Good follow up video to Downfall of Empires! Yeah, this one is one level up on the Crunchy Scale from DoE but still looks very manageable and playable in a reasonable amount of time. The production is top notch - really like the counters and those tech tiles. Good gaming!

Yes, as you mention, it feels just a touch up on the complexity level from Empires. Very excited to see how they play. :)

Thanks for the video. Inclusion of trays goes way back to the 1970's, Avalon Hill did it with a few, SPI made the packaging into the trays with the flat packs. GMT has started putting trays in a select number of games.
@ZillaBlitz Жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks. I didn't know about Avalon Hill doing it, but I have a few of the SPI games, I should have remembered that. And I didn't know that GMT did it either. So it's definitely not the first game ever to do this. :)

I’m not aware of any Avalon Hill games that had the plastic trays.

Nice looking games! I have some old Victory Games that came with storage trays

Most of the SPI box versions came with plastic trays
@ZillaBlitz Жыл бұрын
Yes, a few people mentioned that as well, and I totally forgot about those. I actually have a half dozen or so, and did an unboxing of Patrol on the channel. :) It's probably a bit different because the box is the tray, but technically, yes, they had trays included. :)

The old SPI folio games used to come as the box bottom was counter trays with a plastic cover, on top of which were the paper map and rules. The War of the Ring was the only one I owned. That was nearly 50 years ago, my memory is to be questioned. 🤪
@ZillaBlitz Жыл бұрын
That's right! I have a bunch of those too. It's perhaps a bit different because the box is the case, but yeah, the goal is the same. Nice recollection!

A lot of the Worthington Games games over the past few years have come with a counter tray - a unique one too, designed for blocks.

Oh, nice to know, so it is definitely a thing done numerous other places, good to know. :)

Hi Zilla. Enjoyed the unboxing, although 4 hour games are a bit outside my interests at the moment. So far as trays go, there were the AH and SPI ones mentioned below, in particular I remember a WW2 SPI one where the tray WAS the box - I also recall that dropping that was a disaster. I can confirm that the Skyrim board game has a 2 layer storage solution (well, the box is almost 6" deep), I've got 2 expansions but they are almost all cards rather than counters - and there is a long card box with dividers. a la 7th Continent.
@ZillaBlitz Жыл бұрын
Yes, Boom mentioned the SPI trays that were the bottom half of the box, and I have a few of those. I think I did an unboxing on Patrol, which is that sort of a layout too. Are you liking Skyrim so far? I'm living that one vicariously through you, still very tempted to add that one to the wishlist. :)

The conflict of heroes games also have storage trays, at least awakening the bear (3rd ed.)

Thanks! One of the things that I like about The Shores of Tripoli is the design is accessible, but variations on strategy are remarkably deep. I get a sense that both of these new Downfall games might fall into that same sort of camp. Accessible, but lots of gameplay strategies to explore.

I think randomly picking technology cards makes sense, and maybe not just for solitaire. There is a bit of the "everything, everywhere, ASAP," to researching and developing things. So maybe you don't have absolute control.
@ZillaBlitz Жыл бұрын
That'd be a fun variant, for sure. Good idea. :)

I can not believe another storage tray. This is insane lol ( in a good way ). Nope. Never ever seen it. Would have loved to for sure. They were always sold separately by most companies, if they even made them. I need to look at these games. I do like the larger counters, and they're even rounded already. I don't clip anything. I just opened " Death in the Trenches " the other day, and found all the counters were rounded also. A bit heavier than " Fall of Empires ", and also my first World War I game. I just haven't seen many WWl games done. These are both interesting games, and I always swing towards games with real boards. Paper maps turn me away. Nice look at. Thanks.

@@ZillaBlitzerrata lol: Going through my games earlier, I did realize in the mid 70's SPI included trays in some of theirs games. So long ago I forgot my own games. Other than that, it's unusual.

You're doing the best unboxings in the in the biz, Mike. Rather than go through the box "blind," you prep for the video. So much more interesting.

Thanks, Mark, for the kind words. :) It's a bit of a fine line, because I don't want to judge the game before playing it, but I really want to provide as much information as possible so that it becomes more than just an overview of components. I'm glad that you find the end result enjoyable. :)
