If you have trouble find an easy transition for the water to the fridge, you can always just use a pex stop valve. It is already 1/2 pex by 3/8 compression.

I work in HVAC install and I like how you guys ran that oven exhaust. BUT the rectangular to round fitting you're using in the wall is gonna make it hard to get a good looking drywall finish behind the oven. Personally I think it would be better to cap off the bottom of the rect duct and cut a 6 inch hole in the front face of the duct at the desired height and use a 6 inch round take off collar with dove tails to connect it. This way you could have a much lower profile connection and a better looking drywall finish around the exhaust. Just my 2 cents.

Make sure you use food grade 3/8th plastic tubing (which is generally not available in the big box stores) for your R/O water run. If you use regular plastic 3/8th tubing it will work fine, but after 9 to 12 months the water will start to taste and smell bad. The water filtration companies will sell it for sure (culligan, etc). neighbor tore apart his walls three times replacing the tubing before he found out there is different tubing.
@mattwilliamson1714Ай бұрын
Between the staples & ductwork you were saved by your kids several times in this one! 😊 Trained them up well! 👍🏼👍🏼 BTW, there are sticky drywall tape patches by Strait-Flex (& other manufacturers) that will help fix the messed up box cuts & holes around your pipes… used with hot mud they’re really quick patches. (I’m sure you’ve seen them, but they’d make good content for DIYers that haven’t.)

When I run an icemaker box from sink, I put an angle stop under the sink and an icemaker box at the fridge. If you have plenty of room at the fridge you could use a 1/4” angle stop. This is the easiest way to transition and it gives you a way to kill the icemaker under the sink instead of behind the fridge. I also have that Kline circuit breaker finder. It comes with an accessory kit that includes alligator clips. If your plug is bad you can clip to the wire. It also comes with a bulb socket and 2 prong adapter
@jamesziesenis2379Ай бұрын
Also install a burst resistant line from the pex-A stop to the refrigerator. Installing stops on both ends and I agree with you about an ice maker box.
@davidribeca1745Ай бұрын
Install the drywall over the vent and finish it! You can cut the drywall out later as you slide the duct up to its permanent location and then patch below it before the cabinet gets installed. This will save you time in the finishing process of the drywall above the cabinet where it matters!

@Stud Pack Use a PEX valve on each side of the water line for the ice maker. 1/2" PEX x 1/4" compression and a 1/2" PEX x 3/8" compression This will keep from making any weird unnecessary transitions and gives you a way to isolate the line on each side for repairs.
@rogermccaslin5963Ай бұрын
I thought I had seen pex to compression valves before but wasn't sure. They would definitely make an easier and cleaner installation than cobbing together a bunch of fittings. And, having valves at both ends makes sense.

Hey Paul, love the channel. I've been doing my own remodeling and building for my whole adult life, 54 now. And I still pick up tips and tricks from your show. But I thought that I would share a little tip with you. They make a refrigerator plumbing box that makes a beautiful transition from PEX to compression and includes a shutoff valve that recesses in the wall. Makes for a nice finished look without all of the adapters. Keep up the great content!
@johndyer1487Ай бұрын
For that PEX to the fridge, best tip I've even gotten is to plumb under the sink AND add a valve there as well as behind the fridge. That way when it eventually leaks you can easily stop the leak from the sink and buy time to figure out what the hell is going on. Pulling the fridge is always such a pain!
@denisegaylord382Ай бұрын
Hey Paul, why are we messing around with all those compression fittings behind the fridge? Ox Box makes an in the wall icemaker box, that you can connect 1/4" icemaker line directly to it, and you have a shutoff directly behind the fridge if you need it. Much cleaner and simpler installation than what you have currently configured. The boxes are just like the washing machine boxes. Just a thought. I plan on using them throughout my home when I replumb the house. A home run line direct from the manifold to each fixture's box. And I purchased the boxes with a water hammer arrestor on each fixture. Yes they were a few more dollars for the project over all, but I can see it as a major convenience later on down the road, if you need to do maintenance, or simply want to chage out a plumbing fixture.

You’re right Paul; remodels can be expensive because of all the hidden mistakes you uncover. My house was built in 1988 and has 3 levels including a basement. Last week I had a new, walk-in shower installed in the guest bathroom on the main floor. Its full length is against an outside wall. When the contractor removed the old tub/shower combo we discovered that it had been framed for a window. The contractor thought it had been removed and closed off but no brick had been patched in so I knew they had never put one in. There was nothing wrong with it; just an interesting reveal. Then there were 2 narrow, floor-to-ceiling strips between studs that were uninsulated. These WERE problems that were fixed. In the repair and remodeling work I’ve done I’ve found several issues from sloppy work. Overall it is a well-built house but has had mistakes that needed fixing. I’m sure there are more. Don’t even have room here to go into the basement and originally unfinished top floor remodels. The top floor was originally unfinished by the builder and finished by the first owner, and even though it was generally well-done I have scratched my head trying to figure out why they did some things the way they did. So after seeing this video I feel better knowing that I ain’t the Lone Ranger when it comes to finding problems during a remodel!

I built my home in 2019 and my kitchen sink is at the island and my fridge is about 10' away. I had 1/2" pex (PEX-A(Uponor) run from my sink to my fridge after outlet to get RO at the fridge LOVE IT!!!! Plumbing from RO to the PEX is easy. But for maintenance, put everything on a valve (incoming, outgoing, tank) so you can turn off the lines and pull everything out without flushing the lines empty. I do have pressure drop. I have a 4 gal tank under my sink and thinking about adding a 10 gal tank in the pantry next to fridge. So that way it will fill up with plenty of extra water and also keep the pressure good at the fridge. I mainly have problems with the ice maker on RO. Where there doesn't seem to be the normal amount of pressure so whenever it fills up the ice maker trays it does it with either two little water or too much. So every once in awhile I have a huge mess of frozen water everywhere and I have to chip out. And I'm mainly adding the 10 gallon tank versus another four, for capacity. Because my fridge, Samsung bespoke four-door French fridge, has a pitcher of water That it fills up inside the fridge for easy filling up bottles and the push dispenser inside the door, and I also have a GE nugget ice maker on the counter next to the fridge and I ran a water line to it and I took the tank off the filler and 3D printed a nice looking lid where the water line hooks up to and there's a float inside of it and so it keeps my ice maker at perfect water level at all times and it's always RO water for my nugget ice. And then same with my Nespresso coffee maker, ran a water line to it as well and it has a float that is inside the tank keeping that full with RO water. So the extra capacity would be nice to have on hand where if I'm feeling a large bottle or a couple large bottles when I get into it it takes forever to fill. I also removed the RO dispenser at the kitchen sink so it's nice and clean installation. And so the RO dispensaries are the fridge

What are the dead legs on the stub outs for the kitchen sinks? Capped pipes to serve as water hammer arrestors? If so, you might want to consider removing those since they fail and aren't serviceable once buried. Instead, you can buy water hammer arrestors that attach to your angle stops. They work far better and if they fail are easily serviceable - that's what I used.

I find it surprising how much the construction business culture varies across the country. I'm in Tucson, and I have never had a problem with getting a big sheet metal shop to do small one-offs, no matter how oddball. If I ask for something simple, like a slide damper, I can often get it while I wait for next to nothing in cost. I have also had non-HVAC items made, such as bookend like cooler baffles to separate the various brands of beer that my neighborhood sells in our bi-annual Fourth Avenue Street Fair.
