Everything is fusion. Ravel taking from folk music is fusion. Nothing new.

"Return to Forever" is FUSION! Corea's work with that band is legendary, as is Stanley Clarke's and Al DiMeola's! That's the RTF lineup I like the best!

RTF intoduced me to Jazz. 40 years ago. Well maybe mercy mercy mercy by Cannonball Adderl ,but RTF made me a fan of improvizational soloing Glad to hear him mention Billy. I was a fan of his early work with RTF and Stanlley Clark. This is a great series.

I know everyone loves the Mark I Rhodes for the vintage tone. But I have to say, I really love the clear-as-a-bell Mark V sound. Seems to me you could get that, and still have the amp or tone set for lower treble to get a more vintage sound as well.

CBS Fender was criticized in the '70s and long after for purported slights to a lot of things musical, some justified, others wrongfully so. The Fender Rhodes series was one of those things that they really got right. I used to sell them brand new ...

In fact, I am very thankful that Chick opted to demonstrate the Mark V for us instead of the Mark I. Having always heard the first two renditions of Rhodes piano line, I wanted to hear what the V sounded like. Of late, I’ve been musing about what I would do if I were born 20 years earlier than I was in 1980 and what kind of equipment I would get during the 80s. It’s a pretty strong likelihood I would have grabbed up a Mark V as my Rhodes model, however this is the first demonstration I have listened to of it. Is anybody aware whether not it was made with 88 notes?

3 year old comment, I’m sorry I only found it now! They made exactly one 88 key Mark V. It was the prototype, and as they were pulling the lid for the prototype out of its mould, the mould broke. Rhodes at the time was failing pretty miserably unfortunately, so the decision was made to not replace the mould and not make 88 key Mark Vs, as they had predicted based on the sales of Mark I and Mark II 88 key models that it wouldn’t be worth the time. Vintage Vibe found the one 88 key Mark V prototype, they restored it and wrote an article on their website. Head over there if you wanna hear the history, they know far better than I.

Santiago Kenguan Larry Williams was on the final Spain recording by Jarreau. Producer Jay Graydon wasn't happy with the non-studio Rhodes Chic played.

I have Concierto de Aranjuez on one of my old CDs. It never occurred to me to put the two together. And jazz was/is/forever will be an improvisational life form. Chick was genius for “fusing” Rodrigo’s Concierto Aranjuez with Spain. It doesn’t get any better than that!

I love the Rhodes, but have grown to love the Wurlitzer even more time. It captures the same warmth of the Rhodes, while removing the sharp aspects of the Rhodes timbre. It's like warm coffee.

The newer Rhodes does have a tinny metalic tone. Speaking of the mkv specifically, just think how much better it would have sounded with thicker sounding tines! I have used older tines on them and it's much better, trust me.

That Mark V Rhodes sounds wonderful to me, very bright and clear. He's piano is very dynamic and responsive, it's in a great shape and also very well tuned.

In person those tines will fatigue your ears in no time flat. The MKV is a great instrument but it would have sounded better with the older tines. Shame the mk7 sounds so tinny as well.
