First trip after getting my CDL and my trainer is asleep in the back as i hit Cabbage around 1am in the rain. Now i grew up in mountains of Idaho and Eastern Washington so i am not exactly a stranger to them. But a fully loaded trailer and first full shift by myself, i won't lie scared the hell out of me going down that. I was nervous to begin with when i realized i would be driving it, my grandfather already warned me about it as an old timer trucker in the Inland Pacific North West. I don't think i breathed the whole way down it. Lol.

Even if it were bad for the engine, smoking your brakes on one of the 5 deadliest passes in the country is even worse for your life.

Love your choice of mountain to video "CABBAGE". First time I rolled off her it was daylight 6" snow & ice underneath. 1997 wasn't too scary until last big long curve. Beginner drivers were all making a lot of mistakes. I was pulling Dry Van full of Styrofoam cups...Sh t is right...slid right! slid to the left! asked for help on CB. Ole timer calmly says ride down the center. That's what I did! Old timer, I've survived many big ass mountains. Never let my guard down.

Awesome video 👍👍👍👍, brings back a lot of memories for me. I’ve gone up and down that hill many times in semi’s pulling 53”s and doubles🤪🤪🤪🥃🥃🥃👍. Every time I got down to the bottom on that long straight stretch I always gave a couple of long blasts on the air horn’s in celebration that I made it in one piece. A story one time in that day like you had in your video I’ve heard old timers tell about driving trucks downhill that the brakes with oil on them would heat up to the point of blue smoke coming out and they would ride out to the bottom no problem. Well one time as I was approaching the downhill a old Kenworth log truck painted rattle can yellow pulled out from a side road loaded with logs and I said to myself I hope he’s going east , NOPE west bound behind me. So as I was going down hill I did double duty keeping an eye straight ahead and the other on that old Kenworth hauling logs. It wasn’t long before blue smoke was pouring out of his brakes, it looked like the hole truck was on fire and he was right behind me. But I knew what was happening and he made it all the way to the bottom no problem, but what a show👍👍👍🥃🥃👍😎😎

From John McPhee's great piece "A Fleet of One": We were crossing the Blue Mountains - on I-84, the Oregon Trail. He said "Before you know it, we'll be sitting on top of Cabbage. Then we're going to fall down." He had mentioned Cabbage Hill when we were still in the Great Divide Basin. He mentioned it again in Pocatello. After crossing into Oregon and drawing closer, he brought it up twice an hour. "It's the terrific hill we fall down before we come to Pendleton. Pretty treacherous. Switchbacks. Speed restricted by weight. You'll see guys all the time with smoke flying out the brakes or even a flameout at the bottom."

Can't give you an answer. Everything must be considered when going up or down. What kind of transmission? How much do you weigh? Where's most of your weight? How long are you? etc etc etc Gotta know your truck and your load. It's always gonna be different.
