The sound of the keyboard at the beginning of the video reminded me of Gino Vannelli's "Powerful People" album. He hails from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I believe you might enjoy it.

I bought a Rhodes in 1995 and then sold it to a saxophone player shortly thereafter. I regretted it after I started listening to Funk Jazz over the next few years. I looked for one for years to no avail. I finally prayed that God would let me find one! One day in 1999, I was driving from Arkansas to New Jersey and the traffic came to a sudden standstill in front of me. I decided to take a break, backed up a few hundred feet and got off the exit ramp to get fuel and eat. I stopped in a tiny music store and they had a pristine Rhodes from 1978 that still had the manual with it! I paid $500.00 for it, crammed it into my Toyota and drove away happy as the traffic was clearing up.

Amazing! I only have 1 but what a Rhodes it is - I bought it from Eric Stewart of 10cc and was used on I'm Not in Love and was played by Stevie and Macca during the Tug of War sessions. I dreamt of playing it when I was a kid so cant quite believe I have it now. But this guy's collection - my God.

I’ve had a Fender Rhodes piano in my basement for many years that belonged to my late brother who died in a fire in 1983. Amazingly it survived the fire. It also survived Hurricane Sandy when my basement flooded. I had it recovered back in tihe 90s by a musician named James “Chops” Jones. I believe it’s 88 keys. I see that some museums have these pianos and my plan is to donate it to The Newark Museum.

How did I miss this until today?! What a wonderful dive into the world of the Rhodes piano. As one doc to another, I'm someone who blew part of a student grant cheque on a second-hand Rhodes piano back in about 1984. It was a Mark 1 Stage piano, and cost me £275, I think, bought from a guy in North London somewhere. I had to spend another £75 on a sustain pedal (from Macari's in Charing Cross Road, I think). I was one happy bunny! I played the Rhodes through a Rogers valve hi-fi amp. I got a chorus pedal to play it through, and used to record my playing on a Marantz Superscope CD330 cassette recorder. Happy days! The Rhodes now lives with my son, the artist Mom Tudie, and he uses it in his music; to console myself on my loss (his gain) I now use a Yamaha YC73 for Rhodes (and other) sounds. But I miss the real thing! But it's still in action and giving pleasure, and is an ongoing blessing. Thanks to you for this wonderful dive into all things Rhodes, to Anthony for setting it up, and to Ben (and his unwitting clients!) for sharing his collection with us all. Marvellous! Best wishes to you all.

Superb video into the history of the Rhodes. As a drummer of 52 years experience I've always liked the sound of these instruments - strangely always wanted to own one yet i can't play keys for toffee! No matter what the techno keys players say, you can never replicate the Rhodes sound exactly (or the Hammond through a Leslie for that matter) - it's mechanical sound of hammers hitting tines that's just amplified.
