop) and control over all coming down and up the grade is Number 1. As you said Stupidity Kills. Thanks and Keep Safe on the road. Amber

I had always heard this is one of the worst hills to go down in the country. From the video, it didn't look that bad to me. I thought that I-40 west coming out of North Carolina was a little tough, but veteran drivers told me that's nothing compared to cabbage hill. I don't know. Anyone know what that steep hill in California (not Donner's pass) is called?
@SurviveTheTime10 жыл бұрын
From Donner's to Auburn is a long 40 mile downgrade with a series of 4%, 5% & 6% intermediate downgrades. You are probably referring to Emigrant Gap, which is just part of that long extended downgrade west of Donner's Pass, and Emigrant Gap is the location where CHP requires all Big Trucks to stop and perform a brake check prior to proceeding. The I-5 Grapevine (Northbound) is pretty nasty, with downhill speeds limited to 35mph, though it's only a few miles long. I seen alot of smokin' brakes on the Grapevine. The goal is simply not to use your brakes, or use them as little as possible. When the brakes are used, the weight of the truck v.s. the speed of the truck on the grade causes the brakes to heat up very fast, and when the brake drum can no longer dissipate the heat from the application of the brakes ... the trouble begins. You have to NOT get to the point where you have hot brakes, or things can go bad very quickly. The heavier you are, the more braking you need (engine and/or service brakes). The faster you are moving, the more braking force is required to keep the truck from free wheeling down the grade due to loss of brakes. No grade is really worse than another I think, if you are doing things right. But goin' too fast with a load, even a short downgrade can get someone killed. The real challenge is winter driving, when compression brakes are used less (or not at all) and icy conditions exist. I have come over Sherman Hill (I80 Wyoming) on ice packed roads as slow as 15mph. It's only 2 miles long! Thanks for your post!

I-40 west coming out of North Carolina is the gorge it's just windy and narrow, not very steep. Black mountain on 40 eastbound is the descent just east of Asheville and Swanannoa. It's uphill going west

Too bad there isn't a regeneration unit on these trucks where you could charge a lithium battery pack. That's a lot of free energy going to waste. Not exactly free because it was expended going up the hill but it would be nice to recover it on the descent. Or most of it, anyway. I might design an electric motor that's integrated with the drive shaft. A "lugger motor". Wouldn't have to be very large. High torque. It could even move the truck around the yard on its own.
@DRTY3RD6 жыл бұрын
I've often wondered how big truck manufacturers have yet to engineer an RBS for big trucks (regenerative braking--transit buses have had the technology for years.) All the energy expended by braking gets fed into the bus's battery to use as a hybrid energy source. I'd think one of these days we may see something similar on to the big rigs.
@258shoff8 жыл бұрын
question. so, you're in 8th gear letting the Jakes take you down the hill, now if it was slick to the point no Jake brakes could be used would you put it down to 6th? I've never not gone down a mountain without jakes,whether it be snowing, or heavy rain which may be foolish but going down without Jake brakes will make the revs scream won't they?

@survivethetime244211 жыл бұрын
Hey Doc, sorry if the trainee comment offended you, but if you are going to be truckin', you better develop a thicker skin. Trainers risk their lives teaching students how to drive, or better stated "How NOT to drive". In a 3000lb car, you can make a few mistakes and get through it without kiiling yourself or others, but in an 40 ton truck it's a whole different reality. I wasn't bashin new drivers, just stating facts. Most of the "Company Trainers" ONLY make money once they get the trainee to a TEAM environment and so they generally will climb in the sleeper LONG before they should and allow the trainee to drive alone unsupervised. This is a very dangerous job for the trainer. Many of the COMPANY MENTOR programs now have company drivers certifying the drivers for the DOT. Many of these guys are getting there CDL without every testing (real test) with a DOT officer. Once you get some miles under your belt, you will better understand my perspective, Last month, a CRENGLAND driver wiped out a DOT sandtuck in Indiana during an ice storm, killing the driver. Everyday, a rookie driver does something stupid in MY space, endangering himself, me and anyone around us. You will see it once you get out here and you will agree. You will shake your head and wonder how the guy ever got a sign off. I had a Martin driver ask me if I would back his truck into the HOLE at a truck stop because he didnt know how to park. I refused. I told him he had no business driving if he couldn't even park the truck. There are a miilion stories. They all revolve around drivers not being trained properly or fully. I admire trainers for the job they do, but there is NO WAY I would ever do it. Good luck. Always stay ahead of your truck and stay safe. I'm sure you will be one of the good ones ..... but you will, as I do ...have to share your space with those that are in need of further training, and those that also have no business driving at all. Cabbage Hill is easy .... just don't use your brakes! Use the engine and enjoy the ride. Cheers comrade and welcome aboard.
