The fact the game encourages you to try out different characters for different stars is a good idea and very much in spirit of the original. People always bemoan that every level kicks you out after collecting a star, but nobody ever points out that this might have been intentional. You're not meant to just do every star in every level from start to finish and then hop into the next one to repeat the process. Otherwise, you wouldn't have to unlock the different caps or even stars to open doors. You go into one stage, get one or two stars, and then check out the next room. By locking certain stars behind different characters, this is emphasized. Go play as Luigi for a while, see what you can achieve as him. Maybe Yoshi can do something Mario can't.

This makes sense. That's why you get those messages like, "Did you find the princess's slide? Why don't you go look for it?"
@globalistgamer6418Ай бұрын
I think the main reason for the kick-out is so that the level content can be rebuilt for conflicting mission objectives (e.g. using the peak of the mountain in Bob-omb Battlefield as the goal of the Koopa the Quick race without having it be in the middle of a boss arena). This is a nice side-benefit, though. Generally, I think intentionally or not, removing kick-out tends to cause 3D platformers to lose focus on major, punctuating objectives and creates a tendency towards bite-sized and bland collectathon content. For that reason alone, I consider it basically an essential disciplining feature for top-quality 3D platformers.

@@globalistgamer6418I’d say Banjo and Spyro 1 prove otherwise, but using the best of the best as a representative of the whole concept isn’t fair. There are plenty whose objectives become less memorable in part because of the freedom to get all the collectibles in one run and the devs underestimating the amount of creativity and meticulous design it takes to make the pieces work both as part of a whole and as standalone objectives. I disagree to me that's a a false equivalency, 64 kicks you out of levels but most levels can still be completed with Mario with missions that require the vanish or metal caps being fairly uncommon in the grand scope of 64 and if you don't know how to complete level there's others in your general vicinity for you to attempt. 64 DS forces to back track to a specific room just to swap characters and always for missions where you did not need to backtrack in anyway such as the 8 Red Coin mission in Cool Cool Mountain, I don't agree at all that it keeps the spirit of the original it moreso just feels like an unneeded restriction to make the characters feel more important

It seems like a lot of collect-a-thons with ensemble casts struggle with making their Heavies into cumbersome walking keys. I feel like they should take a page from kart racers' Heavyweights; making your Chunkys and Warios slower to get moving, but giving them the highest top speeds for high skill players. Like imagine if this Wario had his tackle from the Wario Land games, but it was finicky to steer; so players willing to reach that high skill ceiling can make him as desirable as Luigi.
@robertlauncherАй бұрын
The thing is, Wario Land 4 in particular had given Wario a high speed style of gameplay that sadly, Nintendo has ignored for the rest of his history. Unless you count the speed cannons in Shake It!! that are only there to make the escape sequences go faster.

the Render96 mod for the PC decomp actually does this! fun fact about Wario: he can punch away those huge moving box enemies in the desert level with the pyramid. I literally just found this out last night by pure chance despite playing this game since its release I feel conflicted about the controls, in retrospect I can see that they're pretty rough but I find them more comfortable than the original N64 version, probably because i'm used to the different physics and whatnot. but man, I love this game so much. One of my most vivid memories is from school, me and like 7 other kids all had the game but none of us knew how to unlock Luigi and Wario. One other kid shows up one day with his DS and we all find out he's got everyone unlocked, so the next day we all bring our own DS's and this kid unlocked them for each of us. We all crowded around him like he was Jesus or something lol. I also got a copy of the game on a R4 card at some point that allowed me to access test levels and go into any level as Yoshi, I recall one of the bosses actually having unique dialogue for him, despite there being no legit way for yoshi to ever get there. Interestingly there was also a cheat that could give any character wings or the metal ability, even both at the same time. If Yoshi was given wings they would appear on his back. The mutually exclusive powerups for certain characters was a strange choice given how everyone can still technically use some of them.

I have played this through with the thumb stylus. It’s far better than the dpad and you don’t have to awkwardly use B to run, but the N64 analog stick is still considerably better. I also played it with the circle pad patch for the 3DS and I found them to be equal at that point. DS uses the wall jump from Sunshine, which to me is a considerable improvement over the original, but as you mentioned the side jump is fairly useless in DS. I think this is because you build your speed slower in DS, which means you have to wait longer to use the side jump, at which point you’ve gone too far to use it to get up to higher places. So it depends on whether you prefer a better wall jump or side jump. If you use the thumb stylus you can switch the controls to Touch Mode. This maps the camera controls to X and Y, which along with the improved camera control is a massive improvement over the original. You have to use the touch screen to zoom in and out, but u didn’t find that to be much of a problem. With the analog patch and a New 3DS you can leave the control in Standard Mode and still use the analog stick. This allows you to use X to zoom in and out and ZL/ZR or the c stick to control the camera. You can also use the dpad to easily walk slowly, though you can use the analog stick if you want. I didn’t play any version until last year. I have since played the original NTSC version, DS with the thumb stylus, DS with the analog patch on a New 3DS and the Shindou edition, all on original hardware. I like them both equally, for different reasons.

Hello, I am the psychopath who played the entire game with the thumb strap as a 15 yo lad. It was far from ideal, but devs could be forgiven. It wasn't actually discovered until around late 2008 that the Nintendo DS had physical buttons. A German scientist was playing Final Fantasy Tactics A2, and unknowingly bumped the D-pad, moving his on screen cursor. Later research teams launched investigations that revealed A, B, X, Y face buttons. It wasn't until 2010 that we discovered the should L and R buttons but most DS Lite microswitches had oxidized by then, rendering the buttons useless.

Good remake, bad system. SM64DS is an amazing remake, they didn't have to go so far as to have 4 playable characters, completely new levels, a new star for each course and changing up level design. Bad system not as in the DS is bad, but it's not a good system for this remake to be on, if it was on the Nintendo Switch (3ds would be forgotten) it would sell much better, but instead Nintendo neglects this version and just emulates the N64 version
@myfishisnothappy1595Сағат бұрын
The Switch is awful, Ds and 3Ds to this day are the best system by far. What are you talking about??? Ds had GBA compatibilty, Guitar hero add ons... 3DS had the 3D... The Switch has video out, that PSP introduced years before, can't emulate DS nor 3DS games, and is not clamshell design, so it always needs a protection bag or something... it doesn't even have a proper N64 emulator... and MarioDS came out in 2004... back then it was a technological marvel... they ported it because they needed to show the DS capabilites and oh boy they did..
@varietychanСағат бұрын
@myfishisnothappy1595 I am not talking about systems in general. I am talking about how the DS is a bad system to put Mario 64 on, not in general. If SM64DS was being made for the Nintendo Switch then the controls wouldn't feel so off as they'd be made with joystick in mind. The game being made for the DS means they had to make a lot of changes in order to try and compensate for the dpad. In the end it feels unnatural because it is made with dpad in mind, the main control schyme (it's not touch control, that is not the control set that they promote). The limited movement of 8 directions is not the problem, I can play both SM64 and SM64DS on keyboard and still get a fluid experience with the N64 version. It is the DPAD being so close together and not as easy to use as a keyboard

"Bad remake" is a bit much, it was pretty cool being able to play Mario 64 on the go. And the new content and minigames were really fun. What really killed the game and made me prefer the original, was the controls and how the movement felt. The controls in 64 DS are fine. And that's the issue. "Fine" is a gigantic downgrade from the original Mario 64 controls, that other 3D platformers struggle to capture to this day. It's seriously insane how much they perfected the movement back in the day, and even though the levels and stars were, let's be honest, pretty rudimentary, it was the controls and movement that really carried it. Downgrade those brilliant controls down to "fine" like 64 DS did, and even with shitloads of added content, different playable plumbers and Yoshi, updated graphics, fundamentally it's still the same rudimentary level and star structure, and without the amazing controls, it's just not as fun. That's how I felt though, and I can definitely understand if people prefer 64 DS, especially if they didn't enjoy the original's controls.

I disagree with the controls being fine. Having to hold a run button and use that same finger to jump can cause physical pain in people. A run button shouldn't be a thing when 99% of the time you want to be running and jumping. This is pretty bad, and could've been solved by being a walk button.

As someone who has become antagonistic towards remakes in the last few years, 64 DS has always been a weird game for me. I love it, but based on the reasons I've become disappointed with remakes over the years, I shouldn't really like it. However I guess the reasons for me appreciating 64DS over other remakes are that it was done on a handheld, it added new characters and new content (stars, levels and minigames), and most importantly it didn't replace the original in Nintendo's eyes, as they have made original 64 easy to obtain in every single one of their home consoles since the Wii. Hell, it's easier to find original 64 than it is to find 64DS re-released. I guess I treat it more like its own thing rather than a "definitive" way to play Mario 64, the same way most remakes attempt to be. Because of how differently they play and because of the additional characters vs just Mario alone, they can both co-exist in my library as there's valid reasons to return to either.

Funny fact is that if you somehow manage to get a different character like say Yoshi to the bowser fight it actually spawns a Mario cap so you could beat the fight....but you can't bring Yoshi anyways at least as far as i can remember as you might be able to get there AFTER unlocking the door as Mario. But either way it is interesting how the game spawns a Mario cap for you when you are not playing as Mario in the bowser fights

With the render 96 mod and 3ds remakes of n64 games existing later on im surprised we never got mario 64. I wouldve liked to see another crack at it with a multiplayer co op mode

Super Mario 64 DS is the first Mario game I ever played as a kid and I’ve gotta say even to this day the game is still pretty goated

in my mind, it appears likely to me that the multiplayer mode of this game was likely only going to be 4 short competitive-ish levels and then a boss, and my evidence/other theory to support this is that they did this before with zelda four swords and were likely planning this for the GBA or something but decided that mario would look better on the new 3d system, and chose mario 64 and developed an improved story mode on the side, which became the main focus when they realized they weren’t going to be able to market a game that requires 4 players or something and cut the main mode and switched to plan B and probably copied certain things to the story mode, likely including chief chilly, king boo, and goomboss who i will assume were originally from the main 4 player mode

learning that Peach may've been a 5th playable character will never not bother me among other things. Also its pretty wild to think that there was a logical explanation as to why they decided to give her a ponytail in this game.

I swear. The controls are so divided on people. I don't mind if people have problems with it. But honestly I think the controls are way better and this game than the original. Maybe it's because I grew up playing. The DS is more than the 64 one. But I never had that much problems with the controls. Show more there are moments where I feel like. The characters do slide a bit more. And you can't really Move in the air that much. But I think it's a lot easier to walk jump. All of the game looks Pixelated I will say it's definitely a lot better the way the original look.

I didn't enjoy Mario 64 DS. Dunno if it was the tiny DS screen, D Pad or what but it didnt feel right at all.
@Rot8erConeX6 күн бұрын
You actually don't *need* Mario for the second Bowser stage (thanks to needing other characters to access Dire Dire Docks), and I think even the first one allows non-Mario characters to enter and fight Bowser. It's just that, as you said, only Mario can open the major star doors. But once they're open, anyone can use them. (Even Yoshi can go into the Bowser stage and do the platforming challenges, but without a punch/grab cannot fight Bowser) Except the 80-star door, which can still be entered by anyone, but triggers the infinite staircase if you're not Mario.

64 DS is interesting to look at when taking in the missions because aside from the repeats from the OG game, there are some that clearly have thought put into them, like the dev team knew that there were some of OG 64's missions that were kind of stinkers and replaced them with something else. But they're kind of overshadowed by how many missions they just turn Super Mario 64 into Donkey Kong 64 in constantly needing to change what character you are just to get the thing. Not to mention that the NEW new content they add in for mini levels are kinda... eh?

This game as my introduction to the game it was remade after. I had an OG DS, didn’t have the thumb strap. Also the DS has a broken button that we couldn’t ever fix. Which meant that I had to play this entire game with super super heavy use of the touchscreen controls. I hated it, but got used to it.

I think the character switching was a great idea but everything about it was handled pretty poorly Why make a room for switching instead of just letting you switch when entering a level? They let you do that with Yoshi and the caps, so why not just whole characters? The fact that Luigi and Wario take away Mario's abilities is already annoying enough, but them only being used for those abilities instead of the new ones they have (except for wario bricks) is much worse. I don't remember a single star that MAKES you use Luigi's water running or his funny spin jump. You just use them to break level design anyone could go through.

I’ve been recently obsessed again with this game and actually came up with a concept of adding Waluigi as a 5th playable character in the game, to start Waluigi’s door would be right next to Wario’s door in the character door room, to unlock him you would have to go into the basement of the castle as Wario and find Waluigi’s painting behind some of the (stupid) black bricks, you would then be transported to a piranha plant infested forest/jungle where the boss you would have to fight would be Petey Piranha, after beating him as Wario you would then get Waluigi’s key to unlock his door, Waluigi would be the fastest of the 5 playable characters and his power flower ability would be him running really fast and jumping very high, and yeah that how I would see Waluigi being playable if he was in Super Mario 64 DS!

There’s a hack that makes the game playable with 360 movement with the 3ds analog stick. It makes the DS game way better to do play and honestly, one of best ways to play 64. It doesn’t fix all the games flaws but it certainly fixes the biggest one I personally had with it
@jg272226 күн бұрын
No its not but my only complaint is that you cant save quickly before a level. Meaning you gonna lose lots of lives and eventually you have to go back outside the castle every time. This is annoying when grindng for those 10 red coins stars.

Honestly, I still need to finish my copy. I forget where I left off, but I mostly remedied the controls by holding the trigger button that centers the camera behind the character at all times.

Y'all I don't get why people say this is the inferior version when it's clearly not 😭 like some of these points are a reach at least and the whole tirade about how they changed level design for accessibility immediately followed by "I wish they changed some of these levels and not just copy them"

I grew up playing Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, I did enjoy the additional content the DS remake had, but I think I still prefer the N64 original, thinking about it now the challenges that only required certain characters does make it difficult for it's own good. Why can't all the characters use all the power ups? In the N64 original Mario was able to do that with all power ups, Donkey Kong 64 suffered from some of the same issues which is understandable. Don't you think that The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have a similar issue when it comes to comes to the Korok Seeds? There were some areas in Super Mario 64 DS that made it easy and some that made it hard, the hard part was the rabbits.

I grew up with it and was the first way I played 64 and It’s a fine remake but the og is better. 1 the controls. 2 yes the graphics are better but in some ways worse. 3 sound is worst. 4. The new missions are cool but feel like filler sometimes. 5. The new characters are awesome but it sucks that you can’t use all powerups with every character.
@robertkovarna8294Ай бұрын
Actually, only the final bowser boss requires you to be Mario. You're naturally going to the first time from him being better than Yoshi, in addition to being the only one who can throw Bowser at the time. But Bowser 3 is the only Bowser stage that forces you to be Mario.

I liked the game in theory and content but dreaded actually playing it. I did not enjoy the d-pad movement and such, so much so that it spoiled the otherwise great game for me. I'd enjoy another version of it with the extra characters and stages but with better, proper joystick controls I think.
