I noticed something at 9:13. The shape of the castle garden opening stage looks just like the shape of an N64 console. I wonder if that's deliberate?

Oh wow, you're actually right, ha! I think it's probably a coincidence since both are essentially squares with rounded corners, but dang if it ain't the truth!

wasnt the metal mario texture actually just an image of a garden with flowers outside and it was skewed in such a way that it looked metallic?

Yes, the texture image itself is a fisheye image of a flower garden, which was used in all sorts of metal texture renders since it was on Silicon Graphics machines, which were what the N64 was developed on. The original Metal Mario is a cow model called "Buttercup" to tie in with the flower theme -- all very interesting! (My next video, Part 3, goes over this a bit more, since Silicon Graphics is directly mentioned on the Mario iceberg!)
