It was a pleasure getting to know Mak and having him explain the details of this amazing camper. I have been a fan since I first saw them, so I was very curious to get down to the details and get inside the thing. What do you think?

Always enjoy looking at other people’s build. As someone over 50, I’m looking at all options for a retirement build. Vans are in the forefront, but rigs like this are great examples of alternatives as vans have risen in price astronomically. Not saying this is cheap to build, but a Tacoma/Tundra build has greater availability and with builders like Scout and Kimbo, you can realistically put something together in a reasonable amount of time for less than a MB Van that is built out. Those guys building on MB act like they are doing you a favor getting you in for $200k. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work!

Hey dude! Awesome videos! I had a real hard time hearing your guest on this one though. Can I suggest investing in a LAV mic? DJI just made a new one that I've tried and it's actually really great. There are plenty of other options like the Sennheisier G series or the Rode Lavs. Syncing audio isn't hard anymore, most professional NLE's (editing software) have the feature. Otherwise keep up the great work!

I really like this rig, thanks for sharing. One question that I'm not sure about is why it's better to have the tire, tank, compressor in front of the camper. I know it's said to be for weight but is the camper so light that it wouldn't make more sense to move it forward instead? Especially when you look at all the weight of the stuff stored inside the camper and that the weight of water tanks and kitchen are at the rear of the camper. I understand the polar moment idea well enough but it just seems better to move the camper shell forward but I also don't know how much everything weighs.

Yeah I wonder how much difference it would make to the center of mass. Given the camper's weight is distributed over a large area, but the central items have much greater mass density, it kinda makes sense. From an offroading standpoint I would want as little as possible hanging off the back of the camper. if you look closely, it appears a portion of the camper is up against the cab of the truck w/ the cutout being for the spare.
@redracerproductions
@redracerproductions Жыл бұрын
@@taylorhickman84 but you’re moving 1000 pounds rearward to put 150 pounds in the middle, that doesn’t make sense to me especially when the heavy kitchen is at the rear of the 1000 pounds - I’m guessing at weights. I’m be no means an expert which is why I was hoping someone from Aterra would respond.
@taylorhickman84
@taylorhickman84 Жыл бұрын
@@redracerproductions I think the math is more complicated than 150 vs 1000, but not knowing how the weight is distributed(especially given the cab over portion) through the camper I can't begin to make a solid assessment. At the end of the day I think it's 6 of one, half dozen of another. As for Aterra responding, I believe the owner said it was build by a friend who is no longer making campers, but the website looks current. Perhaps the title is wrong and this wasn't built by Aterra, because I can't imagine they would abandon a a project on such a popular platform, in a market that has a 2 year waiting list for most builders.

I am stuck in limbo needing a new vehicle, had a 2022 trd pro 4runner on order for last six months, nothing yet. Kinda thinking the 4th gen tacoma with 2.4L Turbo may be the way to go with better mpg overall, yet can still tow decent.

Amazing well thought out setup! I worry about the future of being able to setup a cross country Offroad vehicle like this with impending "all electric vehicle" laws coming our way. Not to get political but I hope our next president scraps that plan of forcing us into them. I just don't see it being possible for this lifestyle with current technology.

Oops. I watched too soon. While reading the comments, I allow the commercials to run. I started this episode merely a few moments after it was posted... with only six comments to read. . And then, the first two commercials broke in at 01:26 Shucks. . [eighteen minutes later...] Five sets of two commercials each. Whew! To make it through the video plus commercials -- compensating Clodd for his work -- I may need to wait a couple-three days for more comments...

@@JimJones-gd2jy 2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard, we rarely travel more than a hundred miles a month. . Accordingly, fuel is a very minor part of our budget. While loading groceries, some scold will chastise us for our extravagance. Our response: "What mpg do you get in your apartment?"

@Chris, Max is focused and compact, a wealth of knowledge and skills. I like that in a person. . An aside: My ancient BMW motorcycle has 137,000 rough-country miles. Our longest trip was through South America. . Similar to Max, our ExpeditionVehicle is the culmination of a half-century of camping in lesser rigs.
