I think you and I started on similar paths. It was late night Toonami/Adult Swim stuff in the early 2000s that got me into not just anime, but learning about the original Japanese. Like, I was reading FMA monthly in middle school while everyone was waiting for the original run's dubbed episodes to come out. So when I was like "yea, no, this doesn't happen" my friends couldn't comprehend. Got me started YOUNG on that fan translation stuff.

My rabbit hole, other than the anime mp3s downloading craze, was, believe it or not, finding a fan site that cataloged music used on The Weather Channel! It helped get me into jazz / new age music.

I dove off the deep end of the webcomics rabbit hole when i was in 7th ish grade, and there are a few that I still follow to this day, though most of those aren't that deep in anymore. Gunnerkrigg is getting picked up by dark horse, QC hasn't missed an update in over twenty years (that I know of), NAV is about to pick back up. Currently it's webfiction that is consuming my time, though; I've lost so many hours browsing through the sites where the line between fan-fic and original works blurs, where the quality ranges from Stephanie Meyer to Terry Pratchet. I think part of the draw of it is the unfiltered enthusiasm for the things I would never think too deeply about otherwise.

I think my biggest rabbithole that I don't consider simply just indulging in my special interests is The Backrooms. Funnily enough, it started with a random "Gangster Spongebob" meme I randomly found on Instagram that parodied different video game endings, then I go on KZbin to find if there's an original post for that meme -> Ended up finding more different "video game endings for something that isn't a video game" videos such as the Immortal Snail memes -> Ended up finding a whole bunch of fake video game ending videos for The Backrooms, which introduced me to the aforementioned 'internet folk tale' of The Backrooms and ended up leading up to me watching hours and HOURS of liminal space compilation videos/video essays

Here is a list of some of the rabbit holes I been down on. - Korean Ben 10 Manwha with its own stories and characters that are exclusive to that book with education stuff thrown in like Science and English - a Japanese forum called ReadmeGirls that talked about Ben 10 and a lost Ben 10 manga from one of the corro corro magazines - mostly obscure video game tie in manga thats ether rare or lost like the many Sonic ones, Klonoa and a whole lot more - a Spider Man 3 pachinko machine (and a ton of other Spidey ones) that has cutscenes that look like something from house of the dead with a full Japanese VA cast, so if you ever wanted to here the Raimi Spider Man characters in Japanese now you can - a lot of Spider Man and Venom Doujinshi, not really much of a surprise but just know if theres a series you like chances are there is a Doujin for it - anime as Windows operators, 00s character mascots called ghosts who are virtual assistants for your computer like Digital Witch Mayura being one of the well more well known ones and just obscure otaku and anime stuff from the 90s and 00s - NiGHTS into Dreams just in general theres a lot obscure and lesser known merch out there especially with the story book that was Japan only and I got a lot of my info threw the old fan website NiGHTSintoDreams.com Its still up just hasn't been updated in years and a lot of the older stuff on like the fan videos and music have been sadly lost to time And thats pretty much it or at least the ones I found the most interesting to mention or bring up :>

Also, I got up to One Piece not too soon after you did. I got caught up as Thriller Bark was kicking off in the manga.
